Cummins: Fault Code: 376 PID: P1691

This document provides troubleshooting steps for fault code 376 related to the VP44 fuel pump RPM and fueling error on Cummins engines. False alarms from speed transitions can trigger this fault. The troubleshooting process involves recalibrating the ECM, checking for air in the fuel lines, and comparing RPM readings from different sources to check for discrepancies. Clearing the fault code after verifying it remains inactive completes the repair.

VP44 FUEL PUMP RPM AND FUEL ERROR

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 376

PID: P1691

VP44 Fuel Pump

DESCRIPTION
This diagnostic is meant to act as a speed and fueling rationality
check between the engine electronic control module (ECM) and the
VP44 fuel pump control module.
False alarms caused by speed transitions, such as sudden
accelerations or engine stall checks, can trigger this fault code.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The logic for this fault code is contained in the ECM and the VP44
fuel pump control module.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and check to see if the fault code is active at engine start-up. Read the fault
codes using the diagnostic tool.
NOTE: If fault Code 376 is inactive, but other fault codes are active, troubleshoot the active fault codes.

Fault Code 376 inactive?

Yes - Go to applicable fault code(s) No - Go to 2A

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and recalibrate the ECM with updated calibration code. Refer to the
diagnostic tool manual for the appropriate procedure.

ECM recalibrated with updated code Fault Code 376 goes inactive?

Yes - Calibrations are available on the latest ESDN No - Go to 3A

Go to 5A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and check for air in the fuel lines. Open all fuel lines, and prime the engine to
eliminate the air from the fuel system.
No air in fuel lines?

Yes - Go to 4A No – Go to 5A

Step 4A) Turn key switch ON and compare rpm readings from different sources as follows:
- Measure the vehicle’s rpm at the vibration damper or fam pulley with a handheld tachometer or similar rpm
measurement device.
- Compare the vehicle rpm reading measured by the tachometer with the rpm reading from the VP44 fuel
engine speed sensor (as shown on the diagnostic tool monitor screen).

Tachometer rpm reading is equal to engine-speed-sensor-calculated reading, and tachometer

reading is equal to or less than a 50-rpm difference from VP44-fuel-pump-calculated reading at
steady-state conditions?

Yes - Go to 5A No - Go to 5A

Step 5A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and
road-test for 30 minutes. Verify Fault Code 376 is inactive.

Fault Code 376 inactive?

Yes - Go to 5B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps, or contact a

have been completed and rechecked
Go to 1A

Step 5B) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
