1. Explain the term output

2. Explain the types of output
3. Explain the term output device
4. Identify the categories of output devices
5. Identify the output devices for each category
6. Explain how the output devices are used and when used
7. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using the devices

The term Output

To show processed data (more info found in textbook)

Types of output

Softcopy- info which is displayed or heard which cannot be touched or held.

Hardcopy- tangible info which is permanent and can be touched.

Output device Definition

Hardware components that allows user to get information from a computer.

Categories of Output Devices

1) Visual Display Unit (VDU)-Monitor

Areas to notes

1. Colour
2. Size
3. Resolution
4. Technology
2) Printers
3) Audio
4) Plotters

Terms relating to output

Microfilm

Machine readable

Human readable

Output Devices for each category

VDU- Monitor

Size- This is the dimension of the screen which shows the output. Common desktop screens are from
14inches to 19inches measured diagonally.

Colour- The number of colours displayed can vary from 16 to 256 to 64 thousand to 16.7 million. The
more colours the smoother the graphics appear, especially photos.

Monochrome made up of one colour in a variety of shades.

-Orange, blue and green with variations of one color

Resolutions- Is made up of tiny dots called pixels (picture elements)

A monitor contains a matrix or lyoniums dots of red, green and blue (RGB)

Resolution determines how clear and detailed the output screen can be. Pictures on a screen are made
up of tiny dots (1 dot= 1 pixel). The more pixels per inch, the clearer and more detailed the graphic is.

Eg. Changing resolution on youtube

Types of Display Monitors

LED- Light emitting diode

LCD- Liquid crystal display

CRT- Cathode ray tube (found in huge back televisions)

Printers

Impact-It strikes through a ink ribbon that hits the paper

The hammer hits the ribbon and hits the paper

Disadvantages
 It is noisy
 Doesn’t print acceptable graphics

Advantages

 Can print in huge quantity

Impact Printers-Dot matrix and Daisy Wheel

Pg 37

Non-Impact Printer

Thermal printer- 3rd fastest

Inkjet- 2nd Fastest ( Sprays the ink) 4-6 per min

Laser- The fastest of the three 8-12 pages per min

The plotter

Used for car designs

Used in architecture

Used by engineers for drawings

Types

Flatbed Plotter

Drum Plotters

Audio

Speaker
Headphone

Ear buds/ear phones

Terms

Microfiche (Plural of Microfilm)
