01 Introduction
Roles of IT in English Language Teaching
Why do we need IT in ELT?
“Technology will never replace teachers,
but a teacher who cannot teach with technology
will be replaced by another one who can.”

Importance of IT in English Language Teaching
Enhanced student engagement and motivation: technology
can make language learning more interactive, dynamic, and
appealing to students (Barrs & Smith, 2018).
Increased access to authentic resources and materials:
technology enables students to access real-world content,
multimedia resources, and authentic language use beyond
traditional textbooks (Levy, 2009).
Opportunities for personalized and adaptive learning:
technology can facilitate individualized instruction, adaptive
feedback, and personalized learning paths, catering to the
unique needs of each learner (Plass et al., 2015).

Basic Skills & Tools: Let’s Test yourself!
● TRUE or FALSE: If you're working in a document and use
"Undo," but then realize you didn’t want to undo your most
recent change, "Redo" will restore it.
● You are attending a webinar on Zoom. There is a useful
presentation slide you want to capture and download for
later use. What will you do?

Why using the Internet in teaching?
• To find free resources?
• To search for authentic materials?
• To motivate students?
• To let students learn by doing things themselves?
• To make students feel like citizens of a global
classroom to practice communication on a global
level?

Information Skills
You may begin by asking the following questions:
1. Does the website offer anything extra that cannot be done in more traditional ways,
e.g. with pencil and paper or chalk and talk?
2. Do you intend to use the website for whole-class teaching, e.g. using a computer plus
projector and wall screen / interactive whiteboard?
3. Do you intend to use the website in a computer lab, i.e. where each learner works at
an individual computer?
4. How do you intend to integrate the website into your teaching?

Web-based tools: Gamification
Gamification is the integration of game elements and mechanics into
non-game contexts, such as education, to engage and motivate learners
(Dicheva et al., 2015).
It involves applying game design principles, such as points, badges,
leaderboards, challenges, and rewards, to make learning more interactive,
enjoyable, and immersive (Landers & Landers, 2014).
Gamification in language learning aims to create a game-like environment
where learners can actively participate, practice language skills, receive
feedback, and track their progress (Hamari et al., 2014).

Web-based tools: Communication Tools
• Video conferencing platforms: Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams
enable real-time communication and collaboration among learners
(Nordrum, 2020).
• Discussion forums and message boards: Moodle or Edmodo allow learners
to engage in asynchronous discussions, share ideas, and collaborate on
projects (Zhang & Fulford, 2019).
• Social media and language exchange platforms: Facebook groups, Twitter,
or language exchange apps (e.g., HelloTalk) to connect learners with native
speakers for language practice and cultural exchange (Lamy & Zourou,
2013).
