FAMILIARIZATION WITH
LT SWITCHGEAR
INTRODUCTION
The apparatus used for switching, controlling and protecting the electrical
circuits and equipments is known as switchgear.
TYPES OF SWITCHGEAR
Depending upon-
Current rating
Voltage rating(low,medium,high)
Construction type(indoor,outdoor,industrial etc.)
Interrupting device(fuse,air breaker,oil breker etc.)
Application(transmission,distribution)
ELEMENTS OF LOW VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR
Busbars
Fuse
Circuit breaker
Relay
Current transformer
Potential transformer
.
Busbars
A busbar is a metallic strip or bar,
typically housed inside switchgear,
panel boards for local high current
power distribution.
Theelectrical busbar is available in
rectangular, crossectional, round
and many other shape.
Copper and aluminium are used
for the manufacturing of electrical
busbar.
Devices Used For Circuit Breaking (Or Making)
1. Fuse and iron clad switches
2. Isolators
3. Circuit breakers
Fuse and Iron Clad Switches
Fuse is an overcurrent switch in the sense that when the current exceeds a pre-
assigned value in a circuit or device, it melts and causes current interruption.
The supply is restored only when a healthy one replaces the damaged (melted)
fuse in the line.
To permit the restoration by changing the fuse wire without any danger of shock
to the operator, fuses are connected on the load side of an ironclad switch.
Isolators:
An isolator is a switch connected after a circuit breaker.
When a circuit or a bus bar is taken out of service by tripping the circuit breaker,
the isolator is open circuited and the isolated line is earthed through earth switch
so that the trapped line charges conducted to ground.

Kitkat fuse (Rewireable Fuses)
This kind of fuse is most commonly used
in the case of domestic wiring and small
scale usage.
The main composition is of a porcelain
base which holds the wires.
The fuse element is located inside a
carrier that is also made out of
porcelain.
It is possible to remove the fuse carrier
without any risk of electrical shock.
When the fuse blows, it can be replaced
without having to change the complete
set.
The main metals or alloys used in
making fuse wire include lead, tinned
copper, aluminum or tin lead alloy.

Glass cartridge fuse
Glass fuses have the advantage of a fuse
element visible for inspection purposes
They have a low breaking capacity
(interrupting rating), which generally
restricts them to applications of 15 A or less
at 250 VAC
Plastic fuse holders

Miniature Circuit Breaker(MCB)-
MCB is an electromechanical device which protect
the electrical circuit from an over-current, that may
effect from short circuit, over load or imperfect design.
This is a better option as compare to fuse.
