How are you this morning?
Well! That’s Great!
Now, before we start our class this morning, I want
everyone to stand for the prayer.
(The teacher lead the prayer) Amen.
A. New Lesson
a. Motivation
Do you have a favorite song? Yes, teacher.
I also have a favorite song and I would like to share it to
you. I will play the song and you can sing along if you
are familiar with it but make sure your voice will not be
too loud to disturb other classes.
(Teacher plays the song)

Yes, most lines of the song have “I can”. This has
something to do with our lesson for today, because today
we are going to use can, must, and will appropriately.
B. Generalization
But before we proceed in using can, must, and will
appropriately, let us first discuss what modals are and
what could be the proper usage of these modals of ability,
obligation, and willingness.
MODAL VERBS
Modal verbs in English (also called modal auxiliary
verbs) are used to express ability, obligation, necessity
and etc.
Modal verbs add meaning to the main verb in a sentence
by expressing possibility, ability, permission, or
obligation.
Here are several modal verbs:
-Can
-Must
-Will
We will discuss the functions of each modals one by one.
CAN
Can expresses ability
We use can to talk about things that we are able to do in
the present or the immediate future.
Examples:
I can speak both English and Italian.
I can sing and dance.
I can read and write.

MUST
-Must expresses firm obligation
We use must to talk about obligations and when we are
sure something is true
Examples:
I must eat at least three times a day.
I must study my lessons.

WILL
-Will can express willingness
We use will to talk about the future, especially for
predictions and promises.
Examples:
I will take care of you.
I will wait for you.

Now, let’s have an activity. This is to see if you now
know how to use can, must, and will appropriately. This
activity is called “Pass the Ball”. I have here a ball and a
box. Inside the box are sentences for our activity. While I
play the music, you will pass the ball until the music
stops. The one holding the ball will pick a paper
(situation/sentence) in the box in which he/she will
answer/respond using the words can, must, or will.
Student who can give the correct answers will get an
additional (2) points for the quiz later.
Example:
The sentence/situation is “I am a singer. Therefore
________”.
Answer: I can sing.

What are the modal verbs we discussed earlier?
The modal verbs that we have discussed are can,
must and will.
When do we use the modal can?
We use the modal can in expressing ability.
How about the modal verb must?
We use the modal verb must when expressing
obligations.
And the modal will?
It is used when we want to express willingness.
