NETFLIX
By Jack O’Hara
What is Netflix?
Netflix is a streaming service that costs as little as £5.99 a month and as much as £11.99 a
month, which grants their members to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows,
movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.
With Netflix, you can enjoy unlimited ad-free viewing of content in standard definition,
high definition or even ultra high definition! There's always something new to discover,
and more TV shows and movies are added every month!
Who created Netflix?
Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997 in Scott's Valley, California, by Marc Randolph
and Reed Hastings.
Both former Pure Software employees, Reed Hastings and Marc Randolf, came together
to form Netflix; originally creating it to be a physical movie rental service! The idea was
based off of the fact that they no longer wanted to pay the fees for late DVD returns,
meaning they created their own service, one that had a monthly subscription model
instead of flat payments.
Hastings said that when he founded Netflix, he had no idea whether customers would use
the service but we now know that it was definitely the right idea for them to make.
Netflix’s membership statistics
In March 2020, it was reported that Netflix currently has 182 million active subscribers,
making 20.15 billion in annual revenue.
85% of US streaming subscribers are subscribed to Netflix.
Was the most popular worldwide streaming service in November 2019, beating out
China’s iQiyi by over 50 million users and beating their closest native streaming service,
Amazon Prime Video, by almost double their subscribers.
