The fire which blazed across Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon was still going by 10pm.

Firefighters first responded to reports of a fire on top of the iconic landmark at around 4pm. The blaze sent smoke rising into the sky, which could be seen for miles across the Scottish capital.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing people "running down the hill" to escape the flames. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties.

Fire still raging after 6 hours

Videos shared on X show the fire on Arthur's Seat still raging at narly 10pm. It was first reported to emergency services at around 4pm.

'All of a sudden we could see these flames...'

Nick Brice, from Brighton, told the BBC: "We could see this little plume of smoke on the ridge at the far side and it just got bigger and bigger.

"All of a sudden we could see these flames starting to come up and people noticed it spreading fast.

"The smoke started to really build and then these flames started to cover the ridge and we realised the wind was blowing it right towards us.

"We had to get down to the road fast because it was going to come across the whole area."

No casualties reported so far

No casulaties have been reported so far after a fire broke out at Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: “There are no reported casualties at this time and crews remain at the scene.”

Four fire crews still tackling blaze

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 4.05pm on Sunday, 10 August, to reports of a fire in the open at Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and specialist resources to the area where firefighters are working to extinguish a fire affecting a large area of gorse.

"There are no reported casualties at this time and crews remain at the scene."

Images taken shortly before 6pm show small patches of grass continuing to burn, with orange flames spotted from Peffermill.

EdinburghLive reports the blaze has continued to spread towards the bottom of the hill as smoke moves towards the east of the city.

Police Scotland tells people to avoid the landmark

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Emergency services are responding to a fire at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh.

"Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has also asked people to stop calling to report the fire, with crews already aware.

A spokesperson for SFRS said: “We have three appliances and specialist services in attendance.”
