DISADVANTAGES OF MOBILE PHONES

Mobile phones:

Mobile or cell phones are now a day’s an integral part of modern

telecommunications in every individual life. In many countries, over half of the
populations use mobile phones and the mobile phone market is growing rapidly.
But, still Nowadays the statistics of using mobile phones for unwanted purposes
are increased.

Introduction for CON’S of Mobile phones:

The mobile phone is a product of science which has become very important
for us. Thus most of us use mobile phones like these are our friends, and that
causes various problems. There are so many disadvantages of using mobile
phones. Constant distraction, social disruption, never-ending workdays, ongoing
expenses, cause of accidents, health problems, youth crimes, etc. are some of
the major disadvantages of using mobile phones.

 Mobile phones are one of the main reasons behind the wastage of our
valuable times. Mostly the students of school, colleges and teenagers are
affected by wastage of time due to over usage of mobile phones.
 They spend too much time using mobile phones for playing video games,
chatting, watching movies, and thus they waste their precious time.

As billions of people use mobile phones globally, a small increase in the

incidence of adverse effects on health could have major public health
implications on long term basis. Besides the number of cell phone calls per day,
the length of each call and the amount of time people use cell phones are
important factors which enhance the health related risk.

The following factors are the DEMERITS / CON’S of Mobile phones.

 Major Health issues.

 Reduced time with family.
 Socially Disruptive.
 Mobile Radiation impact
 Under Surveillance.
 Spam
 Involvement in unwanted things.
 Cyber-bullying
 Issue while Driving.
 Educational impact.

1. Major health issues:

Mobile phones are status symbols. As children enter puberty and head
towards their teenage years, they come under social pressure to demand phones
that are more expensive and fashionable, increasing emotional and financial
strain on parents and guardians. This can significantly reduce or disrupt their
sleep patterns. Over time, their mental and physical health and development can
be compromised.

2. Reduced time with family:

This is another major disadvantage of having a mobile phone by a

student. Before these phones and technology, students spent plenty of time with
their family. Now students spend their free time with the mobile phone, either
playing games or chatting with friends via mobile phones. They have no idea
about how much family is important in their life. Spending time with the family
is one of the most important things for everyone and we can learn more good
stuff when we freely talk with our family. A family chain is very important and
tries to make them understand that.

3. Socially Disruptive:

Disruption can happen in multiple ways. For example, a phone goes off during a
musical or theater performance, somebody spends a dinner party texting rather
than engaging with the other guests, or a family event is disrupted by someone
receiving an important call from work. Mobile phones can destroy the
atmosphere at events and undermine social meet ups.

4. Mobile Radiation impact:

Some studies suggest that the electromagnetic radiation produced by
mobile phones causes harm to human health. Brain cancer has been cited as a
possible effect of long term regular phone usage. However, it should be noted
that there is no solid agreement on the level of harm that may or may not be
caused by mobile phones.

5. Under surveillance

Mobile phones are increasingly used to track people's movements.

This may seem fine for catching criminals, but it is another step towards a
surveillance society, where citizens have no privacy and don't even know when
or who might be tracking them, never mind possesses the ability to challenge
the threats to their privacy.

6. Spam

Receiving unsolicited sales calls or texts is annoying and disruptive.

Often, they don't even involve real callers but are computer-generated. Money-
making scams are becoming increasingly more common and sophisticated, and
often target the most vulnerable members of society.

7. Involvement in Unwanted things

In today’s world, mobile phones may change student’s habits. Through

mobile phones, you can search lots of bad stuff. Nowadays almost all the
students are addicted to porn videos and some other porn activity websites. In
the 21st century, the sexual activities and violent acts are considerably growing
day by day. That is really bad. This is why we can see lots of students with
cigarettes and drugs. This is one of the major flaws with the rise of technology.

8. Issues while Driving

Mobile phone use while driving, including talking on the phone,

texting, or operating other phone features, is common but controversial. It is
widely considered dangerous due to distracted driving. Being distracted while
operating a motor vehicle has been shown to increase the risk of accidents.
- It is one of the major issues that happen in Tamilnadu

A 2011 study reported that over 90% of college students surveyed text
(initiate, reply or read) while driving.  The use of mobile phones while driving
has been brought under dangerous driving category in the amended Motor Vehicle
Act and attracts a fine of up to Rs 5,000 or up to one year jail or both.

9. Cyber-bullying

 Bullying is a form of power play which involves unprovoked teasing

which in certain situations changes into abuse by one or more children
with the intention to hurt, cause pain and distress to another child
repeatedly. As the usage of mobile phones has gone up among tweens
and teens, this technology has turned into a convenient choice for
bullies.
 Internet trolling is a common form of bullying that takes place in
an online community in order to elicit a reaction or disruption, or
simply just for someone's own personal amusement. Cyber stalking is
another form of bullying or harassment that uses electronic
communications to stalk a victim; this may pose a credible threat to
the victim.
10. Educational impact

Smartphone’s are being used in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering and

other fields already.  Smartphone’s have great potentials to enhance the learning
process due to their computing capabilities. On the other hand, Smartphone’s
pose disadvantages when allowed in higher education if specific and well-
designed learning activities are not prepared.
They could be a big distraction for students since they could easily be
constantly checking personal emails, social networks, or navigating non-class
related websites.  Thus, they would not be paying attention to class content or
discussions.

How to overcome from these factors?

87% of young adults say that their Smartphone never leaves their side,
while 80% of Smartphone users check their phone within 15 minutes of waking
up. Smartphone addiction is becoming a big problem.

Here the TIPS to OVERCOME:

 Turn off notifications.
 When you feel the urge to check your phone, close your eyes and take a
deep breath.
 Delete all the social media apps on your phone.
 Delete all the apps you don’t use.
 Set specific boundaries for Smartphone usage.
 Turn off your phone before going to bed.
 Use an actual alarm clock.
 Before you start work, put your phone at least 10 feet away from you.
 Use apps to track and restrict your Smartphone usage.
 Wear a watch so you don’t need to check your phone for the time.

Conclusion:

In this modern Era, we can’t able to deny the Mobile phones .So; I like to
conclude as,

“LET LEARN TO USE WISELY”
