CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Since 2008, smartphone application distribution rate has increased and
there are hundreds of applications available today for user's consumption. While
some apps are used for entertainment and socializing purpose, others are used
for reading current health information and making online purchases.
Today a mobile phone is more than just a device that is use to make phone
calls. One more usage of it is entertainment and social media. Many people can't
live without it, because it is a source of all kinds of connectivity and fun. Mobile
phone helped the people in different ways, but some negative effects are also
there. This current study indicates that when children play games with mobile
phones, it has a significant negative effect for social interaction and self-control,
which emphasizes the importance of parent's supervision on the purpose of
mobile phone use by children.
In some cases, Mobile Phone use has become an addiction and people
remain stuck to their working hours because of it. Students had a decrease in
academic performance because of the more time spend on mobile phone. This
study aims to determine the impact of mobile phone to the academic performance
of students to know if it is positive or negative.
Statement of the problem
This study aimed to determine the impact of mobile phones to the academic
performance of students for S.Y 2022-2023.
This study sought to answer the following questions:
1. To what extent is the socio-demographic profile of students in terms of:
a. Age
b. gender
c. time spend of phone in a day(hrs)
2. To what extent is the level of impact of mobile phone use on learning?
3. To what extent is the level of positive effects of mobile phone on learning
achievements?
4. To what extent is the level of negative effects of mobile phone on learning
achievements?
5. To what extent is the cell phone application usage while studying?
Hypothesis of the Study
There is no significant difference on the impact of mobile phone to the
academic performance of students.
Significance of the Study
The findings of this this study was beneficial to the following:
Students. The students are the most benefited to this study as they will gain a
proper knowledge on the effects of mobile phones in their academic performance.
As they will be enlightened to know the truth.
Teachers. The teachers are called as our second parents. They will be able to
learn the effects of mobile phones in the academic performance of the students.
By this they will be enlightened on how to control, discipline and teach the
students.
School Administration. The school administration will learn and will use their
learnings to be able to create a rule in school to help students use mobile phones
as an instrument in their study.
Scope and Delimitation
This study focused only to determine the impact of mobile phone to the
academic performance of students. The respondents of the study were the grade
11 and 12 SHS students of Datu Sailila National High School for the S.Y 2022-
2023.
Theoretical framework
In 1947 AT&T Bell Laboratories engineer W.Rae Young and Douglas H.Ring
showed that more mobile users could be added by breaking down a large area
into many smaller cells, but that required more frequency coverage than was then
available. However, on 1968 the U.S Federal Communication Commission(FCC)
asked AT&T for a plan for employing a little-used portion of the UHF( Ultrahigh
Frequency) television band. AT&T proposed a cellular architecture to expand its
car-phone services.

mobile phone and Academic performance.
Definition of Terms
Mobile Phone - this is often also called " cellular phone". It is a device mainly used
for a voice call.
Academic performance - is the measurement of students achievement across
various academic subjects.
Impact - having a strong effect on someone or something.
Learning - a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience
and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning.
Education - is both the act of teaching knowledge to others and the act of
receiving knowledge from someone else.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The role of smartphone and mobile technologies in education must not be
ignored (Tikoria and Agariya, 2017). Academic learning is now innovative as a
result of smartphone and other media in promoting and advancing 21st century
needed skills and knowledge (Tulenko & Bailey, 2013); (Emerson & Berge, 2018).
Students have experiences of digital surroundings in a tactile and personal
manner, which is brought about by some mobile devices, including tablets and
smartphones (Cabo, 2012). According to kinsella(2009), the challenge of
communication kn lecture halls with students is solved due to the use of
smartphones. Mokoena(2012) states that group project and/or work given to the
students by their lectures are easily and convenient carried out with the aid of
smartphones. Form different perspectives, people try to embrace the use of
smartphones because it is no longer use as communication tools (calls and text
messages) only, but also tools for people's social and work lives and possibly a
potential instruments in their academic live(Cano,2012).
According to Gowthami amd Venkatakrishna Kumar(2016), they argue
that the use of the internet is now a routine habit for students, as well as a
medium that is used by students to search for information at anytime and
anywhere. Smartphones and mobile technologies make access, exchange and
mobility of information easier (Kent,2016). Some students can "switch" their focus
between the smartphone as a form of entertainment device and at the same time,
a learning platform (Barnwell,2016). Additionally, smartphones could prove to be
very important in the sense that it gives children, or in this case, students from
different kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds, the same opportunity to access
learning materials(Digital-age information). Some schools have decided to restrict
the use of smartphones in classes or during lectures; the reason being that
enables the students to cheat during their examination and/or test (Buck et
al.,2013). The easy internet access on smartphones enables students to easily
look up their examination and/or tests questions online.
There are negative impacts of social networks on the academic
performance of students(Rouis et al.,2011). According to Rouis, Limayem, and
Salehi-Sangari (2011), smartphones equip students with access to internet
connections, and this makes them feel the need sometimes to text their friends in
class. In this study, the impact of mobile phone to the academic performance of
students will be determined later in the study.Mobile phone help in academic of
students. They help in providing quick access to technology and information to
students. There are several educational application that you can use on
phone.Globally, there has been a growing trend of using mobile phones for
educational purposes, and many groups, especially teachers and students, use
these devices for sharing information, consulting dictionaries and thesauri. They
have been portrayed as one of the applications and as one of the application for
teaching and learning in which it is portrayed as new opportunity for the ICT use in
education (Lepp et al., 2015).
Gore (2010) According to the research and data analyzed through the
Chi-Square, it was calculated to be .18. This value did not exceed the .05 level of
significance. Means that her research rejects the statement that using cell phones
as a learning tool will positively affect classroom grade.
Junco (2012) found that 53% of undergraduate students at a university
reported text messaging during class. And also students using cell phones during
class are experiencing negative side effects with their academic achievement.
Debate.org (2017) surveys of should students allowed to use cellphones
in school and 72% agreed as they says that mobile phones are good for
education. 28% dis-agreed as a teacher says that students might play during the
session and they can use it to cheat.
Freed(2017) He finds out that students are distracted in learning when
they are using mobilephones, he also states that there’s an increased of students
that are cyberbullied at school.
Chen and Tzeng (2010) found that among heavy Internet users
information seeking was associated with better academic performance, while
video game playing was associated with lower levels of academic performance.
Several recent studies have identified a negative relationship between social-
networking site use (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, Twitter) and academic
performance
Gardiner (2016) He states that cellphone addiction in no joke as students
became more creative in using it text in their laps, text in their notebooks, text
inside their pockets, take pictures while teacher are writing on the board, went to
C.R and find out the answers on quizzes through surfing the internet. Students
also use their cellphones 24/7 as all of his result will lead to the breakdown of their
academic performance and maybe their future.
Koziol (2015) ban mobile phones to help underperforming students
indicates stricter rules around phone use may contribute to better grades
particularly for under performing students banning mobile phones in school
resulted in 14.23 percent improvement in test scores for low-achieving students,
and a 6.41 percent improvement overall in the schools that had introduced a ban
