CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Technology is almost everywhere and is part of an individual’s daily routine.

Technology makes the work of a person much easier. It is increasingly present in all

aspects of a person’s life whether in the house, in work, and in school. According to

humanfutureworld.com, technology is an essential part of our lives today and few can

imagine living without. We achieved a lot with the help of technology, for example we

have the possibility to travel, keep in touch with friends on the other side of the earth

and cure many illnesses. Technology is wide and everyone has their own way of

understanding the meaning of technology (Karehka Ramey).

Technology is always there to aid, to guide, and to make things more organized

especially in education. According to edtechreview.com, technology in education was a

debatable topic amongst the society. Everyone had their own views on modernizing

education and making it technology aided. There were a huge number of positives and

negatives to education technology. But, gradually as technology was embraced by the

educational institutes, they realized the importance of technology in education. Through

technology, education is more convenient. In an ever changing technological world,

technology seem to be at the forefront of education (EllinaChernobislk and Mark

Granito, 2012).
Studies have showed that technology can dramatically increase student learning,

enhance student engagement, and unleash your creativity as an educator. Technology

paired up with school work is really a perfect match since it improves the student’s

ability to perform well in class and making their school works more exciting. According

to techthought.com, technology improves literacy only insofar as it improves a learner’s

ability to identify, analyze, evaluate and create media. In fact, it remains entirely

possible to fill learning spaces with apps, mobility, notifications, charts, fluid social

streams, visualized data, and all-out holograms of Greek philosophers teaching them

directly, and only improve their familiarity with these forms and their spectacle rather

than the ideas and people behind them.

Pros and cons of technology in the classroom needs in-depth examination in the

light of the controversial debate on the subject that is going on for quite some

time.Using technology in the classroom is one of those issues that makes it easy to be a

fence sitter. It’s difficult to be 100% for the use of educational technology all of the time,

when there are so many convincing arguments against it.  Most teachers find a happy

medium with technology—it’s useful in some situations, but a distraction in others (Mike

Rosso). Many people believe that the abundance of technology in our schools is

hindering students’ ability to think for themselves and changing the way they think about

their work.It is easier for the students to copy others’ work. According to linkedin.com,

Plagiarism has been plaguing teachers forever. Students today can easily access

essays, reports, class notes, tests, etc. online, making it that much more difficult for

teachers to know if the work their students hand in is original. Though there are  tech

tools to help teachers discover if the work is plagiarized, no system is perfect. Then


again, according to techaddict.com, people who have faith in the benefits of using

technology in the classroom, argue that in the current age when information is one of

the most vital components in the world economy it has become essential that instead of

following solely textbook-based instructional method students need to be mainly taught

a variety of approaches.

Community Building

Educational reformers believe education needs to be real and authentic for

student, technology can engage students in real-word activities. In the sciences,

electronic probes allow students to collect precise whether or chemical reaction data

and digitally trace trends and answer hypothesis. Graphing calculators, spreadsheet

and graphing software provide mathematics with the ability to visualize difficult

mathematical concepts. In the social sciences, electronic communication tools (e.g.

internet conferencing, e-mail, electronic discussion groups) allow students to

communicate with their peers from many parts of the world. In the language arts,

students use handheld computers and e/wireless network to create joint writing

exercises and read electronic books that allow them to explore related topic.

Family Interaction

Technology can be powerful tool for transforming learning. It can help affirm and

advance relationships between educators, student and family. The advances of family in

technology has made it very convenient to stay in touch and even see each other via

video conferences by using Skype, messenger etc.


Notable Concern

The researchers have notable concerns regarding technology. According to

futuroworking.com, it access to inappropriate content because of the biggest concern

when it comes to the use of technology in schools is how easy pornographic, violent

and other inappropriate materials can be accessed and viewed. This could cause big

problems if the material is shared with other students while in the classroom. People are

attached to their screens almost every day, which cause an entirely new set of social

issues to pop up. Second, the cyberbullying trap because it gives the students an

access to anonymous accounts and endless contact avenues can only lead to trouble.

Lastly, inevitable cheating while having an easy access to information may seem like a

great thing, it can become a real problem in a test taking environment.

With the help of the studies that the researchers gathered, the researchers

clearly understood that technology has pros and cons when it comes to education. The

researchers want to know the different perceptions of students towards the use of

technology while studying. The researchers are inspired to broaden the idea about

technology and aim to answer the questions in their heads.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to answer to the following problem:

1. What are the perceptions of students towards the use of technology while

studying?
Significance of the study

This study is significant to the students and teachers to give them more idea or

knowledge about technology and also to know how to use them correctly and

responsibly.

Students. This study is significant to the students because promotes awareness of

the different perceptions of students toward the use of technology and allow them to

reflect among themselves the potential benefits that technology can offer them while

they are studying. This may enable the students to learn according to their abilities and

helps them retain information better. According to different studies, students may be on

to something. Eighteen 2nd grade students were challenged to complete a Power Point

project about an animal. Sixteen out of the 18 students remembered more facts about

the animal after completing the presentation. These results show that technology indeed

helps students remember what they learn.

Teachers. This study is important to the teachers because it helps them track the

student’s progress. It also makes collaboration effective and makes the teaching easy.

According to gocoderz.com, there has been a great change in the teaching process

since technological devices were introduced into the classroom. If you visit a modern

school, you’ll usually find that it’s equipped with a projector, TV, computers, tablets and

an internet connection, and e-learning courses are commonly an integral part of the

curriculum. The integration of technology in education has become more relevant as

millennial, who are now teachers and parents, become reliant on devices. Despite the

numerous innovations and new ideas the education technology (EdTech)

revolution brought to the classroom, teachers can’t turn a blind eye on the drawbacks of
using technology in the classroom. All these could be achieved after the teacher has

reflected upon the different perceptions of students toward technology and this research

provides them an avenue to do so.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the perceptions of ABM 12 students in Naval State

University on the use of technology while studying.


CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter defines the research methods used to conduct the study. It contains

research design, research respondents, data collection procedure, research instruments

and data analysis which explain in a systematic way. It is hoped that the chosen

methodology will generate useful information through the collection and analysis data.

Research Design

This research utilizes the qualitative research design. The researchers are using

Phenomenological study because it will be the design used in understanding the unique

aspects of human phenomena. The “unique aspects” is referring to the perception of

human towards technology and how it affects lives.

Research Respondents

The respondents of our study are the ABM 12 students in Naval State University.

Since, ABM students deals more into technology when it comes to business ideas, in

making a marketing plan, business training, analyzing data and managing business.

The researcher will use convenience sampling because subjects are being

selected by their accessibility. Convenience sampling is a specific type of non-

probability sampling method that relies on data collection from population members who
are conveniently available to participate in study. It is a type of sampling where the first

available primary data source will be used for the research without additional

requirements.

In this research, the total sample size consists of (5) students in order to

extensively understand the research and gather the necessary data for the research.

Data Collection Procedure

First of all the researcher will make questions regarding the topic, afterward

researchers will interview the respondents, but before the researcher hand them the

questionnaire, the researcher will make informal consent to the respondents so that

there will be formality.

The researcher will interview the respondents here in Naval State University

since the respondents are ABM 12 students section A, B and C in Naval State

University. ABM 12 students are the respondents that they will be interviewing using

unstructured questionnaire. The types of data to be collected are given hand out

questionnaire.

Since the respondents are from ABM 12, and ABM 12 is composed of three

sections, the strategy of the researchers will give informed consent of those sections, so

that there will be no trouble or problem if it is time for them to be interview. The choice

of data collection method is interview. Researchers will make questions regarding to the

topic. The researchers will conduct a one-on-one or individual interview to the

respondents so that there will be privacy and the respondents would be able to express
more of his/her perception and the researchers will locate a place that is suitable for

interviewing.

In general, the researchers will gather data through interviewing the respondents

giving them unstructured questions and also giving the respondents an informed

consent about the collected research about the Perception of students towards the use

of technology whiles studying.

Research Instruments

The instruments that the researchers will use in collecting data are questionnaire

and recorder. A questionnaire is a data collection instruments mostly use in normative

surveys. This is a prepared form or document with a set of questions deliberately

designed to elicit responses from respondents or research informants for the purpose of

collecting data of information. Since the research is a qualitative research, the type of

questionnaire are going to use is unstructured questionnaire that means an open-ended

type of questionnaire calls for a free response in the respondents own words. The

respondents supplies or provides the answer to the question raised in the questionnaire.

It also constitutes questions which give the respondent an opportunity to express his or

her options from set of options.

Recording will be observed through the ear as well through the eye. Recording

is a commonplace often used to record spoken data. Recording is a great way to

capture qualitative data in ensuring descriptive validity. The researcher need to pay

closer attention to the interviewee in order to have a clear record in gathering data.
Data Analysis

Content analysis is used to analyze the data which gather from personal

interview and giving questionnaire. First, the researcher need to familiarize the gathered

data. After the researchers familiarize data, the researcher will separate the data

according to their similarities and differences.


Chapter III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This section represents the detailed examination and explanation of data

acquired in the study and discusses in great detail and comprehensive investigation of

the research problem. Its findings were based on the data collected through the

transcript of interview from the respondents. Each theme from data is discussed,

described and explained that suffice the research problem.

Knowledge to Students

Technology helps students to gain more knowledge. Through research,

students gain more knowledge. Most of the respondents uttered that through technology

they learn a lot of things. According to the respondent that “ug unsay wapa nimo na

hibaw an sa kalibutan unya na curious kapa pwedi jud nimo search kun unsa juy tinood.

So ang mga studyante maka kuha sila ug damug knowledge.” She clearly stated that if

there are things you didn’t know or you’re not familiar with you can have a research

about those things and she also said that students can gain more knowledge through

those technology. And another respondent uttered “You can Gain more knowledge and

a lot of things you recognize. It can cause more students have an advance study on a

particular subject.” The respondent clearly stated that with technology you can have an

advance study on a particular subject.

Technology is beneficial. Technology gives a lot of benefits to students. A

lot of respondents uttered that they or student benefits technology in many ways. One of

the respondents uttered that “For me as student it is very useful to us. As member of
millennial generations its more beneficial especially sa paggamit sa pag research ug

mga assignments,projects tapos maka view ta ug damung information.Tapos karun

mas high tech ang mga studyante.” The respondent clearly stated that technology is

very

useful and more beneficial to the students in making school works such as

assignments, looking ideas for projects and it can give us a lot of information. And

another respondent uttered that “Halimbawa sa student dili pa fully develop ang iya skill

sa skwelahan kay wa siyay confident. What student can do will search about the skill

like watching video then I follow ang strategy para mas ma enhanced pa iyang skill.So

ma improve jud siya through technology” the respondent stated that if the skill of a

student is not yet fully developed. Technology may help students to develop their skills.

And that clearly means that the students’ benefits technology by helping them discover

their unidentified skills.

Perceptions on Effects to the students’ life

Technology can make the students work easier. Both respondents stated

that technology is very important to them, it can save more time in doing their

assignments or projects in school. According to Joshua: “Technology is more helpful to

the students where mag rely nala sila sa assignment nila sa technology by their

guidance.” He clearly stated that technology is very helpful to students when it comes to

their assignments because they can rely on technology. According to Melanie: “The

advantage of this is more helpful for assignment then less consumed of time.” She said

also that technology is very helpful for their assignments and by using technology they

consumed lesser time.

Technology can also give negative effects to the students. Nowadays a

lot of students are being addicted when it comes in using technology and it can be the

reason why they will stop schooling. According to Joshua: “I think maka affect jud siya

like nay estudyante ma adik like computer gaming then maka pahubya jud siya sa
estudyante. I think pag maggamit ta ug technology kaylangan may limitation because

technology can be the reason na muundang ang mga uban estudyante.” He stated that

students can be addicted to technology especially in computer gaming and it also lead

them into laziness. He also stated that in using technology there must a limitation

because it can be the reason why they will stop schooling. According to Spencer Carl:

“Naa jud siya’y epekto ang technology. First damung studyante na maboang na dili mu

kaon tas kuwang ug katog wala nay panahon maghikay sa mga school works pero

dapat pagmugamit ka ug technology dapat may limitation.” According to him technology

has really an effect. Most of the students who are addicted to computer, sometimes they

merely eat foods and causes sleep deprivation.

In summary, there were four perceptions of the use of technology toward students while
studying and these are Improves learning, Advantageous, encourage, influence
students behaviour.

Chapter IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the study, and recommendations derived

from the analysis and interpretation of the data.

Summary

This study wants to determine the perceptions of technology towards the students. It

was done by interviewing 5 students from ABM. Asking some questions based on the

study that we have were used to gather some information and ideas. Through analysing

the transcript was used to find out the perceptions of the students towards technology

accommodating only the scope and delimitations of the study. After the rigid analysis of

data, the findings were formulated.

Findings

When it comes to the life of students, technology can generate can encourage great

collaboration and influence students’ behaviour. Encourage great collaboration, using

technology can make their life easier. Through technology it can improve the learning of

the students. They will not spend a lot of time to study because it’s easier to seek

information from technology. Technology is more helpful to the students where they rely

their school activities to the technology.

Influence students behaviour, technology also gives negative effects to the students like

they will be addicted and they have no time to their studies. Students will be attached to

their screens almost in everyday which cause an entirely new sets of social issues to
popup. It can help to the students to reflect among themselves the potential benefits

that technology that can offer them while they are studying.

Conclusions

The following conclusions were derived from the findings. Along our interview and

coming from what the respondents have answered we have concluded that technology

has a big impact to students in a good way. All of them stated that technology helps and

aid them in their study. Therefore we conclude that technology does no harm to

students instead it helps their performance in school, makes it easier, and you will have

advance knowledge. In general students see technology as a useful tool in their study

and in school.

Recommendations

Based on the study, various recommendations were attained.

Limit the usage of technology and be balanced on everything because student

scan be addicted to technology especially in computer gaming and it also leads

them to laziness. Students can be addicted to technology but we must make sure to

limit the usage of technology in every student and be responsible enough to use

technology in a productive and right way.

Do not forget to be physically fit and exercise because technology makes us lazy.

Too much technology makes us lazy but makes sure to balance your usage of

technology and doing other important stuffs and never forget to exercise as well
because technology causes too much comfort to the extent we forget to be physically fit

and healthy.

Do not be too much dependent on using technology. Sometimes we abuse using

technology people cheat using technology and in making reports and essay people only

copy paste the work of other in the internet. Do not be dependent and live your life also

in a natural way and use your brain too in thinking not just relying too much in

technology.

Researcher: How does technology improve the education of student?

Respondent: As what I’ve said earlier that beside na muhatag ug information. Then

ikumpara ang generation karun kaysa sa una mas angayan ang karun.

Researcher: Gi unsa man sa technology paghatag ug information sa mga estudyante?

Respondent: Syempre ang students are curious, confuse and something conscious

syempre mag research jud sila because not all student confident to ask to their teacher

that’s why mag research based on their own mentality. Dili sad tanan teacher maka

hatag ug answer sa student like mukuan pud sila ug technology. Like in America not all

teacher are using technology ang mga students pud ada pud sila own tablet kay kung

wa ang teacher didto e send lang nila ang mga assignment or task through technology.

Ang mga student sa America through technology na sila like ma wala ang ilang ballpen.

So technology based jud na sila. Here in Philippines bisan dili ta pareha sa America we

still go on surfing on the internet, searching information since we are conscious, confuse

and curious.

we relied on searching using technology and our life style is more high tech.
