Chapter Introduction to the Domain Manager Service

The Actifio Desktop Domain Manager service is your primary tool for configuring and managing relationships among all resources within the domains protected by Actifio PAS. Use the Domain Manager to handle two broad classes of functions: The Security function is for managing Organizations and Users that have access to Actifio PAS, and the Roles that you create and assign them. These functions are detailed in Setting Up Actifio PAS Users. The System function is where you set protection rules for hosts and clusters on which copy data resides. These functions are detailed in this book.

Functions of the Domain Manager System Function

The System function of the Domain Manager provides these tools: Configuration: a powerful suite of tools for configuring and monitoring your PAS resources. This is introduced in Chapter 2, Overview of Configuration Tools and detailed in subsequent chapters. Hosts: for configuring and managing your hosts protected by Actifio PAS. Tools for host management are described in Chapter 10, About Hosts Active Images: for managing your backup images that have been mounted to hosts. If no images are mounted (active) then Active Images does not appear in the navigation pane. The Active Images tools are described in Chapter 14, Managing Active Images

Viewing the Resources Summary

The Resources Summary provides an at-a-glance view of the status of your four data storage resources.

The Domain Manager System Configuration Resources Summary When usage of any of these resources increases to and beyond the warning threshold, Actifio PAS performance can suffer. One solution is to increase your storage. Other solutions may be available depending upon the resource type. To configure resource limits and warning thresholds, you must access the specific tools: Viewing and Managing VDisk Usage on page 15 Viewing and Managing Snapshot Memory Usage on page 16 Viewing and Managing Replication Memory Usage on page 17 Viewing and Managing Mirror Memory Usage on page 18

Monitoring ResourceUsage

Viewing and Managing VDisk Usage

A VDisk is a virtual disk on a cluster, presented to a host as a unit of usable storage capacity. You use VDisks for each LUN, VMDK, database or filesystem protected (unless protected direct-to-dedup), each volume comprising a snapshot or an application, and each LUN comprising a mount or clone of an application. To monitor the number of virtual disks: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Resources. 3. Select the VDisks tab. Under VDisk Usage you see the number of VDisks in use and available. You can have a maximum of 2048 VDisks on a PAS cluster. Top 10 VDisks List The Top Ten VDisks list shows the ten VDisks that have the maximum number of virtual disk copies, usually snapshots or mounts/clones. Changing the Warning Threshold for VDisks If the number of virtual disks created on the PAS cluster exceeds the warning threshold, warnings are sent to the email recipients configured in Email on page 58. The default warning threshold for VDisks usage is 90%. To change the warning value, drag the threshold value to the desired value and click Save. Note: Do not change the warning threshold simply because your data exceeds the threshold. Change the warning threshold only if your usage requirements justify a different value. Actifio Support can help.

Viewing VDisk Usage

MonitoringResourceUsage

Viewing and Managing Snapshot Memory Usage

A snapshot is the state of a system at a particular point in time. Snapshot memory is memory pre-allocated for tracking differences between on-disk data in snapshots. To view the usage of the snapshot memory: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Resources. 3. Select the Snaps tab. Under Snapshot Memory you see the amount of memory already taken by snapshots and how much is still available. If Snapshot Memory Usage is Too High When Snapshot Memory usage increases to and beyond the warning threshold, Actifio PAS performance can suffer. Solutions include: Review your SLAs and see if you can reduce the number of snapshots you are taking. Increase snapshot memory. It can be increased up to 512MB, if you're not doing any local or remote mirroring.

Changing the Warning Threshold The default threshold for snapshot memory usage is 90%. To change the warning value, change the default warning threshold value if required. Note: Do not change the warning threshold simply because your data exceeds the threshold. Change the warning threshold only if your usage requirements justify a different value. Actifio Support can help. Changing the Resource Limit The default snapshot memory capacity is 100 MB. You can change this if you need more. Each snapshot, mount or clone uses around a kilobyte of memory per gigabyte size of a volume that is backed up or mount/clone. With 100MB snapshot memory you can have about 100TB of snapshots etc. If you are protecting many large volumes and keeping multiple generations of snapshots, increase your snapshot memory.

Viewing Snapshot Memory Usage

Monitoring ResourceUsage

Viewing and Managing Replication Memory Usage

Replication memory buffers changes that are being written to a remote cluster using Sync or Async replication. To view the usage of the replication memory: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Resources. 3. Select the Replication tab. Under Replication Memory you see the amount of memory already taken by replication and how much remains available. If Replication Memory Usage is Too High When Replication Memory usage increases to and beyond the warning threshold, Actifio PAS performance can suffer. Solutions include: See if the latency or bandwidth of your Fibre Channel network is a bottleneck. increase memory pre-allocated for replication. The sum of replication+mirror+snapshot memory can be increased to a combined maximum of 512MB

Changing the Warning Threshold The default threshold for replication memory usage is 90%. To change the warning value, change the default warning threshold value. Note: Do not change the warning threshold simply because your data exceeds the threshold. Change the warning threshold only if your usage requirements justify a different value. Actifio Support can help. Changing the Resource Limit The default replication memory capacity is 70 MB. Change this only with the assistance of Actifio Support. If required, increase or decrease the Resource Limit and click Save.

MonitoringResourceUsage

Viewing and Managing Mirror Memory Usage

When Actifio PAS is protecting an in-band volume, it has the ability to create two identical copies of that volume that it keeps in sync. This function can be used to provide high availability or to facilitate migration of the volume from one storage controller to another. Actifio PAS uses a memory bitmap to ensure that each copy of the volume is kept in sync. To view the usage of the mirror memory: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Resources. 3. Select the Mirror tab. Under Mirror Memory you see the amount of memory already taken by mirroring and how much remains available. If Mirror Memory Usage is Too High When Mirror Memory usage increases to and beyond the warning threshold, Actifio PAS performance can suffer. Solutions include: Removing volume mirrors Increase the size of the memory limit.

Changing the Warning Threshold The default threshold for mirror memory usage is 90%. To change the warning value, change the default warning threshold value. Note: Do not change the warning threshold simply because your data exceeds the threshold. Change the warning threshold only if your usage requirements justify a different value. Actifio Support can help. Changing the Resource Limit The default mirror memory capacity is 70 MB. With 100MB of mirror memory Actifio can support 200TB of mirrored volumes. Change this only with the assistance of Actifio Support. If required, increase or decrease the Resource Limit and click Save.

About Actifio PAS Storage

Actifio PAS provides three types of storage pools that serve different purposes: Snapshot storage pools are for the instant backup/restore pieces of the process. For in-band use, they ONLY contain incrementals For out-of-band use, there is one base snapshot which is the same size as the thing being protected for instance, a 100GB VM being protected will have a corresponding 100GB snap, then a series of other snaps (based on expiration policy) which may take very little space due to low change. The Snapshot pool often contains hundreds of VDisks. Snapshots are good for instant access. Primary storage pools are for in-band use, using Actifio storage to expose LUNs to exchange servers, etc. Dedup storage pools are for all applications protected by dedup in one big dedup vdisk that comes out of the dedup mdiskgrp. Dedup storage is for long-term retention. These pools are created during the PAS installation and configuration process. Allocating Storage Resources Most users put their fastest storage under the primary pool, while the dedup pool commonly gets an array that is less performance-critical but very reliable for long term storage.

ConfiguringActifioPASwiththeDomainManager 20

Conf iguringStorage

Configuring the Usage Thresholds of Storage Pools and Resource Profiles

You can configure two usage thresholds, warning and safe modes, for the three (snapshot, primary, and deduplication) types of storage pools of the PAS cluster. The Actifio PAS cluster: Issues warnings when the stored data exceeds the configured warning limit. Stops the snapshot/primary/deduplication activities and issues alerts when the stored data exceeds the configured safe limit, and all the expiration jobs still continue. If any currently running jobs are taking too much time to complete, they will be canceled automatically.

To configure the usage level: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System >Configuration > Storage Pools. 3. Select the Snapshot/Primary/Dedup tab. 4. The default value is 80% for the snapshot and primary storage pools and 70% for the deduplication pool. When this level is exceeded, PAS system generates warnings. Do not change the default settings unless advised by Actifio Support. 5. Set Safe Mode to an appropriate level of usage. The default value is 90% for the snapshot and primary storage pools and 75% for the dedup pool. When this level is exceeded, the PAS system stops writing to storage. Do not change the default settings unless advised by Actifio Support.

Chapter Managing Dedup Garbage Collection

The garbage collection process examines the storage space in the PAS cluster and eliminates expired objects. This makes the unused space available for future allocations. Garbage collection has two phases: Marking finds and creates a list of all objects that are no longer required. Sweeping updates the references to the objects that will be compacted.

Garbage collection is done automatically, but some settings need to be configured. This section contains: Configuring Full GC Schedule on page 26 Configuring an Incremental GC Schedule on page 28

Sweep Phase The sweep phase examines the marked objects, and frees storage space that has become unused. If no sweep schedule is enabled, then sweep runs after every GC phase. Schedule sweep separately if you want to have a sweep run for several hours every night (for example) until it is complete. To configure the sweep phase settings: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Dedup Settings from the navigation pane. The GC configuration page opens. 3. Click the Enable button in SWEEP PHASE:

4. Select the frequency of garbage collection from Frequency. You can set this value to daily, weekly or monthly. The required inputs may vary based on the frequency. 5. Select the interval values to perform the garbage collection using the When? and Day? fields. 6. Enter the time to perform the GC from Time. 7. Define how long the schedule should run. You can set this value to until complete or specified hours using the drop-down. 8. Set the sweep threshold variable under GC CONFIGURATION. This variable determines how aggressive the sweep process will be in reclaiming space from expired backups. A setting of 100 reclaims all the possible space, but takes longer to run. A lower setting will reclaim less space, but it will reclaim it at a faster rate. The default value of this variable is 90. 9. Click Save to update the changes. Note: You can use the Delete button to remove an existing sweep schedule.

Configuring an Incremental GC Schedule

Incremental GC is a quick GC that only frees up storage space that has been consumed and subsequently dereferenced since the last full GC. If you have a high rate of backup and expiration of recent backups, or if you are running dedup async, it is very likely that you need incremental GC to prevent the dedup store growing too fast between full GC. Note: The Incremental GC schedule runs only when at least one dedup-async is configured. The incremental GC schedule is configured in regular intervals to define the GC frequency, interval and the time to perform etc. It is managed in two phases: GC Phase In this phase, all the reachable objects are identified and marked. To configure the GC phase settings: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Dedup Settings from the navigation pane. The GC configuration page opens:

3. Click the Enable button. 4. Click on Incremental GC tab. 5. Select the frequency of garbage collection from Frequency. You can set this value to daily, weekly or monthly. 6. If you select Weekly or Monthly frequency, select the interval values to perform the garbage collection using the When? and Day? fields. 7. Chapter Cluster Topology

Clusters are the Actifio PAS side of the data-protection picture, as Hosts are on your side of the picture. Each PAS Cluster can stand alone to deduplicate and store protected data, and you can add additional clusters for disaster recovery and business continuity purposes at the same site or at different sites. A PAS cluster is a management entity, comprising PAS nodes, storage, switches, batteries, and a controller. The amount of storage varies with the cluster model that you install. the rest of the components are virtually the same for all types of clusters. The cluster is a domain name space, and the single point of provisioning. You interact with the cluster through the Actifio Desktop or the CLI, and the cluster performs all PAS operations using its own nodes, switches, and storage.

Storage

Applications are data resources on your hosts. Actifio PAS discovers the applications, and then images them, deduplicates the application data, and stores it, all on the cluster. Actifio PAS 5.1 can support any number of clusters at any number of sites. Clusters can be configured in sharing or non-sharing mode. First read about Cluster Topology: Sharing and Peer Relationships on page 32. Then read About Sharing Mode on page 33 and About Non-Sharing Mode on page 34.

Cluster Topology: Sharing and Peer Relationships

You can join PAS clusters in two modes: Sharing mode: Use this mode when you want multiple clusters to share: Protected applications Security settings: Organizations, Users, and Roles Policy Templates and Resource Profiles Non-sharing mode: Use this mode when you want clusters to perform remote backups for each other.

You can use both types of relationships within your enterprise. For example, you might use three joined sharing-mode clusters for day-to-day data protection, and a fourth non-shared cluster for off-site disaster recovery.

Cluster B (shared)

Cluster D (not shared)

Cluster C (shared)

Clusters A, B, and C are Shared for Daily Operations; Remote Cluster D is for Disaster Recovery Sharing mode is described in About Sharing Mode on page 33. The procedures for joining clusters in sharing mode can be found at Joining a Cluster to a Master Cluster on page 41. Non-sharing mode is described in About Non-Sharing Mode on page 34. The procedures for joining clusters in sharing mode are in Joining PAS Clusters in Non-Sharing Mode on page 42

About Sharing Mode

About Joining Clusters in the Sharing Mode When cluster B joins cluster A, the latter becomes the master and B, the slave. There can be only one master cluster in a PAS domain. There can be any number of slaves. Masters are made, not born. The act of joining in shared mode creates the master-slave relationship. Sharing mode makes a slave of the cluster that joins. In the diagram above, cluster B joined cluster A in sharing mode. At that moment, cluster B became the slave and cluster A became the master. The slave joins the master. A master cluster, which is already in sharing mode (thats why its a master) cannot join any other cluster, because it would become a slave; once the master, always the master. All slave clusters are peers to each other. A cluster can join any cluster in non-sharing mode. Non-shared clusters are peers to all clusters. A cluster cannot join a slave cluster. In the diagram above, cluster D cannot join cluster C or cluster B. Cluster D can join cluster A in the sharing or non-sharing mode.

Master Cluster A

Cluster B (shared)

Cluster D (not shared)

Cluster C (shared)

Master Cluster A Shares Rules with Slave Clusters B & C, but Not Remote Cluster D When Cluster B is joined to Cluster A: If Cluster B has no protected applications, and no users, roles, organizations, and policy templates defined, then Cluster B gets users, roles, organizations, and policy templates shared from A, but no applications. If Cluster B has users, roles, policy templates, and organizations defined, they are deleted and replaced by those shared from A. If Cluster B has protected applications, they are preserved, but they are protected by the policy templates shared from A. If Cluster A and B both do not contain protected applications, users, roles, policy templates, and organizations, then when B is joined to A, no obvious changes occur. However, once you create users, roles, organizations, and policy templates on A, they are shared with cluster B.

About Non-Sharing Mode

Two clusters belonging to different PAS domains can connect in non-sharing mode. You can join: One cluster with another cluster to enable replication from the former to the later. One cluster with two clusters to enable different applications to replicate to separate clusters. Two clusters with one cluster to let the later act as a target for replication.

Non-sharing mode makes peers of the clusters that are joined. When two clusters join in the non-sharing mode, each cluster can be the destination for remote replication of data from the other cluster. In the non-sharing mode, each cluster uses its own users, policies, templates, and organizations and protects only the applications assigned to it; peer clusters do not share users, policies, templates, and organizations.

The Master Cluster Shares Users and Policy Templates with Slave Clusters The types of replications supported by PAS cluster are given below. All of them can use the cluster setup described above. Synchronous replication from the primary cluster to a remote cluster. Asynchronous replication from the primary cluster to a remote cluster. Asynchronous replication of deduped data from the primary cluster to a remote cluster. Remote deduplication replication from the dedup pool of the primary cluster to a remote cluster.

Scheduling Bandwidth Throttling

During some parts of the day or week, you may need Actifio PAS cluster to use less of your bandwidth so that other priority services can use it. You can customize the backup throttle so that it runs automatically based on the pre- defined schedules (triggers). Throttling determines the amount of bandwidth you want to dedicate to PAS cluster for your data replication. This section describes how to create, activate and delete bandwidth triggers.Triggers are part of the scheduling framework. Each trigger allows you to specify the amount of bandwidth that you want to allocate, interval and time of the trigger. You can create separate triggers for weekdays and weekends to use them accordingly based on your needs. Note: You can create a maximum of 10 different triggers. To create a bandwidth trigger: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. Click System > Configuration > Cluster Settings. The Cluster Manager page allows you to override throttling. 3. In the Cluster Manager, click the Dedup subtab.

4. Enable throttling by clicking the On button next to Throttling. 5. Select No to override triggers. 6. Click Add new trigger button as showed in the above figure. 7. Considerations when PAS is Configured with LDAP

When PAS clusters are configured with LDAP to authenticate users: LDAP users who need to access PAS Clusters need to be created in the PAS Clusters by administrators These new users can have their passwords left blank. User accounts with empty passwords will be "locked" until the user logs in with LDAP once to set their cached credential. Login process is transparent to users; username and password will be same as their LDAP/Active Directory server username and password. Users receive no feedback on the reason for a failed login attempt. The reason is logged for administrative use but for security purposes the user is only informed that their login failed. Users receive no information about which authentication method is in use. User credentials are sent to LDAP servers with 256 byte encryption for authentication. User credentials are encrypted and cached in the PAS cluster database. In the event that PAS cluster is not able to reach LDAP servers due to various reasons AND if the cluster is configured to use database fallback (not selected by default), then users will be authenticated against cached encrypted credentials stored in the PAS Cluster database. Cached credentials are refreshed upon establishing connection with configured LDAP servers. The default "Admin" account will always be authenticated against internal credentials stored in the PAS database. When PAS Clusters are in Sharing Mode, the PAS cluster that's configured to authenticate against LDAP will propagate only username to shared clusters. User credentials will not be propagated to shared clusters. LDAP configuration is not shared between PAS clusters. Each cluster must be configured to the LDAP individually.

Hosts are your data resources that will be protected by Actifio PAS. Hosts can be physical or virtual servers, Oracle databases, etc. Hosts are introduced in About Hosts on page 66 and .In-Band and Out-of-Band Storage on page 67. The first step in protecting a host is to add it into the Actifio PAS system, and then follow the discovery process to identify different data applications. After the host has been added and the application identified, you can protect each application in a way that suits it best. Managing hosts is detailed in Chapter 11, Managing Hosts Adding hosts is detailed in Chapter 12, Adding Hosts You also need to understand VDisks. In-Band and Out-of-Band Storage

Hosts can be protected in-band or out-of-band with relation to Actifio PAS clusters. Whether the data to be protected is in-band or out-of-band makes a difference to your protection and recovery options. In-Band Actifio PAS Service In-Band PAS is fast. With in-band service, Actifio PAS protects your applications on the PAS cluster primary storage. In-Band service is typically handled over fibre-channel connections inside your data centers. Out-of-Band Actifio PAS Service Out-of-Band service offers flexibility and economy. Applications protected by Actifio PAS on external storage is Out-of-Band (OOB). PAS manages the storage as MDisks (managed disks) and maps them to PAS VDisks. Actifio PAS refers to both remote storage and your existing local non-Actifio storage as external storage. External storage is often accessed over iSCSI connections. Hosts that have any applications protected out-ofband have a Ports and a Storage tab in addition to the Details, Applications, and Orgs tabs.

Chapter Adding Hosts

12

Hosts are your data resources that will be protected by Actifio PAS. The first step in protecting them is to add them into the Actifio PAS system. Host management includes adding a host to Actifio Desktop and specifying its ports (WWPN/iSCSI) and virtual disks: Adding a Host on page 76 Configuring the Ports of a Host on page 79

ConfiguringActifioPASwiththeDomainManager 75

Add ingHosts

Adding a Host
You can add a host and define or discover the applications running on the host to protect their data. On hosts that run the Actifio Connector, Actifio Desktop discovers the applications to protect. However, on hosts that do not run the Connector, you can define the applications to protect. Actifio PAS supports multiple hosts with same Hostname. To add a new host: 1. Open the Domain Manager. 2. From the service menu, select New Host....

3. The Add a New Host form appears:

Enter the name, fully qualified domain name, or the IP address of the host in Hostname. The name of a host should start with a letter, and can contain letters, digits (0-9), and an underscore ('_'). 4. Enter the friendly name for the Host. 5. Click Discover Details. Actifio Desktop lists all IP addresses used by the host. 6. Select the type of host in Type of Host. The table below explains how to choose a host type:
Host Type Generic Select when: Configuring ESX\ESXi hosts, Microsoft Exchange Servers, Microsoft SharePoint Servers, Microsoft SQL Servers, and Linux and Windows file systems. This is the default host type. Important: Actifio Desktop and the command line interface do not allow creation of mapped disks to protect ESX/ ESXi hosts. If your deployment requires Mdisk allocation to an ESX/ESXi host, define the host type as 'generic'. The host is running HP-UX operating system and the host is in an IP network. The host connects through multiple target ports and is running Solaris 10 and above. Adding a vcenter, or ESX\ESXi hosts managed by a vCenter. \

Chapter Creating and Configuring VDisks

VDisks are virtual disks, a common way to manage storage. VDisk management includes: Creating a VDisk on page 82 Mapping and Unmapping a Virtual Disk to a Host on page 86 Expanding a Virtual Disk on page 87 Renaming a Virtual Disk on page 88 Deleting a Virtual Disk on page 89

13

You can use the Create VDisk functionality to create different types of virtual disks and assign them to hosts. Virtual Disks are visible to the host systems that use them.

Virtual Disk Types VDisks are created from a set of extents in an MDisk group. VDisks that can be created as: Image Mode: An image mode VDisk provides a direct block-for-block translation from the managed disk (MDisk) to the VDisk with no virtualization. Image mode VDisks have a direct relationship with one MDisk. When you create an image mode VDisk, a direct mapping is made between extents that are on the MDisk and extents that are on the VDisk. Use this mode when you require a direct block-for-block translation from the managed disk (MDisk) to the VDisk. Mirror Mode: Mirroring adds a second identical disk to back up the first image. A mirrored virtual disk can remain operational if one VDisk fails or corrupted. The first disk is always an image disk, as described above. The second disk might be another image, or it could be a striped disk: Mirror Mode: Image-Image: In image-image mode, the secondary disk is of image type. Mirror Mode: Image-Striped: In image-striped mode, the secondary disk is of striped type. A striped virtual disk is one in which the data is broken into chunks and distributed on the disks comprising the MDisk group in which the virtual disk is created. Striped mode indicates that the VDisk is created from multiple MDisks in the MDisk group.

Clicking the next button breaks the mirroring operations. Make sure to extend the Image Mode MDisk before proceeding. 6. Click Next. The Wizard displays the old and new size of the Image Mode MDisk . 7. Review and confirm the MDisk expansion results. This new size is the reflection of changes made to the storage array manually. Use the Refresh function if the new size value is not reflected. Note: If required, you can change the sync-rate by using the Select Syncrate drop-down. Sync rate specifies the rate for synchronization for mirrored copies. The default sync-rate is 64 MB per second. The following table shows the relationship between the rate value and the data copied per second. 8. Click Next. The Wizard displays the available MDisks to add it to the striped set. The Striped Mode MDisk expansion is done in this wizard by selecting the appropriate MDisks. Select the MDisk(s) and click the Use Selected MDisk(s) button to proceed with re-establishing the mirror. This wizard gives you additional MDisk storage that is required to be added on Striped Mode MDisk for establishing the mirror. The same screen displays the % of mirroring progress as shown below:
