Canvas Icon Reference Guide for Parents

Global Navigation Icons

CANVAS ICON DESCRIPTION

Account: You will be able to find and make adjustments to your


notifications and overall Canvas settings for your parent account.

Dashboard: is your default page where you can see your


courses.

Courses: where you can see the list of courses that your student
is enrolled in.

Calendar: where you can keep track of assignments or events


that are upcoming. Each course will appear with it’s own color.

Inbox: messaging tool used to communicate with your student’s


teachers

History: reflects updates that have been made to course.

Reference: Canvas Basics Guide


Studio: a communication tool that allows students to create
content with video and audio.

Help: where you will find the Canvas Guide resources to


common questions, and report a Canvas problem*

Common Icons Found in Modules


Also found in Calendar, Gradebook and To Do List

Page/Document: When you see this icon within a module, you


have entered a page that you can type text, embed information,
and/or attach files.

Attachment: icon that allows you to attach media

Assignment: Indicates assignments that students will need to


complete. There are four ways for students to submit work: text
entry, website url, media recording, and file upload.

Quiz: Indicates that a student has been assigned a quiz.

Discussion: Indicates that there will be interactive


communication between two or more people.

Hyperlink: indicates that you will be redirected to an external


link.

Weekly icon: notifications for course reminders weekly.

Daily icon: notifications for course reminders daily.


Notifications on icon: turn notifications ON by clicking this icon.

Notifications off icon: turn notifications OFF by clicking this


icon.

Announcement: appears in the front cover of your course when


there is an announcement.

Folder: The symbol means there are files in the student course.

Pdf attachment: this is a downloadable file
