IELTS Writing Task 2 (Essay): Minimum 250 words (No upper limit), Task 2 and Task 1 score 2:1,

Time: 40 minutes
Marking criteria
Task Response
Pay attention to all issues in the essay question, Write about the issues rather than just the general topic, Answer
the essay question with relevant main points, Plan your supporting points so they dont go off the topic, Write
over 250 words

Coherence and cohesion (Organisation of essay, the paragraphs and use of linking devices assessed)
Write 4-5 paragraphs (Not more or not less) Means 2-3 body paragraphs, Just one central topic in each body
paragraph, Organize your ideas logically, Use o range of linking words (avoid errors)

Lexical Resources (Use of vocabulary, paraphrasing, spelling and number of mistakes assessed)
Vocabulary band score
Pay attention to collocation (Which verb matches which noun), Paraphrase carefully to avoid errors, Use a range
of words appropriate for the topic, Spell words correctly, Avoid making errors, Avoid using informal languages,
Grammatical range and accuracy

Grammar band score


Use different grammar tenses (Conditionals, perfect tenses, passive voice, past, future etc.), Pay attention to
word order in sentences, Use a range of sentence structures, Use the correct Punctuation, Avoid common errors
in grammar (Articles, plural nouns, uncountable nouns, word order)

Scoring:
Task Response (9) + Coherence and Cohesion (9) + Lexical Resource (Vocabulary) (9) + Grammatical Range and
Accuracy (9) Divided by 4= Actual Score

Task 1 = transfer of information from a visual into writing, Task 2 = answer an open/abstract question with no
clear or correct answer
Essay planning 4-5 minutes, Writing 25 32 minutes, Editing 5 minutes (or more if possible)

Academic/formal writing
Organize ideas in separate paragraph, Write in complete sentence, Avoid repetition of words and ideas,
Thoughtful and neutral tone

Not Academic: I hate this idea! (Too excited/angry)


Academic: This idea has some problems to consider.
Not Academic: Everyone is distracted by cell phones these days.(too broad)
Academic: Many people distracted by cell phones these days.
Not academic: I have the best solution to the problem. (too certain)
Academic: I would suggest this solution to the problem.

Types of essay: Opinion Essays, Discussion Essays, Advantage/Disadvantage Essays, Solution Essays and Direct
Question Essay

Tips: Read instructions very carefully, Write 4-5 paragraphs that simply means 2-3 body paragraphs, Dont write
the essay title (Waste of time), Spelling and Punctuation is very important (Don't expect 6.0 with these types of
errors), Can use both pen and pencil, raise your hand for extra writing paper, Strongly recommended to choose
Task 1 first to do, Planning is a must. Allocate 4-5 minutes of time for planning, Conclusion is a must, Give your
opinion if the instructions ask for your opinion
