Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS)

The AFLS is an assessment devised by Dr. Mueller and Dr. Partington in 2012. It is an

assessment, skills tracking system, and curriculum guide for the development of skills needed for

achieving independence (AFLS, 2018). This assessment can be used on individuals with autism

spectrum disorder (ASD) and/ or other developmental disabilities. The AFLS is a criterion-

referenced assessment that is designed to be used from early elementary through adulthood

(AFLS, 2018). There are 6 assessment protocols: the basic living skills, home skills, community

participation, school skills, independent living, and vocational skills. The complete AFLS cover

more than 1900 useful daily living skills in 66 functional skill areas. The main goal of the AFLS

is to help learner gain the skills and confidence they need for functional living, so I would say it

does provide with a goal and curriculum. There are also guides that contain task analyses,

teaching suggestions, and prompting strategies.
