Configuration of safety instructions

Configuration of safety instructions

Safety instructions indicate a personal health hazard. We distinguish three
different levels: Danger, warning and caution. All three safety instructions
are marked with the same warning symbol. The designation of the safety
instruction is shown beside the symbol. The safety instructions used are
described below.

Configuration of a safety instruction

A safety instruction may have the following components:
– Warning symbol and designation of the safety instruction (signal
word): Danger, warning or caution.
– Source and cause of the danger
– Consequences for the user due to non-observance of the safety in-
struction
– Required measures to be taken by the user to avoid possible conse-
quences
– A measure may cause an intermediate result.
– At the end of all measures, a final result may be caused.

Personal health hazard

DANGER
A »danger« indicates an imminent risk to life and limb.
Non-observance of this safety instruction when the described risk occurs
causes death or serious injuries.
Example: Electric shock due to high electric voltage.

WARNING
A »warning« indicates a possible risk to life and limb.
Non-observance of this safety instruction when the described risk occurs
may cause death or serious injuries.
Example: Risk of severe crushing of the body caused by heavy loads.

CAUTION
A »caution« indicates a personal health hazard.
Non-observance of this safety instruction when the described risk occurs
may cause slight to moderate injuries.
Example: Risk of minor crushing of the limbs caused by small loads.

Risk of material damage

If there is no personal health hazard, but the CMM or components may
get damaged, this is pointed out by the following notice.

61212-2731102 CALYPSO Preface 3

Configuration of safety instructions

This symbol refers to possible damage to the CMM.

Non-observance of this safety instruction when the event occurs may cause
damage to the CMM or one of its components.
Example: Collision of the ram with a workpiece.

Elements of the Simulation option

Elements of the Simulation option

Stylus simulation With the Simulation option, CALYPSO is able to display the location and
position of the currently used stylus in the CAD window during the CNC
run. In this way, you can conveniently trace on the screen which move-
ments the stylus is making in the CNC run.
If CALYPSO knows the corresponding dimensions, the probe, base plate,
rotary table, and the measuring range of the CMM can also be shown.
Stylus system creator To allow simulation of the stylus movement, CALYPSO requires a com-
plete geometry model of the stylus system and the associated styli. You
can use the Stylus System Creator to copy stylus systems and styli of cer-
tain manufacturers and supplement them using basic elements such as
cone, cylinder, sphere and cube.
Stylus Simulation and Stylus System Creator are also the requirement for
starting and processing measurement plans without a connected CMM.
Stylus changer rack tool- The stylus changer rack toolbox is used to create, position, configure and
box equip stylus changer rack models.
This is a prerequisite for also simulating the automatic stylus system
change in CALYPSO.

1-2 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus simulation

Stylus simulation
Measuring run control via stylus
simulation
When you activate the stylus simulation, not only the workpiece but also
the movement of the currently used stylus system are shown in the CAD
window during the CNC run.
You can conveniently trace the stylus system in the CNC run on the
screen. You see exactly which stylus is used and which movements and
rotations the stylus makes relative to the workpiece.
Further elements of the If CALYPSO knows the corresponding dimensions, the probe, base plate,
simulation rotary table, and the measuring range of the CMM can also be shown.
In this way, you have a completely new possibility to check the run. Any
weaknesses (risk of collision) in the measurement plan become visible and
can be corrected.

NOTICE
This option is particularly important for testing, for example, a measure-
ment plan created using the CALYPSO Planner away from the machine.

Properties of the simulation

CALYPSO always attempts to show the stylus system in the center of the
CAD window. The view is set at an angle of 40° to the shaft direction of
the stylus.
By selecting the run mode (single steps, permanent operation) and by
stopping and restarting the simulation, you simultaneously control the
stylus system display and CNC run.
In addition, you can set the different parameters of the simulation, such
as the number of tests, display of the track and the automatic collision
recognition.

Requirements for stylus simulation

Stylus system The stylus simulation is only possible if the dimensions and configuration
of the stylus system used in the measurement plan are known to CALYP-
SO. For this purpose, you must copy an appropriate SSC file to CALYPSO.
For loading, editing and saving of SSC files, you can use the Stylus System
Creator, an independent program supplied with CALYPSO (➤Stylus Sys-
tem Creator [⇨ 1‑6]).
CMM dimensions To enable display of additional features, make the corresponding entries
under Extras ® Settings ® CMM:

– Base plate and measuring range: Input of the dimensions on the Ma-
chine page.
– Rotary table: Input on the Rotary Table page.

Controlling the stylus simulation

If you have correctly “assembled” the stylus system used in the measure-
ment plan using the Stylus System Creator, you can simulate the move-
ments of the stylus system on the workpiece in the CAD window.
Here, you have various possibilities to control the run and display.
Activating the stylus sim- Activate the stylus simulation via Planner ® Stylus System Simu-
ulation lation. The Simulation window is displayed:

The icons have the following meanings:

Icon Function
You can use the Stop, Start and Step recorder keys to stop the
CNC run and thus the stylus simulation, to restart it or let it run in the
single-step mode.
You use the icons for Stylus and Stylus system to control the
extent of the display: With Stylus, only the currently used stylus is
displayed.
You use the icons for the display to control the display of probe, base
plate, rotary table and CMM.
It is also possible to display the entire CMM, the clearance
planes and the measuring range of the CMM.
With the slider, you control the accuracy of the collision observation.

By activating the Collision observation icon, the dialog box is

enlarged. CALYPSO records any collision and enters it in the list.
Records any crossing of the measuring range and enters it into the
collision list.

Stylus simulation

Icon Function
If you probe a very large workpiece, you can use the Follow sty-
lus icon to have the zoom window always follow the movements of
the stylus. Simultaneously, the workpiece is automatically rotated in
the CAD window in such way that you always see the stylus system
in front of the workpiece.
Opens the CMM Operation window which allows you to manually
control the CMM in the simulation mode in the CAD window in the
same way as with the control console.
If the Show navigation icon is activated, the path of the stylus
movement is marked as light traces in the CAD window.
Opens the Simulation Settings dialog box in which you can set the
transparency and the plot axes for Probe, Stylus, Bridge and
Base.
Opens the Modify CAD Model window with the Positioning tab
which you can use to position objects in the CAD window as desired.

Positioning the CAD model

By positioning the CAD model in CALYPSO, you can simulate the shifting
or rotation of a workpiece on the base plate. Unlike the rotation of the
view of the CAD model via the buttons of the CAD window, the CAD
model is rotated mathematically by the positioning.

NOTICE
The base plate or the rotary table must be shown in the CAD window
(Planner ® Show work area).
1 Rotate the CAD model in the CAD window so that you can click the
desired surface.
2 Select CAD ® Modify CAD Entities.
The Modify CAD Model window is opened.
3 Click the Positioning tab.
4 If necessary, enter the parameters for the translation and rotation of
the CAD model.
5 Select the procedure for mouse-controlled positioning, then click the
start and target points in the CAD model.
The CAD model is repositioned accordingly on the base plate.
To cancel positioning, click the Position button.

Stylus System Creator

Stylus System Creator

Basics about the stylus system creator
In order to allow simulation of the measuring run, CALYPSO requires a
complete geometry model of the stylus system and the associated styli.
This is the purpose of the Stylus System Creator.
The stylus system creator allows you to create, edit, and manage the stylus
system models in the form of SSC files. These files are then accessed by
CALYPSO to simulate the styli used.

Stylus system Import

CALYPSO
creator SSC files

NOTICE
From version 4.6, the Stylus System Creator is an independent program
that you open from CALYPSO. In future, it will be provided for other ZEISS
programs, too.
Up to version 4.4, CALYPSO contained an internal stylus system creator,
allowing to compose stylus systems from ready-made components and
own complements.
The new stylus system creator allows loading, editing and further proc-
essing of these “old” stylus models in CALYPSO.
The Stylus System Creator provides two types of components for assem-
bling stylus system models:
– Stylus and stylus system components in accordance with the product
catalogs from ZEISS and other manufacturers.
– Generic components. These are styli with changeable dimensions as
well as geometric standard objects such as cone, cylinder, sphere and
cuboids.

NOTICE
The generic styli are only included in the CALYPSO stylus system creator
in version 5.2 and higher. Therefore, it is not possible to load SSC files
with generic styli in older versions of the stylus system creator. But they
can be imported and displayed in older versions of the stylus simulation.
Naming and storing the After you have set up or modified the stylus system as desired, save it as
stylus system an SSC file with an appropriate name.
Exporting the stylus sys- The SSC file is not suitable for designing and copying as it does not contain
tem the information of a CAD file. You can, however, export a point file of
the stylus system and use it as a design basis.

1-6 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

Documenting the stylus For documentation of the stylus systems used by you, you can output one
system PDF file for each stylus system, listing all stylus components of the system.

Working with the Stylus System Creator

You can use the Stylus System Creator to “copy” on the screen all of the
styli used on your CMM and save them as SSC file. The import of the
corresponding SSC file provides CALYPSO with the necessary data to
simulate probing and to display the probing performed by the stylus in
the CAD window. Saved stylus systems can be loaded and edited.

Starting the Stylus System Creator

Start the stylus system creator via Planner ® Stylus System Crea-
tor. The loading of the program and stylus database is indicated by a
progress bar.
At the first program start, the Web Shop Selection dialog box will
then open asking you to select the desired webshop. Select the webshop
where you have already registered or, if you have not yet registered to a
certain webshop, select the one that is applicable for your region.
To skip the dialog in future, tick the Don't show this dialog again
option.
The Stylus System Creator program window will then open, display-
ing the main menu and the work area.

– You can remove a component with all the components attached to

it.
– You can connect another stylus system to a free docking point.

Saving an edited stylus system

1 Select File ® Save as and enter a file name.
The stylus system is saved as SSC file.

Start components
The “start assistant” assists you in creating a new stylus system in the
stylus system creator. You just need to select the technology, and the
correct start component will automatically be defined.
Start components are those components that enable to start the assembly
of a stylus system model. They are specific for a certain technology and
the calling program, i.e. CALYPSO. Examples:

Strategy Component
ZEISS VAST VAST Plate
ZEISS RDS / XXT RDS XXT

When creating a new stylus system model, select in the Create New
Stylus System window one of the technologies stored in the stylus
database.
– If only one start component exists in the stylus database, this will im-
mediately be added to the stylus system model.
– If several start components are stored in the stylus database, the com-
ponent tree will display only the ones that are available for the se-
lected technology.
The position selected for the start component corresponds to the zero
position of a bridge CMM, as was the case up to the stylus system creator
version 4.4. You cannot change the zero position manually.
After the start component, CALYPSO continues constructing the stylus in
the -Z direction. If the start component is part of an articulating probe
(e.g. an RDS), it will be rotated automatically in this direction.

Connecting a component
If the stylus system used on your CMM originates from a supported man-
ufacturer, you can assemble it in the stylus system creator using the dif-
ferent components and save it.
The components have docking points for the connection of other com-
ponents and connection points for connection to a docking point of the

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-9

Stylus System Creator

stylus system model. The stylus system library ensures that docking point
and connection point match.
Principle The assembly is a step-by-step procedure. You attach one component
after the other to the stylus system model until it is completed. Two pieces
of information are required:
– Which stylus component is to be attached?
– At what point of the stylus system model do you want to attach it?
The information can be given in any order. Once you have made the first
selection, you can select the second item by double-clicking and the com-
ponent will be connected.
This means, you have two options for connecting the components:

Component first Docking point first

1 Select the desired component. 1 Select a free docking point.
2Double-click the free docking point. 2Double-click the desired component.

We recommend the following procedure.

1 Select the component in the component tree.
2 In the Stylus System View, click the desired free docking point
that is represented by a transparent sphere.

NOTICE
Attachable components with pins can only be connected to components
with bore holes and cannot be rotated anymore after connection.

Component tree

Adapting the component tree

To facilitate finding the necessary components in the component tree,
you can adapt it to meet your requirements:
– ➤Filtering [⇨ 1‑10]
– ➤Changing the name scheme [⇨ 1‑12]
– ➤Setting the depth of the tree structure [⇨ 1‑13]
– ➤Adapting generic components [⇨ 1‑13]

Filtering
The filtering function allows you to limit the representation of the avail-
able components. All components that do not meet the filter criteria are
hidden and cannot be selected.

Names in the component tree

The structure of the component names can be defined individually in the
component tree.

How is the name scheme composed?

The component names serve to quickly find the desired components. To
this end, the names must be non-ambiguous and contain the essential
characteristic numbers. This can be achieved using variables.
You may use all characters of the keyboard for the name schemes. The
following characters are used as meta-characters in the name scheme:

Character Function
< Marks the beginning of a variable name. Use “<<” for the “<” char-
acter.
> Marks the end of a variable name. Use “>>” for the “>” character.
@ Opens the selection of special characters.
To represent the “@” symbol, select none of the special characters.

The following variables are available:

Date Variable Meaning

Catalog data
Length <L> Total length
Measure Length <ML> Measured length
Measure Extension Length <MLE> Extended measuring length
Shaft Diameter <DS> Shaft diameter
Shaft Extension Diameter <DSE> Diameter of the extended shaft
Sphere Diameter <DK> Diameter of the probing sphere
Diameter <DG> Diameter at the connection point
Width <B> Edge length
Material data
Material <Mat> Main material of the component
Probe Tip Material <TipMat> Material of the stylus tip
More...
Connection Type <ConType> Type of the connection point

When creating a name, the respective value of the component property

is used for the variable. If this value has not been defined, the following
is added to the name:
– for a catalog entry – the number “0”
– for a material property – nothing

1-12 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

Subcategories
The components are systematically and hierarchically arranged in the
component tree. The subcategories resulting from the component prop-
erties are used for this purpose.
Example The components of the “Stylus” type have e.g. the following subcate-
gories:
– Level 1 : Connecting type of the component
– Level 2 : Stylus tip material
– Level 3: Catalog value ML
– Level 4 : Catalog value MLE
– Level 5 : Component name
Number, type and arrangement of the subcategories are defined by the
manufacturer. You may, however, define here the hierarchical structure
depth. The higher the structure depth of the component tree, the less
components are listed at the “ends” of the trees, i.e. at the tips of the
branches.

Defining the structure depth

To activate and deactivate the defined structure depth, use the Show
stylus components in subcategories icon.
The structure depth is selected with the arrow symbol next to this switch.
Set one of the five structure depths (level 1 to level 5).
By clicking with the right mouse button on a tree section, you can see the
valid subcategories for the respective components:

Adapting generic components

In the stylus system creator, generic components are used to create com-
ponents that are not available in the program.
Up to CALYPSO version 5.2, only the cylinder, cuboid, sphere, rotary joint
and tilting joint geometric basic elements were included. As of version
5.2, the generic components also include generic styli the editable values
of which correspond to catalog data.
There are various ways of adapting generic components:

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-13

Stylus System Creator

– You can select the desired material for all generic components in a list
under Functional properties.
– In case of geometric objects, you can change the geometrical dimen-
sions under Changeable properties.
– In case of generic styli, you can change the specifications correspond-
ing to the catalog data under Changeable properties.
– Direct input: Simply select the desired value.

Selection box: Click the icon and select one of the admissible
values.

Slider: Click the icon and enter a freely selectable value in the
field or set a value by means of the slider.

The value is accepted by clicking the checkmark .

Importing stylus systems to CALYPSO

For a realistic run of the stylus simulation and in order to obtain informa-
tive results, the identically “copied” styli must be made known to CA-
LYPSO by the name used on the CMM.
In the stylus system creator you create both the stylus system to be im-
ported and the master stylus you will use.

Enabling a stylus system for the CMM

1 In CALYPSO, select Planner ® Import SSC File.

1-14 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Exporting stylus system data

The stylus system creator allows you to create, edit, and manage the stylus
system models in the form of SSC files. The SSC file is not suitable for
designing and copying as it does not contain the information of a CAD
file.
You can, however, export a point file of the stylus system and use it as a
design basis. The output file contains all docking points and positions of
the stylus tip center points in the coordinate system of the stylus system
creator.

Exporting the point file

1 Load the stylus system to be exported.
2 Select File ® Export.
3 Enter the path and name of the export file in the file selection window.
The construction points of the current stylus system are written into
an ASCII file with the file name extension CSV.

Format of the export file

The number of lines contained in the export file is identical with the num-
ber of exported points. . Each line indicates the X, Y and Z coordinates of
a point (in the coordinate system of the stylus system creator), separated
by a value separator.
Value separator and decimal separator are set via Properties ® Op-
tions in the Options window under Export Settings.
Example Example of an export file:

0 0 -52
0 7.5 -66
0 37.57016 -76.94464
0 0 -38.5
...

Outputting additional stylus system data

Each time you save the stylus system, you can output both the Point List
for Construction Support (see ➤Exporting stylus system data [⇨ 1‑17])
and additional files containing stylus data.
Output is done either in the directory used for stylus system output (SSC
file) or in a separate directory.

Making settings for the output of additional files

1 Load the stylus system to be saved.

Stock Data

Evaluating stock data

Basics The stylus system creator allows you to evaluate stock data, thus providing
you with an overview of the components in stock and other additional
information. The stylus system creator retrieves the stock data from an
XML file with a certain structure (see ➤Structure of the XML file with
stock data [⇨ 1‑20]). Such XML files can be generated by warehouse
inventory control systems or product planning and control systems (PPS).
The XML file comprises the following information:
– the date of generation of the XML file with the stock data.
– any comment of the creator of the XML file.
– a ZEISS ID for each component.
– a company-internal ID for each component.
– the number of components in stock.
Use of stock data After having made the directory with the XML file known to the stylus
system creator, the program window provides you with information on
the number of components in stock. If a company-internal ID was entered
in the XML file, this ID will also be shown in the program window.
This information will be reloaded and updated at every start.
You can filter the components according to the filter criteria Listed and
Available. If you select the Listed filter criterion, only the components
that are known to the product planning and control system will be listed
in the component tree. With the Available filter criterion, only the
components that are known and in stock will be listed.

Specifying the directory for stock data

To allow the stylus system creator to find the XML file, you must specify
the directory of this file.
Conditions:
– An XML file with a suitable structure is stored in a freely accessible
directory.
1 Select Properties ® Options and click Stock Data under Options.
2 Enter the directory of the XML file under Location.
If the XML file has the correct structure, the file will be loaded into the
stylus system creator.
Information about stock data provides you with information about
the XML file.

NOTICE
The stylus system creator loads the XML file from the specified directory
at every start.

Structure of the XML file with stock data

An XML file with stock data must have a certain structure so that it can
be loaded into CALYPSO.
Structure of the XML file The XML file consists of the main section “StockInformation” that must
comprise the following subsections:
– Date with the Year, Month, Day attributes
Contains the information about the date of generation of the XML
file. The attributes must represent valid numerical values.
– Comment with the attribute Text
You can save any comment.
– ComponentsInStock
Information about all stylus components known to the management
system and their number in stock. A section <Component .../> con-
sisting of maximum three attributes is created for each component:
– ZeissID
The Zeiss order number used in the stylus system creator. This ID
is also used for orders sent to the webshop and to Zeiss 3D Au-
tomation. The stylus system creator requires the Zeiss ID to identify
the components.
– StockID
Optional attribute that may contain any text. For example, you can
assign a company-internal ID to the component.
– SizeInStock
The number of components in stock. If the number of components
is zero, this means that the component is not in stock but is known
to the product planning and control system.

Updating the stylus database

The stylus database of the stylus system library must be updated from
time to time. This is to consider new manufacturers, product changes and
special products.
During update, a number of components is added to an existing compo-
nent database. Already existing components will be replaced if modifi-
cations have been made to them.

NOTICE
These modifications will not affect the components already assembled in
stylus systems.
It is possible to update the stylus database as follows:
– automatically after a CALYPSO update or installation of a service pack
After a CALYPSO update, the stylus database update starts automat-
ically when calling the stylus system creator for the first time. Existing
stylus components are modified and new ones are added.
– manually by updating
You can also add new components. This is usually necessary when
ordering special styli at Carl Zeiss 3D Automation (➤Reference: Stylus
System Creator [⇨ 1‑41]).
Procedure To update the stylus data, select File ® Import and set the file name
filter to “SSC update files (*.scl)” in the file selection dialog.
Once you have selected the desired update file, the stylus system creator
starts updating its stylus database. The existing database file is retained
and marked with the “.bak” ending. This is to restore the stylus database
in case updating fails.

NOTICE
The backup will be overwritten at the next update. If you start a new
updating process after an update failure, it will therefore not be possible
to restore the stylus database from the backup.

Example: Assembling and editing a

stylus system model

Scope of the present example

The possibilities offered by the stylus system creator can be learned best
with an example. The present example will lead you through the process

1-26 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

of creating a stylus system model for stylus simulation from the start up
to the saving of the model.
The example shows as many functions as possible – in practice, you will
only use them when required.

Example: Creating a new stylus system model

You start by creating a new stylus system.
1 Click the Create New Stylus System icon.
- or -
Select File ® New.
The Create New Stylus System window appears on the screen.

In this window you select the technology for which you want to create
a stylus system. This may be e.g. ZEISS VAST or ZEISS RDS. By clicking
Start, the program inserts the first component – the start component
– or shows the possible components.
2 Select VAST and click Start.
The component tree is filtered:
• The geometric components are shown under “Generics”.
• Under “Sensors”, only VAST sensors are displayed.
• “Adapter plates” displays components with the connection type
“[MT/VAST] MT/VAST” only. Two components are left in the ex-
ample.

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-27

Stylus System Creator

3 Click “[MT/VAST] MT/VAST adapter plate without cube”.

In the Component view, you can see the VAST plate and a trans-
parent preview appears in the Stylus System View.
4 Double-click “Start Point” in the stylus system tree.
The color of the plate changes: it is now a fixed component of the
stylus system model.
The component tree changes: It shows the “Extensions” branch.

1-28 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

Example: Connecting an extension

An extension with cube is to be connected to the start component.
1 In the component tree, under “Extensions” / “ThermoFit silver”, select
the extension “[VAST plate] Plate extension L25 Ø20 B20 ThermoFit
silver”.
2 By simple clicking, select the free docking point “(VAST plate) [-Z]” in
the stylus system tree.
A transparent preview is docked onto the start component.
3 Double-click the docking point in the stylus system tree.
The extension is attached.

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-29

Stylus System Creator

Results This results in the following changes:

– The attached component is highlighted in color in the graphic and its
free docking points are indicated by spheres.
– In the stylus system tree, all docking points of the attached extension
are displayed with their type (“M5”).
– The component tree is filtered again and then only shows components
with the connection type “M5”.

Example: Setting the tree depth

The next step is to connect an extension with a diameter of 11 mm and
a length of 40 mm to a docking point.
1 In the component tree, open the “Extensions” / “ThermoFit silver”
branch.
The number of extensions for selections can still be overlooked in our
example. In case of a larger selection, two options are recommended
to limit it:
2 Select level 2 (diameter) next to the Show stylus components in
subcategories icon.
The extensions are assigned to subcategories.

1-30 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

3 Under “ThermoFit Silver” / “M5”, navigate to the extensions with di-

ameter (DG) 11.
4 Click “[M5] extension L40 Ø11”.
The extension is shown in the Component view.

Do not yet insert the extension into the stylus system. In the following,
you will learn about a second method of finding the desired extension.

Example: Setting the filter

The second method for quickly finding a component is the filtering. One
filter is automatically active: filtering according to the type of free docking
point. You can now define further criteria.
1 Click Edit tree filter.
2 In the Tree Filter Dialog under Length, set from 40 to 40 and
activate this filter criterion.
Note: When leaving the input field, it will automatically be updated if
modifications have been made.
3 Click Activate.
The component tree changes as follows:

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-31

Stylus System Creator

4 Select the desired component.

The desired docking point is now to be selected in the graphical view
of the stylus system and not in the component tree.
5 For this, click the small transparent sphere at the cube of the already
inserted extension; the sphere symbolizes a free docking point in pos-
itive X direction.
The extension is added to the stylus system model.

1-32 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

Bear in mind that the modified filter is still active, i.e. only components
having the catalog value L (for Length) 40 will be shown. As a joint is
to be assembled now, deactivate the length filter.
6 Open the filter dialog, deactivate Length and click Activate.
Joints can be found in the component tree under “Connecting ele-
ments” / “Adjustable”. The joint with a length of 30 mm and a diam-
eter of 11 mm is to be connected to the extension.
7 Under “M5” / “Titanium”, click “[M5] Joint L 30 Ø11”.
The joint is shown in the Component view.
8 In the Stylus System View, click the only docking point of the
second extension.
The joint is added to the stylus system model.
The rotational axis is to be rotated by 10° and the entire joint by 90°
“downward”.
9 To do so, enter in the Main Axis Angle field the value 90° and under
Angle axis 1 the value 10°.
The stylus system model now looks as follows:

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-33

Stylus System Creator

Example: Editing the name scheme

The next task is to connect to the joint a stylus with a ruby sphere as stylus
tip and a diameter of 3 mm, without knowing yet which measuring
lengths are available. The component must be searched for in the com-
ponent tree.
The “Subcategories” method cannot be used if the fixed grading is not
suitable for your search. Here again, the filter method would be ideal, but
we want to explain now the third auxiliary function: the assignment of
your own specific names.
1 Deactivate the Show stylus components in subcategories
icon.
2 In the button bar above the component tree, click Define compo-
nent name scheme.
All styli are to be named in a way to include in their name the sphere
radius before the measuring length. As the components are alpha-
betically sorted in the component tree, this facilitates searching for the
correct stylus.
3 Select the Stylus scheme and edit the entry in the Definition field.

1-34 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

Stylus System Creator

The definition is a sequence of characters and variables. The variables

are marked by angle brackets. As soon as you enter the opening angle
bracket, the stylus system creator will show you the variables available
for selection.
4 First delete the entire entry in the definition line. (To return to the
default settings, click Default).
The connection type is to precede, and this in round brackets for better
identification:
5 Enter the characters “(” and “<”, then select from the Connection
Type <ConType> menu and close with “)”.

The closing angle bracket is automatically inserted. Under Example

you can see how the name will later appear in the component tree:
“(M5)”.
6 Enter a blank and the word “Sphere Diameter”, then another blank
and finally (with angle bracket) the variable Sphere Diameter
<DK>.
The name of your definition is now “(<ConType>) Sphere Diameter
<DK>”.
The Example field shows: “(M5) Sphere Diameter 0.8”.
7 Add the following additional texts and variables: “SphereMat: <Tip-
Mat> ML <ML> <Name>”.
The Example field now shows: “(M5) Sphere Diameter 0.8 Sphere-
Mat: Ruby ML 12 Stylus”.

61212-2731102 CALYPSO 1-35

Stylus System Creator

8 Click Close.
9 Select “Stylus” / “Sphere” in the component tree.
In the component tree you can see the result of your entries:

The representation of the individual components is too long.

10Open the dialog for the component names.
11Shorten the name definition for Stylus. Use for this the diameter
symbol “Ø” that is proposed for selection when you enter the @ char-
acter.
Definition: “(<ConType>) KØ <DK> <TipMat> ML <ML> <Name>”
Result: You can now successively select all components with a ruby
sphere of diameter 3 (they appear one below the other) and each time
see the preview:

Stylus System Creator

The stylus is added to the desired docking point.

Example: Geometric components

The next task is to connect an extension of length 70 in negative Z direc-
tion to the cube. This extension is currently not available in the component
database, but you can use a geometric component instead: the cylinder.
You can change the length of the cylinder.
– If you modify it before adding it to the stylus system model, this will
at the same time change the cylinder's standard length.
– If you modify it after assembly, the length modification will only refer
to the cylinder contained to the stylus system model.
1 Open the “Generics” branch.
2 Click “Cylinder (6P)”.
3 In the stylus system tree, double-click the desired docking point “(M5)
[-Z]”.
The cylinder is attached. Now edit the cylinder parameters under
Component properties.
4 In the component properties, set Material to “Tungsten carbide”.

1-38 61212-2731102 CALYPSO

The color of the cylinder changes, but this can only be noticed once it
has been connected.
5 Set the Cylinder Diameter to 11.
6 Set the Cylinder Diameter to 70.

You can connect additional stylus components to the cylinder.

Example: Saving stylus system model

At the end, the stylus system model is saved.
1 Click the Save Stylus System icon located above the stylus system
tree.

4 Select the desired directory in the Save Current Stylus System
window.
The file name proposed is made from the name of the stylus system.
It can be changed at will.
5 Click Save.
The SSC file will be saved.

Example: Replacing a component

After saving the stylus system model, it is to be modified again: The task
is to replace the L40 extension by an extension with the length of 60 mm.
1 Select the new component in the component tree.
2 In the stylus system tree, click twice the component to be replaced.
Note: This operation is possible in the stylus system tree only.

3 Select File ® Save to save the modified stylus system model.

The stylus system model saved previously will be overwritten.

NOTICE
If you wish to retain the previous stylus system model, select the Save
as... menu item.
The following applies to the replacement of components:
– The components must have the same number of docking points.
– After replacement, the alignment of the subsequent component may
change in an undesired way, e.g. when replacing a joint. In this case
you will have to manually adapt the stylus system model.

Stylus System Creator

Stylus database In the stylus system creator you join components to form a stylus system
model which will then be stored as a stylus system file. The stylus system
creator contains two types of component:
– Components that correspond to real stylus components provided by
certain manufacturers.
– Generic components in the form of standard geometric elements
whose size can be changed.
These components are used to model e.g. the imported stylus systems
from the CALYPSO stylus system creator.
The stylus components are contained in the stylus database that is instal-
led together with CALYPSO and the Stylus System Creator. You may also
update the stylus database independently from CALYPSO updates and
even install additional components.
Model <-> Reality – By means of the stylus system creator, you can copy your existing styli
and stylus systems by using the components and geometric elements
provided in the program.
– You may, however, also compose a stylus system model as desired
and then order the components used for this.

Stylus changer rack toolbox

Stylus changer rack toolbox
The stylus changer rack toolbox allows you to create and equip realistic
and true-to-scale models of stylus changer racks and to include them in
your work area.
You can thus represent your existing stylus system changers and stylus
systems on the CMM and simulate, as well, the stylus system change.

NOTICE
The stylus changer rack toolbox is not an independent program but part
of CALYPSO. Use the F1 key in a dialog box of the stylus changer rack
toolbox to open the context-sensitive online help of CALYPSO.

NOTICE
The stylus changer rack toolbox is part of option 3 “Simulation” of CA-
LYPSO.

Modelling stylus changer racks and using

models
The stylus changer rack toolbox is used to create and edit your stylus
changer rack models in the work area.
You can “copy” the stylus system changers used on your CMM on the
screen and save them. Thus, CALYPSO can simulate and display the au-
tomatic and manual stylus system change in the CAD window.
Saved stylus changer racks can be loaded and edited.
Operating sequence To model your stylus changer rack, proceed as follows:
– Create and position the desired stylus changer rack.
– Create holders and position them at the stylus changer rack.
– Assign stylus systems to the holders.
– Save the stylus changer rack as work area.
You can reload and edit the modelled stylus changer racks at any time.

NOTICE
To create and edit stylus changer racks, you must open a new and empty
measurement plan.
