Unit One: Features of Higher Education
Reflective Activity 1 – P. 8
Discuss the mission of your university from the point of view of content, relevance, clarity,
precision, etc
1. Reflection on the Mission
A mission statement defines what line of business a company is in, and why it exists or what
purpose it serves. A mission statement should define the company’s corporate strategy. In line
with this Injibara University has also set their mission by giving more emphases on three
important issue: Providing quality education, conducting problem solving research and outreach.
In my opinion the mission is good in term of content, relevance, clarity, precision. But to put in
practices there are a lots job to be done. Let take example, since the opining of Injibara
University many research and community services were done. I have doubt whether those done
activity practical alleviate the community problem.
2. Reflection on Vision
The vision of Injibara University is to become one of the best compressive university in Ethiopia
and renowned university in Africa in 2030. Regarding to vision of our institution, it is possible to
say that the stated vision is over ambitious. Since the institution new, I don’t think that it can be
practical. But the good thing is that even if we cannot achieve by 2030 it is possible to achieve
for extended time. I mean that it a matter of time bonded.
3. How effectively are the teachers in your HEI working towards realizing the mission and
vision of the institution?
The mission and vision of organization is not realized unless it shared with the all stakeholder. In
line with this our institution mission and vision I can say that majority of academic staff do
his/her best, although it is difficult to say we are effective.
4. What are the core values of your institution?
Customer First
Quality in All
Academic Freedom
Value for Indigenous Knowledge
Empowering Innovation
Diversity and Tolerance
Sustainability
5. To what extent are the above core values practiced?
Although we have best core value there are so many obstacle which affect the actual
implementation. For instant if take, giving Value for Indigenous Knowledge which is one
core value stated, current curriculum doesn’t incorporate this core value. As per to my
understanding those stated values existed in every organization, the problem is how much
we really practiced is the big question. When i say this, I don’t mean that all of this core
values is not practiced in our intuition.
Reflective Activity 2 - P. 8
1. How relevant and important are the various leadership positions for the effective
functioning of HEIs?
Leadership is one of the most important factors in any institution’s future.
However, leaders in higher education, perhaps more so than in many other organizations, have
the interests of a multitude of sometimes contrary stakeholders to consider, influence and impact,
including students, academic staff, administrative staff, departmental heads and government and
education authorities. They need to demonstrate the ability to work respectfully and effectively
with a sizeable diversity of people and viewpoints.
Academic leaders need to ensure their institution has the facility to respond quickly and
constructively to the almost constant challenges it faces. To do this they need to lead by
positioning and most significantly implementing effective change through creating a supportive
working environment for their staff – one that fosters and sustains the required changes and also
allows for successful implementation of new initiatives.
2. To what extent does the top leadership understand and support the efforts of lower
academic units to achieve the ultimate goals of the institution?
Although the structure of HEIs is length and complex through top down and down up in the form
report the top leader can understand and support lower academic unit. In opinion the
organization structure of HEIs needs improvement.
3. From the point of view of need and efficiency, how satisfactory is the organization of
HEIs?
As I try to mention in second question I am not comfortable with current structure of HEIs due
to the fact that there are a lot of duplication of effort and even some times there is a problem of
job description for some position.
Reflective Activity 3 - Pp. 8 - 9
1. How reasonable are the rights and duties of the academic staff as indicated in the
Senate Legislation of your University?
Senate legislation guiding principle for academic staff by stating benefit and burden clearly. For
making any kind of decision we need to refers this legislation. The major problem I noticed is we
are not proactively read it, rather than when face certain problem or a decision to be made.
2. To what extent are higher education teachers (in your university) performing according
to their duties and responsibilities as indicated in the Senate Legislation?
In my opinion all academic staff is abide by senate legislation. But sometime due to negligence
there might be a room for not performing according to their duties and responsibilities as
indicated in the Senate Legislation.

DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING MANAGEMENT
Unit Two: The Role of Reflection among Higher Education Teachers
Reflective Activity 4 - P. 12
1. What do reflection, reflective practice and reflective teaching mean to you?
Reflection in teaching refers the ability of instructor to teach his/her students by making link
theoretical knowledge with real environment. Reflective teacher teach his /her students by
considering the important of content of the course to students real life. To do this he/she employ
reflection on action, in action, for action.
2. How well do you practice reflective thinking to deepen your own understanding and to
improve your teaching competence?
From the three types of reflection, reflection in action has been well practiced. I have good class
room management skill. This helps me to identify the performance of my students which is
important input for preparing evaluation too.
3. Based on your teaching experiences, give examples of reflection on, in and for action.
Reflection in action: in most cases when I teach theatrical concept I try to take example for
student’s real world practices like, industry. Sometimes I also practice reflection on by telling
student past senior if I believe that students take good lesson. Example success history of
particular company or an individuals.
4. How well have you handled the technical, practical and critical levels of reflection?
Elaborate.
Handling the technical, practical and critical levels of reflection skill is not sudden action it
demand long time experience. In line with this what I thin am good is technical part. I am also on
the way to develop the piratical and critical level of reflection for future.
Reflective Activity 5 - P. 14
1. What are the different techniques of reflection that you have been using in your reflective
learning endeavors? Why did you use them and how?
From technique of reflection I have been using only critical incident yet. I use this techniques in
class room for instance when students manifest bad behavior. Sometimes I face students who
disturb other students. I immediately gives piece of advice not to repeat such mistake for future.
2. Which reflective technique is more preferable and appropriate for teaching/learning and for
lifelong learning? How?
In my opinion no best alternative. Depending on situation we faced one techniques might be
preferred form others. In addition in each techniques there is objective to be achieved after
application of particular techniques. Each of them has specified quality in reflection teaching
approach which enhance skill of instructors in higher education.
Reflective Activity 6 - P. 15
1. What have you understood about reflective higher education teachers in higher education
from the above cases?
From given cases, I understood the quality of thee teachers: Balcha,Endelibu and Tsion.
To begin form Balcha is reflective teachers due to the fact that he fulfill the criteria of reflective
teachers; he plan lesson, manage class room, find immediate solution if he faced problem in class
room, he also assess his strength and weakens on continues bases.
Endelibu as the name indicate is so carless and not reflective teacher. All quality of reflective
teachers which practiced by Balcha is not practed by this instructor.
When you come to Tsion she is partial reflective teacher. But to reflective teachers like Balcha
she missed some quality of reflective teachers such as luck of class room management, afraid of
asking senior staff to improve her skill since reflective teacher is always learner.
3. How effective are the above cases in changing your attitude towards applying reflective
thinking in your study and in your teaching? Explain.
The case are effective because they came up with three different behavior of teachers in line with
how well they are practicing reflective teaching. Form me for now and for my future endeavor
Balcha is/will be my best role model.
4. After going through the cases, do you feel you should change your attitude towards the
application of reflection in your practice? Explain.
Yes, I must work on to improve the all types and level reflection to deepen my own
understanding and to improve my teaching competence as well. As long as I stay in academic it
is not option rather it is obligation to change my attitude in line with application of reflection
practices.

Reflective Activity 9 - P. 27
1. Is diversity a problem or an opportunity for students learning? Yes/No, Why?
In my opinion diversity is an opportunity for student learning. Because since different individual

information is different. They have different talent in doing certain tasks. If diversity managed
well there sharing of knowledge and skill among different individual.

2. Discuss the implications of each learning theory for classroom teaching and learning.
Learning theories are an organized set of principles explain how individuals acquire, retain and
recall knowledge. By studying different theory, it is possible to understand how learning occur.
For instant behavioral theory assume that environment play major role in an individual learning
process. So as a teacher we need to create relevance stimuli so that student produce response. If
the response is positive it has to be reinforced by using different technique. If we take cognitive
theory, their assumption that the individual learning level is depend on his/her mind which is
internal. This implies that there is different among student with regard to level their
understanding particular issue. The factor is perceptual process of an individual is different. So
as teacher we need to understand the capacity of our students to treat and help them accordingly.
3. Consult a reference on another learning theory such as the theory of Observational Learning
and describe its importance in teaching and learning. Observational learning theory advocate
that behavior can be formed by imitating others behavior. As a teacher we need to model for our

students?
O It can’t be surely said that students have been fully engaged in all activities in the class.
This is caused by the presence of the fact that there are other constraints like time, lack of
student’s full engagement in activities which they are given, and others were the
dominant one.
Was there a range of activities? Were they appropriate?
O There were activities that have been given to students and at the same time they are
appropriate, but dominantly what have been observed is that they lack a motivation to be
equally engaged and perform activities.
