Problem and it’s Backgrounds

Introduction

Over the years technology has been evolving continuously. People now rely heavily on

gadgets in our daily lives. In terms of communication, information access, entertainment,

education, health, and transportation, it improves our lives. It has been useful to

humankind in many ways and it contributed to several advancements making our life

easier and enjoyable. The advancement of technology has led to the creation of brand-

new modern technology like cellphones, high-end laptops and others.

In today’s modern world, adults and kids are also overly reliant on technology devices,

whether they be TVs, smartphones, laptops, or tablets, etc. According to Laricchia (2023)

the number of mobile devices operating worldwide stood at almost 16.8 billion. In 2023 and

it increased from just over 15.96 billion in the previous year 2022. Cellphones or wireless

devices are at the top of the list and are the most popular electronic gadget worldwide and

also the top gadgets that use in learning of the students in 2023, pretty much all (96.8%)

consumers own a mobile phone . According to Kemp (2023) Meanwhile, in the Philippines,

the total of mobile phone users has a total of 168.3 million.

Many people use technology because of its great help, especially in education .

Technology have become essential tool in education. With the help of gadgets teachers
and students are now able to access and share information, work together on projects, and

engage with educational material in innovative ways. Students have an access to the

technology can expand their knowledge or broadens their mind more. They can look to

interactive lessons, educational videos, app and search engines by electric gadgets. You

can even participate in online seminars from inside of your own house thanks to

technological advancements. Gadgets may be used for enjoyment and stress reliever

aside from the field of education.

Student study habits and the way their learning have drastically changed .On the other

hand, study habits are considered how a student organizes his or her private reading,

outside of lecture hours, in order to become an expert on a particular topic ,the way that

the students learning has changed as a result of technology. Now that students may

access almost all material that is accessible to everyone from the comfort of their homes

through the Internet, the days of slaving over books in the library and taking notes on

paper are long gone. There is no need for them to travel or even visit a library. The Internet

has scanned many books, so all you need to do is search and click to access the results.

However, excessive gadget usage can also lead to several challenges that adversely

affect students’ study habits. Multimedia devices like the iPad, Android phone, and PC,

where almost all of games can be downloaded, have monopolized a lot of students’

attention and free time at home and in school. .One significant concern is the potential

distraction caused by gadgets, but it can also serve as a distraction from developing solid

study habits. Just the presence of a smartphone, according to studies, can affect cognitive

function when attempting to accomplish their other tasks. Social media platforms, addictive

games, and endless entertainment options can easily divert students’ attention away from

their studies, leading to decreased focus and productivity. Constant notifications, alerts,
and the allure of instant gratification can create a constant battle for attention, ultimately

hindering students’ ability to concentrate and retain information effectively

Considering the potential risks associated with excessive gadget usage, it is crucial for

educators, parents, and students themselves to be aware of the balance needed in

incorporating technology into the academic environment. By understanding the potential

consequences and implementing strategies to promote responsible gadget usage,

educators and parents can help senior high school students effectively manage their digital

lives while maintaining a focus on their studies.

Nowadays, not only the study habits of the students who use excessively gadgets that are

being affected but also lowered human interaction it changes how they interact with their

classmates and teachers. The presence of these electronic devices has an important

influence on the quality of our interactions with those around us. Children and students

who play violent video games for a long amount of time tend to be more aggressive. Such

youngsters are more likely to confront their instructors, peers, and their relatives

There are several devices that simplify our living, and this technology enhances the

efficiency of students. While there are some benefits to these devices, there are also

disadvantages as well. That is students become addicted to gaming, texting, or talking on

the phone or online, which interferes with their learning and causes them to skip their

studies at home. At this point, it is up to the students to decide whether they develop bad

study habits and a lazy attitude or learn useful skills. Additionally, it causes students to

lose sight of their basic learning because they completely rely on the internet instead of

books and ask instructors for .

This study shows how excessive use of gadgets can affect the study habits of Senior High

school students at Victory Elijah Christian College (VECC) As the title said. While gadgets

and technology undoubtedly bring numerous benefits to education, their excessive use can

have a detrimental impact on the study habits and academic performance of senior high

school students. Senior high school is a crucial stage in a student’s academic journey as

they prepare for higher education and future careers. The irresponsible gadget usage can

have a poor mental or physical health and poor study habits.Technology can have

negative impact to their focus on their educational journey. We must find ways to reduce

the negative impact of these electronic devices and how to minimize the use of gadgets by

students.
Statement of the problem.

This study is aim to determine “The effect of Excessive use of Gadgets in the Study of

Senior High School Students of Elijah Christian College for the effects of Excessive Use

of Gadgets in The Study Habits of The Students”.

1. What are the effects of excessive use of in the study habits of the students ?

2. What are the different types of gadgets that students use the most in their study?

3. How to minimize the excessive use of gadgets?

Theoretical Framework

The widespread use of gadgets in today’s society has significantly impacted the lives of

individuals, particularly among the younger generation. Senior high school students are

increasingly exposed to and reliant on gadgets for various purposes, including

communication, entertainment, and education. This research aims to determine the

effect of excessive use of gadgets on the study habits of senior high school students by

focusing on two key theories: Self-Regulation Theory and Technostress.

Self-Regulation Theory

Zimmerman is an educational researcher at the City University of New York and

Zimmermann’s self-regulation theory suggests that people possess the capability to

manage their cognitive processes, affective responses, and actions to attain their

objectives. The way students utilize their gadgets is heavily influenced by their ability to

self-regulate, making it a vital factor in this study. Overusing electronic devices can

hinder students’ self-discipline, resulting in adverse effects on their educational routines.

People who are able to govern themselves effectively in learning processes possess

certain traits, as detailed by Zimmerman (2000), including setting defined objectives,

creating approaches to achieve those objectives, and keeping track of their own

advancement. They possess the ability to adapt and modify their approaches through
self-evaluation and response from others. Overuse of electronic devices can disrupt

these procedures, as students can be easily sidetracked by the never-ending flow of

notifications and stimuli from their gadgets. As a consequence, there may be a decline

in their capacity to concentrate on educational responsibilities, efficiently handle their

schedule, and sustain their drive for acquiring knowledge. In addition, regulating oneself

requires the utilization of cognitive approaches like organizing, supervising, and

assessing one’s own acquisition of knowledge (Zimmerman, 2000).

Frequent use of electronic devices among students can interfere with their ability to think

about their own thinking, as they may prioritize responding to device notifications instead

of deliberately pursuing their goals. An outcome of this could be a reduction in their

capacity to plan and coordinate their study sessions, keep track of their understanding

and progress, and assess the efficacy of their learning approaches. As a result, the

frequent utilization of electronic devices by students can impede the development and

sustenance of efficient learning routines, ultimately leading to a detrimental effect on

their study habits or academic performance.

Technostress

The term Technostress was first coined by Brod in 1984 and it pertains to the stress that

people may undergo as a result of the persistent exposure to and utilization of

technology. The students who use gadgets excessively may develop Technostress that

could have an adverse effect on their mental health and, as a result, their study habits.

Brod is a Visiting Clinical Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and a partner at Cleary

Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, and he published the book “ Technostress ” And

according to brod there are multiple factors that play a role in causing Technostress,

such as excessive information, fast-moving technological advancements, and the

intrusion into individual privacy. The study suggests that if students overuse their
electronic devices, they could become inundated with an excessive amount of

information, which may hinder their ability to properly comprehend and retain academic

material. Furthermore, the perpetual requirement to stay current with modern technology

might induce a feeling of stress and unease among pupils, amplifying their level of

strain.

Technostress can exhibit itself in various physical symptoms such as eyestrain,

headaches, and trouble sleeping (Brod 1984). These symptoms. Ultimately hinder the

student’s focus and performance in their study habits. Additionally, the uninterrupted

access provided by technology devices may blur the distinction between students’

academic and personal realms, resulting in a difficulty to detach from technology and

establish a sustainable balance between work and leisure..

Technostress could have adverse effects on students’ study habits by hindering their

focus on studies, hindering their time management skills, and disrupting their work-life

equilibrium.

This theoretical framework provides a foundation for understanding the potential

consequences of excessive use of gadgets on the study habits of senior high school

students at victory Elijah Christian College. By examining the relationships between

excessive use of gadgets, self-regulation and Technostress, this research aims to

contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of technology on students.

According to Aprianti etc.(2022) The following findings can be obtained by researchers.

Initially, the usage of students utilize gadgets for more than just communication; there

are also some pupils utilize technology to access social media, play games, and there

are some of them would rather play games than study. Even some of them Utilize

technology for amusement, but they also use it for academic tasks. The Students who

use devices both frequently and infrequently fall into these categories.

Based on Aprianti students not also using their gadgets in the study but also to their

happiness like playing games online connecting to the social media ,that some of them

not doing Their schoolwork because they chose to play games and use social media

that lead them to distraction that’s why students have a poor study habit and learning

skill and the students who use excessively gadgets are the one that have a problem

with this such conversations.

According to Akter and Mannan (2021) The Use of technological gadgets has rapidly

been increasing among adolescents which may result in health issues and technology

addiction.
This study focusses on the prevalence of usage of technological gadgets and health-

related complications among secondary school going children of Bangladesh the

children were asked questions relating to their access to electronic gadgets, time spent

on outdoor activities.

After effect of the usage a binary logistic regression model was adapted considering

time spent on gadgets as an independent variable and health problems(physical and

mental) as the dependent variable.

Based on akter excessive use or gadgets among the adolescent may affect their health,

and this study focused on electronics gadgets and the health of students.Because study

are more spending time in gadgets more than doing their homework and outside

activities

According to Rahayu and Dewi (2023), a society that relies heavily on technology,

especially cellphones, for everyday chores. This is due to the fact that technology, in the

form of smartphones and applications, is available everywhere. Children of the Z

generation are also getting more and more dependent on technology, demonstrating

that the trend is not just present in adults. In order to prevent children from using

gadgets excessively, this study emphasizes the need of parents and teachers having a

solid awareness of technology usage, digital content and information dissemination, and

the hazards and changes brought about by advances in technology. However, many

parents appear to be unaware of the numerous detrimental implications that this

excessive usage of technology by kids may have, such as screen addiction, behavioral

problems, early development, and more.

Based on Anizar Rahayu and dewi technology device has been used in the new

generation not only in the adults. However, this excessive use of gadgets by children

has several negative effects in this generation who use gadgets and because students
used gadgets in learning the parents became unaware of the demitrinal effects of

Gadgets .So some parents let their children use gadgets and because of that students

using gadgets excessively.

According to Surat and Yusop (2021)A gadget is a significant tool that has become a

must for people everywhere. Previously, the use of gadgets was largely only available

to professionals, but today, usage is widespread, especially among Generation Z.Due

to their widespread availability and frequent low pricing, more and more gadget users

are able to purchase these devices. This study is anticipated to improve mental wellness

and act as a guide for this population to lessen their addiction on electronic devices.

Based on Surat and Yusop the development of modern technology is now widespread

to the Generations z that because of the we can see almost adolescent have their own

smartphone and they’re becoming addicted to the electronic devices and the study is

about how to lessen the additiction and usage of the electronic devices to adolescent .

Desmond Okocha Onyemechi is associate Professor, Department of Mass

Communication, from Nigeria and Terhile Agaku a lecturer, Department of Mass

Communication of Bingham University. According to onyemechu & agaku

(2023)Technology is advancing quickly and has impacted almost every aspect of

society. Digital technology is becoming more and more ingrained in adolescents’ daily

According to Balistoy and Murcia (2019)Although gadgets are incredibly helpful, they

can sometimes have drawbacks. Frequent use of these devices may cause students to

lose interest in learning, which frequently results in low grades. However, it is

impossible to deny that gadgets make our lives more pleasurable and comfortable.

Whoever possesses one of these pieces of technology is happy with it and tends to

spend their time online or playing video games, unconcerned with whether or not their

grades have deteriorated. Our ability to be active, communicate with people, and mental

health can all be negatively impacted by addictive technology. People frequently use

these devices excessively, which can lead to eye fatigue or other health problems. If we

don’t use gadgets responsibly, they could hurt us.

Based on Axl Balistoy and Francis Murcia Gadgets are incredibly helpful to make our

lives easier. But according to them using gadgets excessively can cause a health

problems and they could hurt us.

According to Pinon etc.(2019) The role of gadgets in today’s world is crucial. It is

incredibly useful and makes everyone’s work easier. It is always evolving and improving

over time. Gadgets have had a significant impact on everyone, especially on lifestyle
and study habits. We have become so accustomed to them that it is quite challenging

for us to complete projects or concentrate on our studies without them

Based to Chris Pinon and Liezel Planas gadgets have impact on everyone specially on

lifestyle and study habits that challenging us to concentrate to studies without them.It

said that we need to do our school works without the help of any devices for us to

become a dependent students.

According to Antigo(2021) The understudies generally utilized different electronic

contraption

Principally versatile/cellphones and PC. The utilization of electronic devices in all

actuality do meaningfully affect understudies’ family relationship, but rare on

understudies’ medical issue and furthermore with understudies’ review propensities

separately. In addition, this study reveals that age, gender, and grade levels of students

have no significant impact on the use of electronic devices in relation to family

relationships or study habits. However, the effects of using electronic devices on health

conditions vary significantly depending on the grade level of the students. Additionally, it

was likewise observed that there is irrelevant connection between the scholastic

execution and the degree of impacts on the utilization of electronic devices as to family

connections, wellbeing and study propensities. In this study, parents are encouraged to

keep an eye on how their kids use electronic devices; that the students should use the

electronic device for educational purposes and occasionally for leisure purposes.

Based to Cristina Antigo and Marie De Guzman electronic devices had a impact to our

studies that why parents are the responsible to encourage and keep an eye on how

their kids use electronic devices for their study. But sometimes students need to control

themselves in using gadgets .

According to Sia and Tabelon (2022) Some people in the modern era struggle to

envision life without electronics. Every student now owns at least one device, which

they can use throughout the day and carry wherever they go depending on its purpose.

People would occasionally find ways to use gadgets, such as in school, at work, and

many other places. We overuse it and depend on it for the majority of our lives since it

is so easy and effective. Although gadgets have made many great contributions to our

society, overspending on them could harm our physical and mental health. Gadgets are

one of the many things that have their opposites.

Based on Mikee Sia and Kryy Tabelon Students has a gadgets that can use anytime

but by using gadgets excessively can affect our physical and mental health . Gadgets

can help a lot of people specially students but gadgets have a negative impact in

everyone.

According to Adan and Villanueva etc.(2021)The reason why students spend ten hours

a day using their gadgets is because they spend much of that time playing mobile

games and utilizing social media apps, which causes them to lose track of time.

Additionally, because students take online classes and use technology for schoolwork,

they occasionally are unable to resist spending a lot of time in front of the computer.

Various health issues are being experienced by students as a result of their use of

technology. They are experiencing headaches, back pain, impaired vision, and eye

strain. They also notice certain changes in their behavior, such as feeling more
