Classroom Performance System Roster Import
Using the CPS software, you can import your class rosters, making it easy to assign the student
response devices to specific students. To do this you will need to have a .csv file of your roster.
For this tutorial you will import the Hollywood Stars .csv file from the desktop. For use in your
own classroom, please ask the Infinite Campus coordinator at your school to create a .csv file of
each class roster and email them to you.
Directions:
Follow these directions to import the .csv file of your roster:
1. Open the CPS program
2. Click on the PREPARE tab.
3. Select IMPORT and click on COMMA SEPARATED VALUE (.csv) as the import source and
click NEXT.
4. Select the Hollywood Stars file and click OPEN.
Practice:
Follow the directions above to import the roster. After step 4, your screen should look like the
example below:

Classroom Performance System Answer Key Generation
Now you will generate an answer key in CPS using the assessment at the end of this tutorial. There are several types of
answers available for each question, so make sure you select the correct type. It is also important to check the current
question number often to ensure the question matches the answer. Follow the directions below to create the answer
key.
Directions:
1. While still in the PREPARE section of CPS, select LESSONS AND ASSESSMENTS, and select NEW FASTGRADE
LESSON.
2. Give the answer document a name and description that matches your assessment. The FastGrade answer
window will now appear.
3. From the FastGrade answer entry window, make sure you select the type of answer for each question.
If you have a multiple choice question with four possible answers, select MC4. The program will
automatically advance to the next question.
If you have a true/false or yes/no question, select the appropriate response. The program will
automatically advance to the next question.
If you have a numeric answer, type the answer in the Numeric field and click ADD. The program will
not advance to the next question unless you click ADD.
If you have a short answer, type the answer in the Short Answer field and click ADD. The program
will not advance to the next question unless you click ADD.
4. After you have submitted all your answers, click on the OKAY button in the FastGrade answer entry window.
Practice:
Follow the directions above to create your answer key. Your screen should look like the example below:

Classroom Performance System Mode Selection
There are two modes available for the assessment. If you want your students to answer questions at
their own pace, you should select STUDENT PACED MODE. If you want to control the pace and only
allow students to advance to the next question when you are ready, select TEACHER LED MODE.
Directions:
1. Select the Engage Tab and then the Lessons & Assessments sub-tab
2. Place a check in the box beside the assessment you want to engage
3. In the Assessment Setup, select student paced mode if you want the student to set the pace,
teacher led if you want to set the pace.

Classroom Performance System Power on Device
After you have imported the class rosters, generated your answer key, and selected the
assessment type, it is time to prepare the student response devices for use. One important
thing to remember is that the CPS Device Receiver must be inserted into a USB port on your
computer in order for the devices to function. Follow the directions below to power on the
device and use them to submit answers to an assessment.
Directions:
1. Plug the CPS Device Receiver into a USB port on your computer.
2. Power on the CPS device.
Practice:
Practice powering on the device by pressing the power button as illustrated in the example
below. Practice pressing the buttons to better understand how to select your answer.
Example:
The power button is centered at the bottom of the device, as illustrated below.
Feedback:
If the LCD display does not light up, try powering the device on again. If it still doesnt come on,
check to see if you need new batteries.
Classroom Performance System Engage Assessment
Engaging the assessment is the culmination of the planning and assessment implementation process.
This is where you will allow students to begin the assessment and watch their answers appear on the
screen as they enter them. You can get an idea of how well the students are performing as the screen
lights up either red or green. Follow the directions below to engage the assessment.
Directions:
1. While still in the ENGAGE tab, select the ENGAGE ASSESSMENT button.
2. When you engage the lesson, the Instructor Feedback window will appear. You do not want
your students to see this screen, so if your projector is on, make sure you turn it off now.
3. Click on the Start button in the CPS program when you are ready to begin the assessment.
Practice:
Watch your screen as you enter answers into the CPS device. Correct answers will be highlighted in
green and incorrect answers will be in red. If you enter an answer that is outside the selection realm,
you will see an Invalid message for that question. The example below shows how your computer
screen may look as you enter answers in the device.
Example:
Feedback:
If your screen does not show green and/or red cells as you type answers into the CPS device, the
assessment is not working properly. Press the END button at the bottom of the window and begin with
step 1 of this Engage Assessment activity again.
Assessment:
Directions: Place the following steps in the order that they must be performed:
____ Go to assessment setup
____ Click on engage
____ Select assessment
____ Select student paced or teacher led assessment
Classroom Performance System Report Production
One of the advantages of using the Classroom Performance System for your assessments is the
ability to view reports based on the students performance. Although there are many to choose
from, the two that you should explore in this tutorial are the Instructor Summary Report and
the Item Analysis Report. The instructor report will show you the percentage of correctly
answered questions, while the item analysis report will show you the percentage of students
who selected each answer. These reports are beneficial in helping you decide which units of
instruction may need redelivery.
Directions:
1. To run a report in CPS, select the REPORT tab.
2. Highlight the assessment you would like a report for by clicking on it.
3. Click the GENERATE REPORT button and a reporting window will appear.
4. Select specific students in the left window pane to generate a report for, or select the
entire class.
5. Select the Instructor Summary Report.
6. Select the Item Analysis Report.
7.
Practice:
Follow the directions above to create an Instructor Summary Report and Item Analysis Report.
Examples of those reports appear below.
Example:

If your reports do not provide you with the information you are seeking, go back to step 1 of
this Report Production activity and start over.
Classroom Performance System Tutorial Conclusion
You have now learned how to use the Classroom Performance System software and Student
Device Responses to engage your class assessments.
There are many other ways that you can use the student response devices including learning
games, gauging effectiveness of lessons, determining what topics need reteaching, testing
retention of knowledge from lectures, and much more.
