(b) An operating system (OS) is a special programme that manages the other
programmes on the computer as well as the computer hardware.

 It acts as an interface between the user and the computer


 Allows the management of files; run, switch between and close other programs

Application software is the name given to the programmes that perform specific tasks for
users.

 Common operating systems: Mac Os, Windows, MS-DOS, Linux, Unix

 Application software: Spreadsheet software, CADD, Word Processing software,

 Decide what information you want to organize electronically


 Organise your files into folders
 Copy, move, delete and rename files and folders
 See what files are on a particular disk
 Find out information about the files
 Create sub folders
