In multiplying integers class, we have 3


rules that need to follow. These are the following
rules:

Rule #1. The product of a positive integer


and negative integer is NEGATIVE .

Rule #3. The product of two positive integer


is POSITIVE.

Rule #3. The product of two negative integer

is POSITIVE.

So, I have here some examples for you


to understand clearly our lesson.

But before that, let's have some recap


on the parts of multiplication.

MULTIPLICAND. While the second number or
the number that multiplies the multiplicand is the
MULTIPLIER. These two are called FACTORS
while the answer is called product/multiple.

Let's try to solve 3 × 4. Who wants to answer?

Very good! The answer is 12 but let me


show you how to solve it using counters.
We have the multiplicand # 3, so let's put
3 positive sign.

multiplicand to our multiplier which is the # 4 . It
means that we need to make a 4 group of 3
positive sign.

12 positive sign. It means that if the


product of two integers is positive the answer
is positive. So 3×4 is equals to positive 12.

The thing you need to remember, if the


multiplier is negative integer it means that we
need to get the opposite of our counters. The
opposite of our counter which is the negative is
the positive. Therefore the answer to the
problem is :

-2×-3=6

Again class, , when we multiply 2 negative


integer the answer should be positive integer.

Always remember class, if the product of
two integers with same sign is a positive
integers. Whether they are both positive or
negative.

This time, we'll try to solve the problem


with different sign.

Let's solve this using counter.

Our multiplicand here is 2. So, let's put 2


positives and our multiplier is also 2.

So that, we need to put 4 positive.

Again, if our multiplier is negative integers
we need to flip over our counter and get the
opposite sign. Since our counter is all positive,
we're going to make it all negative.

Therefore the answer is :

2×-2=-4

As you observe, when we are multiplying 2


integers with different sign the answer must be
negative integers.
