TUTORIAL PROBLEMS
(Week 4)
Strain Analysis
Q1. A long bar section shown in Fig. T1 is under plane strain state in the xy-plane. Using the
strain gauge technique, the normal strains at a surface point in the directions as described in
the figure are obtained as 0=810-6, 30=1110-6 and 90=410-6. Find the principal strains at
the point, 1, 2 and 3.

Q2. It is found that the displacements in a machine component are described by
z 2 +b x 2− y 2 bxy −xz
u= ,v= , w=
2a a a
where a and b are the constants, and let’s assume a>0 and 0<b<0.5. Find the strain
components, principal strains and their direction cosines at point (x, y, z) = (0.5, 1, 0.1) with
respect to the x-axis.
Q3. Determine n, t and nt if xy = 0.0016 and x = y = 0 for the element in Fig. T2.

Q4. Is the following strain states possible in a continuous body subjected to deformation?
ε xx =k ( x2 + y 2 ) , ε yy =k y 2 , ε xy =2 kxy , ε zz =ε zx =ε zy=0
where k is a constant.
