4 - Literary Translator

Literary translation involves translating works of fiction, drama, and poetry between languages. Literary translators work to convey the original author's message and sentiments to a new audience. While most literary translators work freelance, it is a very competitive field with few steady jobs. To find work, literary translators must build experience through samples on a website, work with translation agencies, join professional associations, and regularly check job boards for opportunities in their language pairs.

TRADUCTORADO TÉCNICO-CIENTÍFICO Y LITERARIO DE INGLÉS

LITERARY TRANSLATION I

Literary Translator
“Job description and activities”

Literary translation is one of the major specialist categories of translation. Literary translators translate
both classical and contemporary works in any of the three main genres:
 fiction;
 drama;
 poetry.
They are also employed by the film industry to dub or subtitle films intended for foreign audiences.
A literary translator's main task is to provide the most accurate translation of the original work. This
calls not so much for a word-for-word translation of the source text, as for an attempt to convey the
author's original message and to evoke the original flavour and sentiments of the story for a foreign
readership and audience. In the case of contemporary literary works, the translator usually works
closely with the author. The majority of literary translators work freelance.
In common with all translators, literary translators are required to have a very good knowledge of two
or more languages and cultures. They are also expected to be experts in literature, have a flair for
creative writing and be aware of existing translations of the text they are working on. A literary
translator may become a member of the Translators Association of the Society of Authors .

How to Find Literary Translation Jobs

It is undoubtedly the most difficult in which to find steady, well-paid work. Only about three percent of
all literary works published in the United States each year are translations of foreign books. That means
that there are effectively more qualified literary translators than there are works to translate. Most
translators with a love of literature find themselves having to do other types of translation work in
between literary translation gigs. This is not to discourage you from pursuing literary translation work.
Rather, it is only meant to paint a realistic portrait of the current employment climate for literary
translators.

Things you'll need:

1. Build a website. On it, include samples of your literary translation work.
2. Find a translation agency that specializes in literary translation. Send these
agencies a copy of your résumé, several samples of your work and your website
address.
3. Register with the American Translators Association. This will show potential
publishers that you are professionally qualified to do the job.
4. Search for specific jobs on translation specialty websites. A listing of
recommended translator job boards appears in the Resources section below.
Most of them have listings especially for literary translation jobs, and you can
narrow your search by language pairs.
