THE IMPACT OF USING GADGETS…

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Gadgets are one of the best inventions, we can't deny that they make life easier for
privileged people can use it. Gadgets are also more helpful to students, especially e-learning
(electronic learning) and m-learning (mobile learning) are now vogue, but we can't deny that it
feels better when we experience it the traditional education. In modern times or nowadays it is
easier to collect information compared to before and because of this students abuse the they can
do it. Anyone can cheat if they will, on the other hand, reduce the suffering of students and the
students will learn a higher percentage because of the extent of capacity of the gadget. This study
focuses on the different sections/ strands of Grade 11 and 12 of Our Lady Of Fatima University
which is located in the fifth district of Quezon City. This research will be a big help to students by
deepening their understanding on the impact of using gadgets in learning of students. Since the
respondents are entering a new chapter in life which is the College life, it is important to boost
their academic performance to have a better chance in choosing their own choice of course.

As of today, many students are engaged in different unrelated classroom

activities.Students who spent more time surfing the Internet for reasons unrelated to classroom
work performed worse on the final exam, a study finds. The amount that the students browsed the
web for non-academic reasons was not linked to their scores or motivation, but those who
expressed more interest in the class spent less time on their laptops. Though the gadegets is now
advanced, a lot of distractions are affecting students’ academic performance. Therefore, it is
important to root ut the cause.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

Having the convenience of a mobile device gives students an edge. Besides online
lectures, people can also use it for entertainment such as movies, games, and social media. We
now live in a world that is smaller and more connected than ever before just because of mobile
phones. Students now rely on mobile phones to communicate with each other and access the ever-
changing educational resources online. Mobile phones offer students a variety of benefits and
challenges. Depending on school regulations, smartphones can either serve as a useful academic
tool or a distraction (Kajal, 2022).Students are not only allowed to bring their own digital devices
into a lecture theatre environment, but they are Many researchers have studied how students use
their devices inside and outside lecture theatres. For instance, students can receive live feedback
from their teachers using online(game-based) response systems, increasing student learning
engagement during lecture time encouraged to use them in order to support their independent
learning from their own home .Students may also use their devices to follow an alternative
teaching approach based on flipped classroom or they may take notes during lecture time to
support their independent learning at home ( Limniou , M, 2021).In today's modern age gadgets
has become a way of life. Gadgets nowadays are a basic need for everyday life style. It helps us a
lot by doing things easier and faster. Gadgets help students a lot by doing their projects more
productive and progressive. It is a small thing that anyone could have. Online education is the
biggest proof of how education has been impacted with technology, no region in this world has
remained aloof from this new form of education.

The gadgets are very useful, they help us connect to each other, they make us learn new
things and discover new things. The reason why computer technologies are invented is to help
make people's life easier and to improve their way of life, especially the students. Modern

computer technologies make studying easier and fun to the students. As long as students don't
become fanatics when it comes to gadgets, we don't think that they could have a bad influence or
a bad effect on students. (2016,Sept 11).

Electronic gadgets were initially marketed as a source of communication. Although we

cannot deny that there are various functions and benefits from using the internet and technology
through gadgets, we need to admit that it’s silently destroying the effectiveness of socialization
among a community. Many other researchers found out that normally students who spent more
time on electronic gadget had high level of dependency towards gadget, poor academic
performance and also health status(Jamaludin,2020 ). If we talk about digital and education, then
the penetration of digital media within the education sector has now grown. This penetration has
resulted in round the clock connectivity with students and different forums that are available for
different kinds of assignments or help. As the power of digital increases, there are and there will
be more applications that will assist students in development and learning. These days, children
are relying more and more on digital communication that they have totally forgot about
improving their writing skills. Many experts and experienced people say that, due to such
technology in education, students imagination is affected, their thinking ability is reduced Raja,
R., & Nagasubramani, P. C. (2018).The study shows that the pattern and intensity gadget use by
teenagers was labeled as hard to break escapism habits, shifted and worsened amid the pandemic.
Although gadgets help student to cope to their study, it still can be a form of distraction leading
the Student to focus more on their gadgets and procastinate more instead of doing their activities.
As a result, to the students intensity of screen time and excessive use of gadgets leads in them
impacting their academic performances and perceived sociability Carator, K., et al.(June 2022

Based on the result of the study that were analyzed, students who normally spent most of their
time on the electronic gadgets results to it continuesly impacting their academic performances that also
lead in students having poor grades. Showing that there was a really significant association between the
total time spent on electronic gadgets with their academic performance Jamaludin, T., et al.,(January
2020).

Traditionally, learning is dependent on teacher-centered strategies. But with the transformations

in the teaching methodologies and the availability of gadgets in the classroom, learning has deviated away
from this focus.Retention is one crucial factor in determining whether students are successfully learning
in class. Correlatively, the activation of students’ multiple senses while using electronic gadgets in class,
may help with their knowledge retention. Both students and teachers can also customize the ways through
which information can be presented in class using electronic gadgets. These ways usually improve
participation inside the classroom Jim Collison (2020 ).Smartphones give students instant, portable access
to many of the same education-enhancing features as an Internet-connected PC, such as online
information searching, file sharing, and engaging with instructors and peers. The findings indicate that a
mobile phone is an extremely useful tool for studying, since the majority of respondents utilised their
phones for this reason. The proliferation of cell phones creates a plethora of opportunities and problems
for todays students. Cellphones are indisputably convenient and useful study aids, but they may also be a
harmful source of distraction depending on a student's mindset and use behaviour Ijaraset (2023, July
18).The use of Gadget inside school environment has many benefits for both students and teachers and
generally provides many conveniences in the teaching and learning process.Computer devices are located
in Language Laboratory and Library. So that students who need to access the internet can easily use the
facilities in those room. Or if students need to support their learning process by looking for more

Also, online classes these days are a challenge to many students. They are at risk of developing
screen fatigue and burnout. Many are also having a hard time separating their school tasks from the
personal duties at home.Online classes might give an impression of being free all the time. Yet this is not
the case. It is highly encouraged to set aside time for schoolwork and “me” time. But when the situation
calls for it, go and stretch your patience. Students are also facing a hard time adapting to online
classes.Through these advanced tools, technical skills can be exercised. But more than this, it’s instilling
learning as a skill for life.

5
THE IMPACT OF USING GADGETS…

Tech must be used to engage students to embrace love of learning new things. It must help them
explore things that interest them. Also, it must bring limitless possibilities of learning to fully equip them
in the future. The Importance of Technology in Philippine Education ( 2021, March 15 ).The technology
offered both educators and students a various options and flexibility in their teaching and learning
methods.

The findings indicated shows were no significant correlations between the impact of using
electronic devices, and academic performance. It was observed that students were aware of the positive
and negative effects of these gadgets, and were responsive to this knowledge.

The study suggests that the educational use of gadgets can be the foundation for the development
of responsible, capable, and effective tools in the future. As a result, school principals and administrators
are encouraged to permit the use of gadgets by both students and teachers in the classroom. However, it is
recommended that there should be a reminders about the potential negative consequences for using
excessive gadget. "Electronic gadgets are beneficial in the schools. Therefore, the principals/school heads
should allow learners and teachers use gadgets in class. However, constant reminder should be instigated
in the various negative effects of these gadgets (Balbaguio, 2020).

According to study of Sean M. Corcoran, Ed.D(2020) Filipino students suffering from the technology gap
are the ones that would benefit the most from these educational tools it’s hard to overestimate
technology’s power in bridging the education gap. Roadblocks such as time, money, or distance can be
swept away with a single device or a free, reliable Internet connection. it is difficult to imagine any part of
our lives without internet access and devices. Technological advances have not only made our lives more
convenient, but they have allowed those of us with access to these technologies to make great strides in
education.Technical tools like laptops and mobile phones can distract students from their learning activity
and cause disruption to class room activity, if not used properly.Access to information increases the
awareness of students, help them in increasing thinking and creativity in learning tasks, provide quick
access to subject material and engage them in adopting strategies which can help in maximising the
quality of learning. The process of learning can become very rich if students have access to latest
information on subjects, can analyse the information quickly by manipulating it on computers through
graphical displays and experiment with the information to effectively communicate their results and
conclusions using the technical tools. On the other hand, technology can also be used to distract students
in the class room from their learning activity Carbonilla Gorra, V., & Bhati, S. S. (2016). They could also
provide meaningful activities using electronic gadgets and computer-assisted instruction. They could find

ways that could make electronic gadgets as teaching tool and not means of distraction, thus helping a
great deal with the students.Teachers can now guide further their students about proper attitude in using
electronic gadgets.

In this way the teacher would have an ease on delivering their lesson and could provide good
teaching – learning performance to their students Antigo, C. L., & de Guzman, M. F. D. (2021). Excessive
phone use has already impacted academic achievement and perceived sociability of students, but the
intensity of screen time has worsened with the transition to online learning. Consequently, students tend
to delay their tasks as they are easily distracted Caraig, D. J. (2022). It could be inferred that in using
electronic gadgets in an educational manner, gadgets could be a foundation of good, strong, progressive
and effective students in the class.Furthermore, it can be inferred that using electronic gadgets in the
teachings and learning strategies could help in enhancing and improving the academic routine of the
students as well as teachers.. Although, children need to be reminded on their limitations to these gadgets,
they are also challenged to use and manipulate electronic gadgets for their academic advancement and to
make them acquire unlimited knowledge about their specific field of discipline (Balbaguio, 2020).

Smartphones are used for calculations of complex mathematical computations but cannot confirm
if the process of calculations are correct to the solutions required to math problems. This gadget is only
helpful in making the calculations easier .On the other hand, students might be tempted to use the other
functions of the gadget while using this during math classes. This could distract the students’ focus on the
lessons because they will have the tendency to explore these functions such as surfing the internet, social
media, games, and the like during math classes Jeffrey Astillero (2022 ).The use of gadgets has a
moderately positive impact in learning because of its features that extend the ability of the students to do
more things but it also has a slightly negative impact because students are most likely to be distracted by
it.

This indicates that the use of gadgets extends the ability of students to search information,
develop and entertain their selves with its features like the internet, student-friendly websites and
educational applications ( Idos et al 2017 ). Overuse of gadgets will certainly affect the students’
academic performance and health. Convenience does not mean that we should pay lots of attention on
gadgets but try to find anappropriate way to make it as a useful tool.Students that spend excessive time on
using gadgets becomedependent on it and it is believed that their academic performance diminish

proportionately. The researchers have conceived the idea of limiting the usageof gadgets as it poses a
threat on the academic performance of the students ( Ampatuan et al 2019 ).
