Chapter 1 Introduction
Introduction
Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. It has always occupied place in
most English language course. Meyers (2005:2) say that writing is a way to product language,
which you do naturally when you speak. Writing is communication with other in a verbal
way. Writing is also an action a process of discovering and organizing your idea, putting them
on paper and reshaping and revising them, (2005:2). Writing skills is a basic skill for students
in primary level. This is important for them to achieve a better future. This research is to
determine the problem of writing in English language subject among the students in SJKC
Khoi Ming , Kota Marudu which situated in the rural area. Writing skill is an intellect norm
which is exists with reading and writing. The ability to write is a skill which is important in
the lesson process in any discipline in school. The achievement in writing skill will increase
the ability of learning in English and other subjects. This union of skills, however, is a very
complex process, and there are few for whom these skills evolve easily. When mastery of
these skills becomes an overwhelming obstacle for children, they are often diagnosed with a
learning disability in written expression. Sometimes this is due to a lack of skills in a certain
area, which can be due to the way the brain translates language. Often, but not always, a child
with a disability in written expression will have similar difficulties with reading and/or oral
language.
This disability looks different in every child, but the student will commonly have difficulty
with spelling, punctuation, capitalization and learning basic grammar rules early on. As the
child moves through the elementary school years and the demands placed on the student
become more complex, different difficulties such as planning, organization, editing, and
revising will often become apparent.
Learning to write is a linear process, and the tackling of new skill depends upon mastering
the skills that came before it. Early struggles with basic skills become magnified and more
problematic as academic tasks become more challenging. Writing becomes a chore for these
children, and they will often try to avoid it at all costs. However, there are several things that
teachers can do to support the learning of the writing skills that will help their students
believe that they, too, can be writing experts!
TO INCREASE WRITING SKILLS USING CAPITAL LETTER FOR YEAR FIVE
STUDENTS IN THE BEGINNING OF SENTENCE AND PROPER NOUNS
Introduction
Writing skills is a basic skill for students in primary level. This is important
for them to achieve a better future. This research is to determine the
problem of writing in English language subject among the students in the
rural area of Kota Marudu.
Writing skill is an intellect norm which is exists with reading and writing.
The ability to write is a skill which is important in the lesson process in any
discipline in school. The achievement in reading and writing skill will
increase the ability of learning in English and other subjects. (Abdul Rasid
Jamian). Abdul Rasid dan Zulkifli (2008), the problem in reading and
writing makes the students to be more underachiever and lose of interest
in English due to the disability to overcome them. Levin (1987), the way of
holding writing apparatus such as pencil or pen will determine the
handwriting produce by the student. Poor in motoric unable the children to
hold properly pencils or even button their shirts and organizing pebbles.
They are unable to control the nerve of holding things and it is hard for
them to stabilize the movement of the pencil.
Children with dyspraxia show difficulty in coordinate their motoric. This
difficulty unable them to hold pencil properly. Instead of using fingers,
they move their wrist or hand while writing. Sasson ( 1930), teacher were
less into in how to write especially teaching students to hold properly the
pen or pencil, writing capital letter in proper way, determine the right size
of letter and the space between letters and phrases. Children should be
exposed in the right writing in the early stage to encourage them to
create their own handwriting, nicely and tidily. Brenna (1995) children are
able to manipulate knowledge to solve problem. For example if they are
facing up-side alphabet which they might answered the letter b or p.
Other than that, children might confuse with the mirror image. For
example between the letter b and d or the letter p and q. ( Huggins
al.1996) An analyze by Pop ( 1964 ) shows that children in kindergarten
having problem to match small characters such as the letters u, q, d, h, p,
v, b, c, f, l, j, and k. Pops research also showed that kindergarten kids are
having problem with the letters b - d, p - q, and d - p. This called reverse
character.
Based on the researchers above, I surely having the same
problem in my class. My students using capital letters in the wrong place.
Even though I keep on remind my students but they still doing the same
mistake over and over. They cannot differentiate between proper noun
and noun in the sentences. Because of that, education nowadays focuses
on enhancing skill. One of inessential skill that should be enhanced by
students is the ability to use capital letters correctly. If the students
unable to do so will jepordise the quality of their writing especially in
formal examination such as Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).
Pernyataan Masalah
The disability to learn still in English in first level will bring a negative
impact on the second level. The observation shows that many of students
in level two still show difficulty in some skills that suppose have been
mastered in the level one. For example, their skill of using capital letters in
making sentences. Many students made variety of mistake using capital
letter in the wrong place. Students may also used capital letters instead of
small letter in some words. The skill of using capital letters seems to be a
tip of the iceberg. This makes students neglected this matter in their
writing. Due to that problem, researchers are force to detect the reasons
that causing these students neglected this skill. Hoping the teachers could
enhance their way of conducting lesson to compromise this problem.
Based on the observation, there are two phenomena that causing this
problem. One, students only used this skill during the lesson session.
Students keep doing these multiple mistakes and realize when they are
reprimand by the teacher. Two, students could not differentiate between
proper nouns and common nouns.
Background Research
Year of experience in teaching taught me many valuable things. From
simple syllabus to a complicated syllabus, even smart students whether in
test or examination still students tent to make mistakes in using capital
letter and punctuation. The favorite question from the teachers is asking
students to write some sentences using proper punctuations will cause
students to lose their marks and actually contribute lower grades. I took
one of the problems to enhance the ability of using capital letters and
punctuation. If students build a sentence without using capital letter at
least at the beginning of phrases especially in writing.
Even though, I always remind the students to use capital letter of the
beginning of the sentences and proper nouns, the students tend to do the
same mistake. So I am doing this research to solve this problem.

To enhance the students ability using capital letters at the beginning
of sentence and right spelling for proper nouns.

How to use colour pencils will help me to illuminate the confusion
using capital letter in writing?
Definition
Pre Test
Pre test is used to get a clear description the level of students skill using
capital letter in English writing in Paper 2.
Post Test
Post test is used to know the students achievement towards the problem
in the during the research and after guidance given by teachers.
Research Limitation
During teaching English, I found that it is obvious among the students of 5
Ren, they could not write a complete sentence using capital letters and
punctuation in a proper order especially in comprehension, rewrite a
sentence and so on. I also teach English in Standard 4, and this helps me
to detect their achievement, this kind of situation should not be left
behind, because to use capital letters and punctuation are important in
every writing. If this problem continued, the percentage in English subject
might be decrease for 5 Ren. Based on syllabus of standard 5, every
weekly plan consist writing skill which is concentrate on punctuation.
The Important of Research
This research consist of several vital information with is handy for
teachers. Teachers play the role of researchers which studies the system
of teaching and learning in the class. The impetration of this action
research in the class is:
