Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8

FLOW OF ENERGY IN THE ECOSYSTEM

CONTENT : Flow of energy in the ecosystem

CONTENT STANDARDS: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the one-

way flow of energy & the cycling of materials in an ecosystem.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learners should be able to make a poster

comparing food choices based on the trophic level.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES: Describe the flow of energy through the

trophic levels. S8LT-Mi-22

I. Objectives

At the end of the period, the learners should be able to:

1. describe how energy flows in an ecosystem.
2. Illustrate the one –way flow of energy in an ecosystem
3. recognize the importance of conserving energy.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Flow of energy in the ecosystem

Reference : Science 8, teacher’s guide
Materials: DLP, hand –out, pictures, activity sheets, power point
presentation

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary activities
1. prayer
2. greetings
3. checking of attendance
4. setting of classroom standards
5. review

B. Motivation
-The teacher shows the pictures of ecosystems.
- Ask how do organisms survive in these ecosystems?
- recall the photosynthesis and ask how does energy in plants
transfer from one organism to the other?

1. Activity

-The class will be divided into five groups. Each group will be given
an activity sheets . Fifteen minutes will be given to do the task and
three minutes presentation /reporting of their output.
-Rubrics will be posted on the board

2. Analysis

The teacher will ask the following questions to the students and let
them discuss their answers.

1. What is the form of energy utilized by green plants?

2. Into what form of energy is light converted after the process of
photosynthesis?
3. What form of energy is stored in animals?
4. Do you think animal use all the energy they get from plants? Why or
Why not? How do you know?
5. Is the energy flow in the ecosystem cyclic or one way? Explain.

3. Abstraction
- Teacher explain the flow of energy in the ecosystem.

4. Application
- Using the paper strips , arrange the strips to illustrate the flow of enery in
the ecosystem.
- How will you help conserve energy in the ecosystem?

IV. Evaluation
In your ½ sheet of paper, answer the questions posted on the board.

V. Assignment
- Why is the flow of energy in the ecosystem described as inefficient? Cite a situation to
support your answer.

REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
Grade 8- Escuro
As an educator, I have the responsibility to create an atmosphere/surrounding that is conducive
to learning and to provide a classroom environment where students are encouraged to express
their own ideas and participate in their education experience. Before starting my lesson I see to it
that the room is clean and the chairs are properly arranged. I also keep myself and mind ready for
the class by preparing all the materials needed in my lesson.

I started my class with prayer, greeting to the students, checking their attendance and setting the
classroom standards. I asked them to give a recap about the previous lesson in a form of news
reporting. Presenting a picture is my way of motivating the mind of my learners with process
questions for them to answer, then I grouped them into five and each group has a copy of an
activity sheets. I encouraged them to participate and their outputs were evaluated with the use of
rubrics. In fact I have observed that my learners were very active and participative in group
discussion. They were enjoyed while doing their activity. I always wanted my learners to be
happy during my class so that students who are shy will not be afraid to participate. I also gave
reward to those groups with active participation of members. Every group presented their output
and I evaluated them based on the rubrics. During the discussion of the concept, I am using
HOTS and enabling questions which my school head shared to me during the previous SLAC
session & post conference. But I noticed, that some of my students were not able to cope up the
lesson . Simplified/rephrased questions or translated it into Filipino or vernacular which made
those inactive learners engaged in my discussion.

For the application of learning, I made it in a form of games so that the students will be
motivated to participate . Besides, I also prepared prizes for the winners. I found out that giving
reward is also an effective strategy in motivating students to participate actively.

I believed that my entire topic was delivered well and my students have understand the lesson.
Before leaving the class, I let them copy the enrichment activity to broaden their understanding
about the topic.
