The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

We live in age in which technological know– how is turning into more and

increased dominant. A today analyze about has advised that college students

test their phone on common every and each 8.6minutes.We seemed at the

present day or not or now not this tech revolution is having an effect on learn

about room teaching and pupil grades. It is a time– honored faith that

effects on the student’s education. There are several ways to make a study like

this interesting; The most obvious of these ways will be to look at the results as

they were published.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the impact of the excessive use of smartphones

of Grade 12 learners of Dadiangas North High School. Specifically, it sought to

answer the following questions;

1. How many hours do grade 12 learners spends in using smartphone during free

time?

2. In what way excessive use of smartphones affect the learners in terms of;

2.1. Work assignments

2.2 Time study

2.3 Classroom responsibility

2.4 Socialization with classmate

2.5 Family

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the excessive use of smartphones during free time

and its impact to the grade 12 students of Dadiangas North High School.
This study delimited to Dadiangas North High School with 30 (thirty)

respondents from the Senior High Department.

Significance of the study

This research aimed to identify the impact of excessive use of

smartphones of Grade 12 learners of Dadiangas North High School during free

time. This study benefited the following::

School Administration – this study served as a basis for the school to find

interventions to help lessen the students’ use of smartphones.

Teachers – this study provided an opportunity for them to come up with an

alternative way to distract the students in using their smartphones during their

free time.

Students – this served as an eye opener for them to lessen their use of

smartphones as the result of this research.

Future Researcher – this served as a reference and a guide for future

researchers if they would like to conduct a similar research.

Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Excessive use of Grade 12 Learners of

Smartphones during Dadiangas North
Free Time High School

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework

This framework explain how the independent variable affects the

dependent variable. The independent variable is the excessive use of

smartphones and the dependent variable is the grade 12 learner of Dadiangas

North High School. Hence, excessive use of smartphones affects the Grade 12

learners.

Local Literature
The smartphone is now ubiquitous in every life, with approximately two billion

users worldwide (Miller, 2012).

The latter problem area is of interest for the current study,as smartphones can

distract us to a point where we are unable to achieve a state of flow at work (see

Montag & Walla, 2016

Technology certainly supports better learning oppurtunities such as internet

resources and availability of mobile computers;however, excessive or

problematic smartphone use can have negative impacts on study-related

activities. This concepts is defined as “excessive use of smartphones that

interferes with the daily lives of the users” (Elhai,Levine,Alghraibeh, et al.,2015;

Turel & Serenko, 2012).

Moreover, understanding the impact of smartphone use on academic

performance is an important research issue to address. Smartphone over use

can impair academic functioning, when students use their phones in class

instead of paying attention, and play on their phones in the evenings instead of

studying and doing homework. For example, frequent interruptions due to

excessive smartphone use could be associated with performance loss, (Duke &

Montag, 2017).
Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter presented the method of research used, the research design,

research instrument, the respondents, data gathering procedure and statistical

method.

Research Design

The study used a quantitative approach. It included collecting of data by

answering the questions regarding the study. A survey questionnaire was

provided to the respondents for the data collection analysis and interpretation.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Dadiangas North High School. The school is

located at Santol Street, Brgy. Dadiangas North, General Santos City.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study were randomly selected 30 (thirty) Senior

High School students ranging from the age 16 – 20 years old from 5 different

sections.

Research Instrument

The researchers developed a self-made questionnaire consisting of 20

questions about the impact of excessive use of smartphone. The researchers

incorporated the Likert Scale ranging from 1 as Strongly Agree to 5 as Strongly

Disagree.

Sampling Method
Data Gathering Procedure

The data collection was done after the researchers were permitted to

conduct the survey by their research adviser. After the adviser granted them the

permission to conduct the survey, the researchers went into the respective

classrooms of their targeted respondents and asked for their precious time by

reading the letter of pardon. The researchers briefly oriented the respondents on

what to do in the survey questionnaires and guided them all throughout the

survey interview process. After the respondents answered the questionnaires,

gratitude then collected and tabulated the data.

Statistical Method

The researchers used the following statistical method for the analyzation

of the collected data.

Weighted Average Mean was used to find the average response of the

respondents about the excessive use of smartphones. The method used the

following formula:

∑x
x=
N

Where:

x = mean

∑ = summation

x = the total response of the respondents on each indicator

N = the total population of the respondents
