Mets owner declares London has better food than New York - and fans hit back

The New York Mets traveled across the pond with the Philadelphia Phillies to contest the MLB London Series and owner Steve Cohen is clearly a fan of the city - particularly its food

Mets owner Steve Cohen has sparked a culinary controversy by claiming that London's food is superior to New York's, a statement that might not sit well with his own fans.

The Mets suffered a 7-2 defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies in the inaugural game of the 2024 MLB London Series on Saturday. The Phillies hit three home runs to secure their victory, with Whit Merrifield, Nick Castellanos, and Bryce Harper each basking in the applause at London Stadium for their performances.

Despite the loss, Cohen remained upbeat. He lavished praise on his time in London, revealing he arrived ahead of the team - and made his audacious claim about the food.

"My firm has a very large office here, so I came earlier last Sunday, did investor meetings, and hung out with my investment professionals," Cohen shared with reporters. "I've been here a week and I love London. I think the food here is fantastic - I think it's better than New York."

When quizzed about his favourite dish, Cohen said: "I was at the 10th or 11th hole at Sunningdale, and they had these sausages at the midway house - that was awesome. Little Colman's mustard, little white bread, wrap it around. Delicious."

Cohen's bold declaration naturally raised some eyebrows among fans. Twitter user @Captain2Corner responded: "Okay what are we saying now lmao."

"Steve this might be the craziest take I've ever heard," chimed in @SRSMike. Meanwhile, @FrankiesofBR tweeted: "They're more comfortable complaining about New York than actually winning."

The New York Mets baseball player's preference for London over NYC made news this week. Third baseman Brett Baty shared about a bus tour he did in London, where he visited Buckingham Palace with his girlfriend.

When reporters asked what stood out on his maiden visit to the capital, Baty candidly said: "It's a lot cleaner. I don't wanna be mean to New York City but I feel like London might be a little bit cleaner."

On the sporting front, Starling Marte, batting first, sent the Mets in the lead, forming an RBI double at his first pitch, which allowed Francisco Lindor to score. However, buoyed by Harper's jaw-dropping show and football-style knee slide, the Phillies made a roaring come back.

As they secured a 4419 victory, the Phillies earned the proud title of holding the finest record in the National League and being nine games ahead in NL East. Conversely, the Mets fall was quite heavy, shutting them to the fourth position in NL East with a 27-36 score.
