Group Project Presentation Outline
Introduction: Russell – 1.5 minute
• Introduce team members
• Introduce topic and presentation focus
o Topic – Fluid Power in our everyday lives
o Discuss presentation focus
▪ Russell on Fluid Power Vehicle Braking Systems
▪ Andreas on Fluid Power in Agriculture
▪ Cassi on Fluid Power Lifts
Fluid Power in Vehicle Braking Systems: Russell – 2.5 minutes
• Vehicle braking systems as part of our lives
• Non- Fluid Power brakes are essentially non-existent
o Brakes before fluid power
▪ Short history of braking methods before Fluid Power
o Hydraulic brakes
▪ Invention of hydraulic brake system
▪ Uses
• Passenger cars and trucks
• Light duty commercial vehicles
▪ Components
o Air brakes
▪ Invention of Air brake system
▪ Uses
• Heavy trucking
• Buses: city, school, and interstate
• Conclude and reiterate Fluid Power importance for stopping the vehicles we use in
our daily lives
Fluid Power in Agriculture: Andreas – 2.5 minutes
• Introduction
o How has fluid power changed the agriculture industry?
▪ History of farming
• A century ago, all agricultural operations were performed
manually which took a lot of time and manpower
• The Ferguson 3-point hitch system was the first use of
hydraulics in agriculture
▪ Corn yields in 1950 averaged 40 bushels per acre, now average corn
yield is more than 160 bushels per acre
▪ In 1962, a farmer fed 25.8 people, and today one farmer now feeds
155
o Impact of hydraulics on agriculture
▪ Reduced amount of manual power needed
▪ Lowered the risk of injury
▪ Increased efficiency and productivity
o Examples of machines used in agriculture that use hydraulic power
▪ Tractors-They use hydraulic drives and they may use a hydraulic
wheel motor or track drive motor
▪ Sprayers-They spray fertilizers and pesticides
▪ Combine harvesters-They are self-propelled and use hydrostatically
powered wheel motors
▪ Track loaders-Use hydraulic track drive motors
• Conclusion
Fluid Power Lifts: Cassi – 2.5 minutes
• Topic: Fluid power in our daily lives
• Subtopic: Hydraulic Lifts
o What are hydraulic lifts?
▪ Moves people and goods vertically
▪ Pascal’s law
o Where are hydraulic lifts used?
▪ Automobile industry-repair, maintenance, hidden garage
▪ Construction industry-boom lifts, aerial platforms, forklifts
▪ Recycling and garbage trucks-move components on truck, dump a
load
o What kinds of lifts are there?
▪ Scissor lifts
▪ Two-post and four-post lifts
▪ Boat lift
▪ Mobile column lifts
▪ Elevators
o What are some advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic lifts?
▪ Advantages
• Eliminate risk of dead drop from cables
• Easy to maintain
• Can lift heavier loads
▪ Disadvantages
• Keep fluid at proper temperature range
• Fluid leaks
• More expensive than traditional elevators
• Travel at slower speeds and shorter distances
• Hydraulic lifts are around us every day
Conclusion: Russell – 1 minute
• Bring presentation together
o Fluid Power surrounds us from all sides
o If human industry exists, there will be Fluid Power
• Thank you to audience
• Questions?
