Netflix announces 'fantastic' period drama perfect for Bridgerton fans

The drama is based on real-life historical figures.

Netflix has just unveiled details of a brand new period drama that Bridgerton fans should be adding to their watch list.

The historical drama is based on real events and follows the lives of Sophie and Axel von Fersen - a Swedish countess and her brother.

The film stars Alva Bratt and Christian Fandango in the lead roles, and has been described as a "romantic drama".

Titled The Von Fersens, it follows the "glamorous and tumultuous" lives of the siblings who were hailed the influencers of their time.

Set in 18th-century Stockholm, filming started taking place in September this year.

The official synopsis reads: "The Von Fersens is a grand, modern, fast-paced and romantic drama film.

"Siblings Axel and Sophie grew up as the ultimate it-duo of the 18th century, the influencers of their time – but suddenly, the family is cancelled by King Gustav III.

"When their status is stripped away, they fight to protect their family's future – and discover that love might be the key to saving it."

Although an official release date is yet to be announced, fans of shows like Bridgerton are already expressing their excitement.

Taking to Reddit, SugarplumSparrow said: "I’m so excited!!! We know a lot of things about the goings on in the Swedish nobility and life at the castle.

"The princess Hedvig Eleonora Charlotta of Holstein-Gottorp was a very prolific writer and keeper of diary, and Sophie von Fersen was one of her ladies in waiting. So they got a lot of good source material to work with."

Chernaboggles added: "This looks fantastic!" While RoniaRobbersDaughter commented: "I welcome a period drama set outside the UK or France. It almost never happens so it's great news!"

Netflix Nordic shared a first-look image on Instagram, with fan elinannnnnnnn sharing: "Yes!!! Axel von Fersen has deep connections to Finland [and] French queen Marie Antoinette. Looking forward to this one."

Additional cast includes Alexander Abdallah as King Gustav III, August Wittgenstein, Alex Jubell and Sara Shirpey as well as Jonas Karlsson, Lina Englund and Carl Heine Granat who are part of the von Fersen family.
