Unswitched Battery Supply Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The ECM receives unswitched battery input through the engine
harness. There are two in-line 10-amp fuses and three 7.5-amp
fuses in the unswitched battery wire to protect the engine harness
from overheating. The battery return wires are connected directly
to the negative (-) battery post.
Disconnect all aftermarket devices from the battery supply circuit.
Make sure the proper size fuses are being used (10-amp fuse or 7.5-
amp fuse).
COMPONENT LOCATION
The ECM is connected to the battery by the engine harness. This
direct link provides a constant power supply for the ECM. The
location of the battery will vary with the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM). Refer to the OEM manual for battery
location.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect all aftermarket devices from the battery supply circuit.
Disconnect the engine harness from the battery at the positive (+) 23-pin Deutsch connector. Check the
battery voltage. Measure the battery voltage from pin B of the 23-pin OEM connector to engine block
ground.

Less than (+) 32 VDC?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Install the battery system correctly


Go to 2A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect all aftermarket devices from the battery supply circuit.
Disconnect the engine harness from the battery at 23-pin Deutsch connector. Check the battery ground.
Measure the resistance from pin E of the 23-pin OEM connector to ground, as well as from pins F, H, P, and
W.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Replace the OEM harness


Go to 2A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and inspect the alternator for normal operation.

Alternator functioning normally?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Repair or replace the alternator


Go to 2A

Step 2A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code 442 is inactive.

Fault Code 442 inactive?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local


Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 2B) Connect all components, turn key switch ON and clear inactive fault codes using the diagnostic
tool.
All fault Codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes


with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
