9. D

1.1.2 Depending on the complexity and context of the statement, there are numerous
techniques to convert sentences into mathematical notation. To represent
mathematical ideas and operations, one approach is to use symbols and operators.
You can use "+" to denote addition, "-" to denote subtraction, "x" to denote
multiplication, and "/" to denote division, for instance. Variables and subscripts can
also be used to express certain numbers or amounts. It is a good practice to first
divide the statement into its constituent components before translating each section
into math notation when translating a sentence into that language.
1.2 Expression - a numeric value, a variable, or a mix of these, along with an operation
symbol.
Equation - consists of two expressions joined together by the equal symbol. To solve the
equation, we can concurrently change both sides of it (by adding, taking away,
multiplying, or dividing both sides).

1.3.1 A pen = 50 + 𝒙

1.3.2 Three pens and two pencil = 3 (50 + 𝑥) + 2( 3 𝑥)

1.4
1.4.1
Mass in kilograms (m) 1 2 3 6 11
Time in minutes (t) 85 130 175 310 535

1.4.2 t = 45m + 40
1.4.3 40 guest = 200 g x 40
= 8000 g
= 8 kg

t = 45m + 40
= 45(8) + 40
= 400 minutes
It will take 400 minutes / 6 hours 40 minutes to cook the stew.

QUESTION 2
2.1
2.1.1 Jowy – when removing the brackets on both sides Jowy didn’t multiply everything
inside the brackets instead he only multiplied the first term only.
Leekay – Made a mistake not dividing the right- & left-hand side with -3 to find the
value of x, instead he took the 3 on the left-hand side to the right-hand side and that
in not allowed when dealing with a product.

2.1.2 3 – (x + 8) = 2(x – 1)
3 – x – 8 = 2x - 2
-2x – x = -2 – 3 + 8
-3x = 3
−3𝑥 3
=
−3 −3

X = -1

2.1.3 The ability of integers to be distributed for multiplication over addition. If a term is
multiplied by other terms in brackets or by terms in another bracket, we must divide
the product of the first term's multiplication by all the terms in the second. Jowy and
Leekay must understand also that a factor outside the parenthesis is multiplied by
each term inside the parenthesis.
2.2
𝑥−5 3−4𝑥
2.2.1 − = 13
4 9

9(𝑥−5) 4(3−4𝑥)
− = 13
4∗ 9 9∗ 4

9(𝑥−5)−4 (3−4𝑥)
= 13
36

9𝑥 − 45 − 12 + 16𝑥 = 468
9𝑥 + 16𝑥 = 468 + 45 + 12
25𝑥 = 525
25𝑥 525
=
25 25

𝑥 = 21
2.2.2 First, I determined that 36 was the lowest common denominator between 4 and
9. The denominator was then changed to 36 by multiplying the first term by 9
and the second term by 4, respectively. We can solve the numerator by first
deleting the brackets because the denominator is the same. Remove the 36 from
the denominator by multiplying the left side by 36, and then multiply the right
side by 36 to get 468. Find the value of x after grouping similar phrases.

2.3 𝑥 2 − 4𝑦 2 − 6𝑥 + 9
= 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 9 − 4𝑦 2
= (𝑥 − 3)2 − (2𝑦)2
2.4 𝑥 + 𝑥 + 1 = 333
2𝑥 + 1 = 333
2𝑥 = 333 + 1
2𝑥 334
= 2
2
𝑥 = 167
The pages are 167 & 166.

The next same number is 52.
3.1.2 I increased the first and second sequence by using the rule provided (1st sequence
increased by 5 and 2nd sequence increased by 7) continuously until I found a
common number which was 52.
2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27, 32, 37, 42, 47, 52, 57, 62, 67……

3.2.3.1 𝑅𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑠 = 2𝑛 + 1
3.2.3.2 𝐵𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑠 = 𝑛2 + 2𝑛 + 3
3.2.4 Red squares = 2𝑛 + 1
= 2 (21) + 1

Black squares = 𝑛2 + 2𝑛 + 3

Total number of squares = 486 + 43
= 529
