LIGHTNING PROTECTION
2.0. Design basis:
a. Lightning calculation are carried based on IEC 62305-Part 1, 2 & 3.
b. Thunderstorm days per year Td (Isokeraunic level) is five as as per Annexure-3
c. The risk are calculated considering the lightning protection level-LPL-II as per IEC 62305-1
d. The risk analysis is carried out for all the buildings/structures.
For the substation part, the risk are calculated considering need of the lightning protection to the
e.
structure and not for the service as per the clause no. 6 of the IEC-62305-2.
f. The tolerable risk (RT) = 10-5 is considered as per the IEC-62305-2 Table-4 L1 Loss of human life or
permanent injuries.
2.1. Design criteria:
Following procedure carried out for the lightning protection design calculation for the various structures and
buildings of this project.
2.1.1 Type of Risks:
The type of the risk shall be associated with loss L1 and it will be evaluated accordingly.
R1 Risk of loss or permanent injury of human life.
2.1.2. Procedure for Assessment of Risk:
Risk to be evaluated in a structure.
Risk R1 for structure associated with loss of life is calculated by adding all the components of the
risk described below;
as per IEC 62305-2 , Cl 4.3, Eq.
R1 = RA1 + RB1 + RC1 + RM1 + RU1 + RV1 + RW1 + RZ1 1(Ref Annex. A)
The risk components are defined by clause 4.2 of IEC 62305-2 as follows;
Assessment of risk components due to flashes to the structure (S1)
RA1 Component related to injury to living beings caused by electric shock due to touch and
step voltages inside the structure and outside in the zones up to 3 m around
downconductors. Loss of type L1 may arise and accoedingly, this component will be
considered in the assessment.
RB1 Component related to physical damage caused by dangerous sparking inside the structure
triggering fire or explosion which may also endanger the environment All types of loss (L1,
L2, L3 and L4) may arise and accoedingly, this component will be considered in the
assessment.
RC1 Component related to failure of internal systems caused by LEMP. Loss of type L2 and L4
could occur in all cases along with type L1 in the case of structures with risk of explosion,
and hospitals or other structures where failure of internal systems immediately endangers
human life. as per the selected risk R1 this component will not be considered in the
assessment.
Assessment of the risk component due to flashes near the structure
(S2)
RM1 Component related to failure of internal systems due to LEMP, treatmrnt for this
component is similar to Rc and will not be considered in the assessment.
Assessment of risk components due to flashes to a line connected to the
structure (S3)
RU1 component related to injury to living beings by electric shock (D1), the substation buildings
electrical lines such as power cable and control cables laid under ground , hence the a
direct strike is not possible,. So it can be neglected.
RV1
component related to physical damage (D2), the substation buildings electrical lines such
as power cable and control cables laid under ground , hence the a direct strike is not
possible,. So it can be neglected.
RW1 component related to failure of internal systems (D3), as per the selected risk R 1 this
component will not be considered in the assessment.
Assessment of risk component due to flashes near a line connected to the structure(S4)
RZ1 component related to failure of internal systems (D3), as per the selected risk R 1 this
component will not be considered in the assessment.
from above
R1 = RA1 + RB1
Risk evaluation
as per IEC 62305-2 , Cl 6.1 , Eq.
RX = NX X PX X LX 5(Ref Annex. A)
NX is the number of dangerous even per annum
PX is the probability of damage to a structure
LX is the consequent loss
2.1.3. Lighting protection methods:
The one of the suitable following LPS air termination system method shall be selected for lightning
protection.
– Protection angle method;
– Rolling sphere
method;
– Mesh
method.
