Materials:
● Eloise in Paris (book)
● Writing utensils
● Blank sheet of line paper
● Hand out
● Tablet (for research)
● Dictionary (for research)
Standards:
● CCSD ELA- Literacy. S.L. 3.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3
topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
● CCSD ELA- Literacy. W. 3.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge
about a topic.
Objectives:
● Students will be able to ​discuss​ different cultures by having a conversation with a
classmate and with 75% accuracy.
● Students will demonstrate their ability to ​make use of​ resources by researching
definitions and translations with a partner with 90% accuracy.
Procedures:
1. Introduction:
Teacher will present the book “Eloise in Paris” by Kay Thompson’s. Then will ask students,
“If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be? And why?”
1. Read:
The teacher will read the book out loud to the entire class.
1. Discuss:​ ​The teacher will ask these five questions to the students after reading the
book to the class. These questions will be about the book. The questions will be
answered in a class discussion. The teacher will choose a couple students to answer
the questions.
Question 1: What places did Eloise visit in Paris?
Question 2: Why do you think Eloise likes to visit Paris?
Question 3: What is something you liked or didn’t like about Paris?
Question 4: What language is spoken in Paris?
Question 5: Do you think you would enjoy visiting Paris?
1. Activities:
Activity 1:
Students will work individual. They will receive a worksheet with words in French. They
will research the translation and meaning of the word using a tablet or dictionary. (hands on)
Activity 2:
Students will work with a partner and discuss the culture in the book (French), their culture,
and the culture of their partner. They will write them down.
Evaluation:
The teacher will ask the students words or phrases they learned and ask questions about the
culture of their classmates.
