What I Know

The earth’s surface is constantly changing. Natural processes that

shape the earth’s surface is caused by weathering and soil erosion. These
work together to change the environment. In nature, large things get broken
down into smaller things over time. It brought various effects on living things
and to the environment. What are the effects brought about by weathering
and soil erosion on living things and the environment? Let us see what you’ve
got!

The Effect of Weathering
Lesson
and Soil Erosion on
1 Living Things and the
Environment
Every natural process here on earth, like soil erosion and weathering,
affects both living and nonliving things. Soil erosion and weathering do not
only shape earth’s landforms, it also affects the ecosystem especially if it
happens abruptly. Human activities also aggravate the effect of soil erosion
and weathering in the environment (Lopez A, 2016).

What’s In

Do you recall the 2018 killer landslide caused by massive soil erosion?
The residents in Sitio Sindulan Naga City, Southern Cebu marked ground
zero on the 2018 killer landslide that claimed the lives of many people and
buried their houses and properties. The authorities blamed it on lack of trees
due to illegal logging, mining and quarrying. Naga landslide victims’ road to
recovery still a long shot with ongoing pandemic.
The effects of weathering and soil erosion can post harm to the living
things and the environment but it also has some benefits to both.
Find and circle the five highlighted words listed below in the word
search puzzle. Words appear up, down, forward, backward and diagonal.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Rocks: A rock is a naturally occurring mixture of one or more minerals.
Magma: a mixture of molten rock and other materials beneath the Earth’s
surface.
Igneous: Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of lava
or magma.
Sedimentary: Sedimentary rocks are formed from the deposition of mineral
or organic sediments
Metamorphic: Metamorphic rocks are created by the transformation of
existing rock through heat and pressure.

11
What is It

The poem conveys the effects of weathering and soil erosion in living
things and the environment.

Weathering and erosion work together to change the environment. In

nature, large things get broken down into smaller pieces over time. Boulders
become sand and mountains become hills.

The different agents of weathering and soil erosion include water,

temperature, wind or air, animals and human (Arradaza, 2016).

Weathering is what breaks down rocks and boulders and turns them
into tiny pieces called sediments (rocks that are as small as tiny particles that
are moved by water and wind). There is no movement in weathering.

Erosion is what moves the soil and tiny rocks that weathering leaves
behind. Erosion happens because of gravity pulling the soil downhill, or
because of strong weather like rain or wind (Lopez, 2016).

Effects of Weathering and Soil Erosion on Living Things

and the Environment
1. Shortage of food supply

The loss of topsoil results in lesser

harvest of farmers, poor quality of crops
and lesser income for farmers. If there is
less harvest, then there is food shortage
in the community. The food will be
expensive and so most people will be
malnourished and easily affected by
diseases (Valencia, 2018).
2. Mine Tailings
Another negative effect of soil erosion is
the prevalence of mine tailings. Mine
tailings are the mineral wastes or leftovers
after the mining process. Erosion brought
about by water can wash mine tailings to
nearby bodies of water and pollute them.
Polluted seas and rivers can affect aquatic

12
plants and animals, as well as the potable water supply of animals and human
(Tan, 2012).
3. Change of landform

Weathering and soil erosion

can change the different landforms.
As water seeps through a hill or a
mountain, soil may loosen and
landslide may occur changing the
shape of the landform. Some soil
particles may be carried into streams,
lakes and rivers. The transport of
sediments will lead to flooding of
lower areas in the community that
could cause loss of lives and damage
to properties (Catris, 2018).
4. Flooding and Siltation
Aside from food shortage
flooding will be a common occurrence
as there are no roots of plants to
absorb water. Soil erosion can also
damage fisheries and dam reservoirs,
as siltation happens at the lower
ground within the area. In siltation,
the soil sediments pile up and become
hard like rock that may prevent the
cycle of water in dams or fisheries
(Valencia, 2018).

What’s More

Activity 1. Analyze each item carefully. Draw a happy face  if the

situation shows a good effect of soil erosion and weathering and sad face 
if NOT. Draw your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. shaping of landforms
2. deposition of mine tailings
3. formation of soil
4. removal of soil
5. clogging of irrigation canals
6. decrease in food production
7. pollution of water
8. inability of soil to hold water
9. loss of lives and damage to properties
10. large masses becoming wonders of nature

Activity 2. How are farmers keeping us fed amidst the global crisis of
COVID 19 pandemic? How would we feel if we are the farmers experiencing
hard times in the production of crops resulting to food shortage in the
community? Here is the story of two farmers during such situation. Answer
the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.

The Grains on Crisis

by Norayda R. Landicho

Nilo, who is a farmer, visited his friend who is also a farmer living
on a nearby village.

NILO: In this crucial times of pandemic, my heart is troubled because

our farm’s crop production decreased significantly. I am worried that it
will result to food shortage in our community.

14
MELCHOR: Nilo, my friend the fertility of the topsoil greatly affects
the yield of crops in our farm. Top soil is rich in nutrients, best in
planting crops, which is the reason why I yield more harvests and
produce healthy crops.

NILO: What causes the removal of top soil in our farm?

MELCHOR: Natural forces like wind and water cause the top soil to
erode from one place to another and get possibly deposited on
fisheries, streams or nearby farms. When farmers over plowing their
fields excessively, they also cause soil erosion and farm animals
cause soil erosion by overgrazing.

NILO: Thank you my friend, now I know why I yield less harvest.

MELCHOR: My friend Nilo, there are ways to avoid and manage soil
erosion. You can increase vegetation across the farm and their roots
meander down through the soil, and become like bars in a prison,
locking soil particles in place, making it hard for them to escape
and carried by water. Plants and trees act as natural wind breaker.
Trees planted across wind direction acts like a wall, cutting down
wind erosion. Terracing is an option, too. Erosion can be controlled
on sloped land where water runs down the slope by cutting the
steps or creating terraces. This way, a farmer’s field will have an
easier time holding water.

NILO: Thank you my friend, I’ am glad that my problem is solved

with your help.

MELCHOR: You’re always welcome my friend!

From then on, Nilo yielded more harvests and grew healthy
crops from his farm, and never did he experienced food shortage in
the community again. THE END!

Guide Questions:
1. What cause of the removal of topsoil in the farm?
2. What is the use of top soil on the farm?
3. What are the natural forces that cause soil erosion on farm?
4. Why Nilo’s heart is in troubled in this crucial time of pandemic?
5. How can you help prevent soil erosion?

15
Activity 3. Read the news clip below and answer the following
questions on a separate sheet of paper.

What are the Human Activities that Cause Soil Erosion?

by Norayda R. Landicho

Human activities on the earth’s surface, whether it is in the backyard

or down the park, certain human activities cause soil erosion. Human life has
been the number one cause of soil erosion dating back to the first millennium.
Agriculture and construction are the two ways in which humans cause soil
erosion. Construction when unnecessarily can be quite damaging to soil and
dirt. Agricultural causes of soil erosion happen when humans move the top
soil by over plowing and make it prone to erosion.

Grazing and deforestation are also human causes of soil erosion,

because human lifestyle is making the soil surface bare due to our complete
dependence on our natural resources like the forest for lumber and
mountains for mining. In the absence of forest cover and with frequent heavy
typhoon rains, soil erosion and landslides are induced.

As we see, we need to avoid and manage the harmful effects of soil

erosion. Let us start to plant more trees and grow more plants on the surface
instead of using pots. We need to increase vegetation of crops. Let us make a
more conscious effort to conserve the environment and save the earth to save
lives.

Guide Questions:

1. What are the human activities that cause soil erosion?

2. How does deforestation cause soil erosion and how do these affect our
environment?
3. How does agriculture cause soil erosion and how do these affect living
things?
4. How does construction cause soil erosion and how do these affect the
environment?
5. How can you show your concern to the environment and awareness
about the issues of soil erosion caused by human activities in your
community?
