Past simple - El pretérito simple

- Describe an actions that happened at a specific time in the past and are now
completed.: Describe acciones que sucedieron en un momento específico del
pasado y que ahora están completadas.

1. Regular verbs - Verbo regular

- add -ed to the base form of the verb

Example: cook - cooked

watch -watched

listen - listened

bake - baked (hornear)

work - worked

wash - washed

2. Irregular verbs - Verbo irregular

- do not follow a specific pattern and change in different ways. So we have to


remember.

Example: go -went

have - had

ride - rode

write - wrote

read - read

wear - wore

go - went

get - got

sing - sang (sing a song)


make - made

3. Negative sentences

I didn't like the movie last night.

She didn't go to the party yesterday.

He went cycling yesterday afternoon.

=> He didn't go cycling yesterday afternoon.

I read a newspaper yesterday morning.

=> I didn't read a newspaper yesterday morning.

We went skiing last summer.

=> We didn't go skiing last summer.

4. Questions

Did you see the football match last night?

Did your daughter call you yesterday?

Leo sent me a message yesterday.

=> Did Leo send you a message yesterday?

They cooked dinner last night.

=> Did they cook dinner last night?

She sang some songs with her friends at the party.

=> Did she sing some songs with her friends at the party?

5. Time expressions:

- Yesterday/ yesterday morning/ yesterday afternoon


- Last week/month/year

- Two days ago

Today is Tuesday.

Two days ago was Sunday

- 2 hours ago

- 10 minutes ago
