'Fun' sci-fi with 'spectacular visuals' set to air before MAFS UK tonight

The 2004 thriller stars Hollywood heavyweight Jake Gyllenhaal

A disaster thriller praised as 'fun' by viewers is set to air on TV tonight ahead of the latest episode of Married at First Sight UK.

The Day After Tomorrow will be shown on E4 at 6.40pm this Sunday (October 5), and promises to be quite the spectacle. The film was co-written and helmed by Roland Emmerich, the man behind Independence Day and Godzilla.

The stellar line-up continues with Hollywood A-listers Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, and Emmy Rossum heading up the ensemble cast. The storyline centres on climate scientist Jack Hall (Quaid), whose warnings to government ministers about global warming potentially sparking a fresh Ice Age fall on deaf ears, reports OK!

His forecasts prove accurate when an unforeseen tempest triggers a series of devastating natural calamities worldwide. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, Jack must journey from Washington DC to New York City to rescue his son Sam (Gyllenhaal).

The sci-fi blockbuster draws inspiration from the 1999 book The Coming Global Superstorm, written by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.

But despite boasting an all-star ensemble and timely subject matter, the disaster epic left critics unimpressed. It secured a 45 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whilst audiences granted it a marginally better 50 per cent score.

The critics' verdict states: "The Day After Tomorrow is a ludicrous popcorn thriller filled with clunky dialogue, but spectacular visuals save it from being a total disaster."

However, some film buffs thoroughly enjoyed the movie. One fan said: "This has to be one of my favourite apocalypse movies of all time.

"The story was intriguing, the visuals were amazing, and the characters were written really well. I definitely recommend it for sci-fi fans!"

Another viewer shared: "The end of the movie is a bit slower than the first half for me. Everything from the tsunamis to the tornados was great.

"One of the best Roland Emmerich disaster movies. Highly recommend a watch."

A third cinema-goer chimed in: "The movie works mainly as a fun watch and if you just watch it that way, you will totally enjoy it!"

The Day After Tomorrow airs on E4 tonight (October 5) at 6.40pm
