Gravity Map 4

The document provides instructions for a gravity prospecting lab exercise involving constructing a Bouguer anomaly map with 5 mgal contours of an area, qualitatively interpreting the possible petroleum trap type based on the map, locating geological structures and best drilling sites using colored pencils, drawing the gravity profile for line X-Y and calculating depth, and sketching the expected magnetic anomaly profile if the trap was caused by basement structures.

Gravity Prospecting Practical Exercises

Lab ( )

The following figure shows the Bouguer gravity values in mgal of an area of petroleum
potentiality

You are requested to:

1- Construct the Bouguer anomaly map with a contour interval of 5 mgal.

2- Make a qualitative interpretation defining the possible type of the petroleum trap.
3- Locate on the map using two different colored pencils the possible geologic structures
and the best sites for drilling exploratory wells.
4- Draw the gravity profile X-Y and calculate the depth.
5- Sketch the expected magnetic anomaly profile across X-Y, if you know that the trap was
caused by structures within the basement.
