- She wasn’t (was not) there. / They weren’t (were not)
tired.
? Were you happy? Yes, we were. / No, we weren’t. Was it
good? Yes, it was. / No, it wasn’t.
- Remember that you is singular and plural:
- Were you happy? (one person) – Yes, I was.
- Were you angry? (more than one person) – No, we
weren’t

Past simple

- We use the past simple to talk


about actions that began and
ended in the past:
- Fauja Singh began running
because he didn’t want to
sit at home all day.

- It is often used with past time expressions. Notice - We put these past time expressions at
that you can use ago, last, yesterday in many the beginning or at the end of the
expressions: sentence:
- last night / last week / last Monday / last - I bought some new tennis shoes
month / yesterday.
- last year / last Christmas - Did you go running last night?
- an hour ago / five days ago / a week ago / a - This morning, I went for a run at 6
month ago a.m.
- the day before yesterday
- yesterday / yesterday morning / yesterday
afternoon / yesterday evening
- this morning
- at night / at three o’clock
- in 2000 / in March
- on Monday / on Tuesday / on the weekend

Regular verbs
+ I / You / He / She / It / We / They wanted to run.
- I / You / He / She / It / We / They didn’t (did not) move to
the US.

Yes, I / you / he / she / it / we / they did.

Irregular verbs
- There are no specific rules for the way we form the past simple affirmative of
irregular verbs. Here are some examples:
- break, broke; wake, woke; buy, bought; catch, caught; think, thought

Past simple questions
- For wh- questions, we use:
- question word + did + subject + verb
- What did he do? Who did he call?
- For questions with be, we use:
- question word + be
- How old was he?
- Where were you last night?
