Technology has always been a useful tool in our work spaces, for public and private
education, and even in our personal lives. Over the years it has become more
advanced, and with it, us more attached. Whilst it brings certain benefits, it can also
work against us in the form of addiction. It is a resource we need at all times, but tend to
become obsessed with, and it effects our mental, social and even physical health. The
most vulnerable people in our society, children and teens, are affected the most. We’ll
be taking a look at how screen time affects their mental capacity, and the effects social
media has on teens.
Since we use our devices for everything, our screentime tends to be pretty high, which
can lead to certain problems. One issue is addiction, where a few minutes turn into a
few hours and we end up spending most of the time we spend awake on our phones. It
does not cause the physical harm that a drug, or drinking addiction would cause, but it
does affect our mental health. Spending too much time can lead to depression, anxiety,
and a shortened attention span. We can also develop unhealthy habits because of it,
since we can prioritize our devices over needs. One of the biggest things we can do to
help, is investing time in hobbies and interests to keep us mentally stimulated. In finding
other ways to spend our time, we slowly unlearn any detrimental patterns.
Another thing we spend time on while using our phones is social media. Sometimes we
use it for work, and other times for personal stuff. As productive and useful social media
can be, it usually has some negative impact on our lives. Whether we get addicted, or
stop using it for beneficially reasons, here are some impacts it has. For starters, it is a
perfect place to over-compare yourself. Whether its about personal goals, or
achievements, we tend to work ourselves up about what we see on screen. Doing this
can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and an overall sense of loss. This situation becomes
worse when we add to the equation that the people who are on it are teenagers. People
who are just beginning their lives, and are in vulnerable headspace. That is why teens,
and adults alike, need to be careful when using social media, and should limit their use
when possible.
Phones and devices can be a useful tool when needed, and have given us great
advances in certain areas, but be cautious. As many benefits as it has, there are still
downsides to it, that we as humans, are affected by. Keep that in mind the next time you
pick up your phone, and apply it. Reduce your usage, invest in extracurricular activities
to keep you stimulated and be mindful of how you spend your time on social media.
