BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

In todays generation, technology has become an integral part of our lives. Most of

the people have relied on gadgets a lot, that’s why technology continues its rapid development.

This research work was aimed at finding out the effect of using mobile phones on learning of

Senior High School Students of MVTS. A mobile phone is one of the most rapidly growing new

technologies in the world, and most of the users of mobile phones are teenagers. They become

addicted on using mobile phones and It affects their study. The use of mobile phones constituted

a distraction to students and have negatively effectively affected their learning. Mobile phones

can be helpful tools for study but it can also be a hurtful source of distraction depending on the

attitude and use pattern of a student. Majority of the students keep bringing mobile phones to

school for communication and research, but we believe that the students are unable to have

adequate control over their use since they cause many distractions to them in pursuing their

study. The usage of mobile phones among Senior High School Students need to be controlled, to

lessen their addiction on using mobile phones especially during class hours so that they can focus

on their learnings.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This study aims to explore whether the use of mobile phones in class has a positive or

negative effect on the students' academic achievement and learning outcomes.

Specially, this seeks answers to the following Questions.

1.What is the impact of mobile phone use on the academic performance of senior high school

students in MVTS?

2.How does the frequency and duration of mobile phone use affect the cognitive processes and

learning outcomes of senior high school students in MVTS?

3.What are the perceived benefits and drawbacks of using mobile phones for educational

purposes among senior high school students in MVTS?

4.What are the factors that influence the decision to use or not use mobile phones for learning

among senior high school students in MVTS?

5.How can the use of mobile phones be optimized to enhance the learning experience and

academic achievement of senior high school students in MVTS?

HYPOTHESES:

Based upon the objectives of research the researcher has mentioned the hypotheses as under

1. During the last few years tendency of mobile phone addiction has been increased.

2. Mobile phone have affected the academic performance of students in a negative way.

3. The level of penetration of mobile phones is very high in the lives of youngsters.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

Academic performance refers to how students deal with their studies and how they

complete different assignments given to them by their teachers. A number of researches and

studies have been conducted in different regions of the world and the results have proved that

there is a relationship between student’s social media usage and their academic performance. The

continuous use of social media distracts the students from their studies and has the potential of

affecting their academic performance. The rampant use of social networking, texting and

chatting on Mobile Phones result in lower grades and poor academic performance of students.

The researches have proved that some students have the habit of keeping their MobilePhones on

during classes and studies, even in the library there by Aoki and Downes (2004) focused on the

behavioral and psychological aspects of cell Phone usage among the College students.

They tried to find the reasons behind why a technology is adopted in a particular way.

They identified several attitudinal factors based on the exploratory study including, necessity in

modern times, cost efficiency when compared to landline Phone, safety or security, and

dependence. The biggest challenge faced by the teachers during class hours is to control the

Mobile Phone usage by the students but the use of this device seems uncontrollable among

students which leads to distractions. In response to the question asking the purpose for using cell

Phone in class room, the respondents revealed that they send SMS in classrooms in the top order

of priority and read SMS received. They tend to also answer a voice call and make a voice call as

well from the class room. (Sundari, 2015).

In this era of Information & Technology, the most of the things or work we do is online.

But there are some positive effects of Mobile Phone usage on the academic performance of
students as this device has also helped to increase the level of quality education. Some

educational institutes encourages the students to bring their Mobile Phones with them. John

Monash Science School in Melbourne encourages students to bring their smartphones to lessons

as a learning device.(Eysenbach, 2014). Internet enabled Mobile Phones helped the students to

get the study material online but the Students easily get tempted to use the various social media

platforms when trying to obtain learning materials online. In most cases, the students end up

spending almost all their times on the social media and forget about the course materials they

originally intended to look for. (Bedassa,2014). Mobile Phone gives room to blending student’s

roles with other roles thus distracting and disrupting the students’ academic work. (Soyemi,

2015)As Mobile Phone use has expanded, so people or researchers or parents are also concerned

about the overuse of the technology. A major issue has been multitasking: texting while

attending a class lecture or business meeting; talking on the Phone while sitting at a restaurant

with a friend; texting while crossing the street; talking or texting while driving. Some situations

violate traditional norms of social behavior; others become safety issues (Baron, 2010).
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:

•Students can have access to the tools that expand their learning without interruption.

•Provides students the opportunity to take control of their education and develop a sense of

ownership.

•Gives students the choice to learn through mediums they are most comfortable with and thereby

enhance the learning journey altogether.

•Enabling students to customize the transfer of and access to information in order to build on

their skills and knowledge and to meet their own educational goals.

•Explore new things in an enjoyable manner rather than going through whole books to find the

desired information.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION:

This study is aimed at identifying the effects of using phones on the learning of the senior

high school student of molave vocation technical school. This study limited only to senior high

school in MVTS. It will be conducted inside the school premises.

This study considers every aspects of students personal information that has impact on

their academic performances such as they become addicted on using mobile phones and it affects

study. To achieve this objective, the researcher will conduct a survey of students at MVTS. The

results of this research are analyze through descriptive statics analysis. The findings of this study

will help researchers to understand how different factors influence students academic

performance. and this study focuses on the current senior high school.
