House of the Dragon viewers gobsmacked after spotting actor from iconic 90s show

House of the Dragon includes several incredible actors but there is one in particular who has left people gobsmacked after recognising them from a number of iconic BBC shows

House of the Dragon Season Two is well underway.

Episode Four dished out a series of devastating blows to the Greens and the Blacks. In the latest instalment of HBO’s prequel to its award-winning Game of Thrones, the war between the two houses became even more fiery as three of their dragons went to battle.

However, it’s not just the characters and plot that are giving people pause as many viewers were left gobsmacked after spotting actor James Dreyfus from one of the BBC’s most iconic and beloved shows, Gimme Gimme Gimme, as well as Absolutely Fabulous.

Despite it being announced weeks ago that Dreyfus had taken on the role of Lord Gormon Massey – one of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) Council – it appears that not everyone watching recognised the star from his previous hits.

Dreyfus, 55, shot to fame for his roles in the BBC’s comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, alongside Jennifer Saunders, 66, and Joanna Lumley, 78, then as Constable Kevin Goody in Ben Elton's sitcom The Thin Blue Line. One of his most popular appearances saw him play Tom Farrell, the gay flatmate of Kathy Burke's character Linda, in Gimme Gimme Gimme. He also appeared in the Richard Curtis film Notting Hill.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to share their surprise, one viewer wrote: “I’m so made up to see @DreyfusJames on one of my favourite programmes House of Dragons. Quite impressed that my 25 year old son said ‘Is that James Dreyfus from Gimme Gimme Gimme? He’s hilarious!”

Another user questioned: “Was that James Dreyfus I saw in House of the dragon? While a third penned: “OMG! Is that the guy from Gimme Gimme Gimme in HotD? What's his name? James Dreyfus? He looks SO different?”

Based on George RR Martin’s, Fire & Blood, the Game of Thrones spin-off’s source material, House of the Dragon has captivated viewers. Its stellar cast includes Doctor Who star Matt Smith, and Golden Globe Award nominee Emma D’Arcy. The series continues on HBO in the US on Sundays and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK on Mondays.
