BAGPIPES
Your MBS is an electronic instrument that requires the standard care of this
type of device:
Do not submerge in water, do not expose to sources of excessive heat, do not
knock about or treat roughly, and above all use common sense when handling
an instrument of these characteristics.
It is important to avoid rotating the chanter on its chanter stock.
No problem if remove blowpipe from stock.
Remember this point especially if you lend the bagpipes to a piper for the
first time! The natural reaction is to rotate the chanter on its stock, but it
must be avoided.
The MBS 300 is supplied with a minimum battery charge. Errors may result if
the bagpipes are connected to the computer before the battery is fully charged.
Although these errors will not harm the system, it is advisable to fully charge the
battery before the first use.
The full charge is carried out by connecting the end of the cable with the round
connector to the rear of the bellows of the MBS 300 and the end with the USB
connector to a USB port of the computer or to a charger with a USB output
connected directly to the current.
The electricity supply must be maintained for eight hours.
If the battery is fed through the USB port of the computer, keep the latter on
while charging the battery.
The autonomy of the MBS 300 in wireless operation is two and a half hours.

Turning the bagpipes on and off
To turn on the BMS-300 press the white upward arrow on the left-hand side of
the keyboard for three seconds.
To turn off the BMS-300 press the two white arrows on the keyboard (upwards
and downwards) at the same time for three seconds.
Install the “Hevia’s bagpipe” application (you only need to drag it from the disc
folder to the desktop or whichever directory you want).
Install the USB drivers (usually on Mac Os X, 64 bits is the appropriate version).
These drivers and other 32-bit drivers can be found on the installation disc.
Remove the bagpipes from their case and connect the four-pin round connector
to the rear of the bellows.
This connection is only for fingering edit, no necessary for playing.
For playing, only this:
Connect the other end of the cable to a USB port of the computer.
Turn on the computer.
Turn on the bagpipes by pressing the upper left key (upwards triangle) of the
keyboard during a couple of seconds.
VERY IMPORTANT!
The chanter sensors must be kept away from any contact with hands,
body, furniture, etc. during the few seconds it takes for the bagpipes to
turn on. In other words, hold the bagpipes by the chanter stock but away
from the sensors.
This allows for the correct calibration of the sensors.
Connect the round male connector to the female connector of the battery box at
the back of the bellows.
Connect the USB connector to the computer or the MIDI device (sound module,
sampler etc.).
Switch on the MBS-300 by pressing the white arrow on the left for a few
seconds with vertex pointing upwards on the instrument panel of the chanter
stock.

Connection by Bluetooth
Connect the bluetooth USB MIDI stick of Hevia Electronic Bagpipes to the
computer or MIDI device (sound module, sampler etc.).
Switch on the MBS-300 by pressing the white arrow on the left for a few
seconds with the vertex pointing upwards on the instrument panel of the
chanter stock.
Check in the display that “BT status” (Bluetooth status) is in position number 1
(the arrow with the upwards vertex enables us to navigate the different
parameters of the display, until we reach “BT status”, on Page 3).
Wait a few seconds until the stick LED changes from orange to blue.
Now you can play. When the stick receives a MIDI signal, a green LED will
blink.

MBS 300
Menu settings.
The MBS 300 is a powerful MIDI controller with more than forty configurable
command lines that allow the player to adapt it to his/her needs and tastes at
any moment.
Fingering, pressure control, sensitivity of the sensors, etc. are only some of the
settings that can be configured to have a fully customised instrument.
Below is a description of the different menus, their use and how to handle them.
Main page
Program Number
This is indicated by three large-sized digits, and can be seen at all times from
the performance position.
This informs the player about which program has been selected (from one to
99).
It is possible to select another program number using the upwards and
downwards arrows for the right-hand thumb on the rear of the chanter, or using
the arrows on the seat keyboard or on the computer application.
Keep the arrows of the chanter pressed for several seconds to change the
program numbers faster.
Pressure indicators
A dash appears under the program number when the MBS is on standby.
As the pressure of the bellows increases, asterisks indicate the pressure level:
*One asterisk indicates that enough pressure has been reached for
the drones to start to sound.
** Two asterisks indicate that enough pressure has been reached for
the chanter to start to sound.
*** Three asterisks indicate enough pressure has been reached for
the high octave.

The pitch bend is the MIDI message that allows the player to increase or
decrease the pitch of a note.
The correct handling of the pitch bend is fundamental to achieve realistic results
with the MBS 300.
Successively change to different pitch bend modes (different ways in which the
instrument responds to the players intention to alter the tone of the notes) by
keeping the last sensor of the rear of the chanter pressed (red colour on the
lower rear part).
A: The pitch bend acts just like in traditional bagpipes (sliding the fingers over
the holes or part of the holes).
A-B: The pitch bend acts just like in traditional bagpipes but also sliding the
right-hand thumb on the two slides (upwards or downwards) that are located
above and below the latter.
B: The pitch bend only responds to the two slides for the right-hand thumb.
-: A dash indicates the deactivation of the pitch bend command.

PROGRAM
This also indicates the program number that in use. But this time the information
appears both on the MBS 300 display and on the application.
PRESET
This function is especially useful for people who want to play with different
fingerings at the same concert.
For example:
If program number 15 holds a Scottish bagpipes sound, associated to Scottish
fingering, an appropriate bellows pressure for Scottish bagpipes and any other
setting at a certain position, but the player wants program 16 to hold Irish
bagpipes, with the uilleann mode activated, uilleann fingering, appropriate
bellows pressure, etc., that certain preset (the entire configuration of the forty
settings) can be associated to that program number only.
At number 16 the player would play the Irish bagpipes with their own fingering
and then would move on to whichever bagpipes needed by returning to number
15 or selecting number 17.
When a program number is associated to a certain preset (between one and
five possible numbers) a small number appears on the main page indicating
that the preset is active.
Below are instructions on how to assign presets to program numbers.
SELECT
This is used to select the active fingering. The MBS 300 accepts two different
fingerings at the same time. Each one of them can be totally customised by the
player.
Once the fingering has been saved with a name (as we will see in advanced
functions), store it on the MBS 300 memory and use it in combination with
another four possibilities.
The MBS 300 is provided with a fingering called “HEVIA”. The latter accepts
open and closed positions and is a good starting point to create new fingerings.
At the time of order may request other fingerings (Galician, Scottish, etc.).
PB MODE
This selects one of the four pitch bend modes described on the main page.

HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
VIB TUNE
This selects grade of detuning assigned to the sensor selected for the general
vibrato (that affects the entire chanter). Another individual vibrato for each note
may be assigned when varying the fingering. This individual vibrato can be
assigned both in position and detuning range.
In the default preset, the vibrato is assigned to the last sensor of the chanter
(additional sensor that can be activity with the right-hand little finger).
In the event of programming the fingering of bagpipes with the little finger hole
diverted from the axis of the rest of the scale (Asturian or Galician bagpipes) it
is advisable to use this sensor for the vibrato and the immediately higher sensor
to the seventh note of the scale. The greater the proximity of the latter to the
immediately higher sensor (the tonic sensor) the more this helps the player get
used to a chanter with all the holes centred.
In the event of programming the fingering of bagpipes with all the holes centred
(Scottish or Irish) it is advisable to use the last sensor to the note and the
immediately higher sensor to the vibrato or any auxiliary note needed.
This helps players to play with the intermediate phalanges, keeping an
appropriate distance between fingers.
D. PRESS
This selects the pressure necessary for the drones to start to sound. It is
advisable to keep the bellows deflated and to not vary the pressure of the latter
while working on this setting.
C. PRESS
This selects the pressure necessary for the chanter to start to sound. It is
advisable to keep the bellows deflated and to not vary the pressure of the latter
while working on this setting.
C. PB. 0
This selects the exact pressure point at which the tuning of the chanter is kept
at point 0 when the PRESS CONTROL mode in position 1 is activated. It is
advisable to keep the bellows deflated and to not vary the pressure of the latter
while working on this setting.
10
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
H. OCT
This selects the pressure necessary to reach the high octave. It is advisable to
keep the bellows deflated and to not vary the pressure of the latter while
working on this setting.
H. OCT PB 0
This selects the exact pressure point at which the tuning of the chanter in
second octave is kept at point 0 when the PRESS CONTROL mode in position
1is activated. It is advisable to keep the bellows deflated and to not vary the
pressure of the latter while working on this setting.
UILLEANN M.
This selects the uilleann mode that activates the sensor at the end of the
chanter to be activated with the leg as in the uilleann pipes (activated 1,
deactivated 0).
This sensor is also capacitive; therefore, the distance to the leg affects the
tuning, depending on the programmed fingering.
11
HEVIA

BAGPIPES
Page 2
UILL. PB.
Uilleann pitch bend. This selects the grade of detuning when the notes are
played while the leg sensor is activated in uilleann mode.
This range is general, but the fingering can be programmed individually for each
note.
SENS RANGE
This selects the ideal distance (range) at which the sensors of the chanter
respond. Players should adapt this setting to their interpretative tastes.
Negative values bring the fingers closer to the chanter.
Positive values separate them.
PROGRAM CHANGE
OCTACT 0
This indicates which octave is used in accordance with the bellows pressure.
This setting is only used for technical service functions.
CHANTER VEL
Chanter velocity. This assigns the MIDI velocity of the notes of the chanter.
Take note: MIDI velocity has nothing to do with the velocity with which notes are
played or the speed with which the computer responds.
If this setting is changed the notes are more “aggressive” when played or the
volume turns up or down.
By default its value is 84, which is an appropriate value to play with the sounds
provided for GarageBand. For other modules it may be appropriate to drop to
64.
12
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
A variation of this setting significantly affects the sound realism.
B. D. VEL
Bass drone velocity. This assigns the MIDI velocity to the note of the first drone.
For Hevia sounds keep the value at 32.
T. D. 1 VEL
Tenor drone 1 vel. This assigns the MIDI velocity to the note of the second
drone. For Hevia sounds keep the value at 32.
T. D. 2 VEL
Tenor drone 2 vel. This assigns the MIDI velocity to the note of the third drone.
C. CHAN
Channel chanter. This assigns to the chanter a MIDI channel number between
0 and 15.

1 D. NOTE
1 Drone note. This assigns the MIDI note number to the first drone. By default
the number is 36 (C, two octaves below the chanter tonic).
2 D. NOTE
2 Drone note. This assigns the MIDI note number to the first drone. By default
the number is 48 (C, one octave below the chanter tonic).
3 D. NOTE
3 Drone note. This assigns the MIDI note number to the first drone. By default
the number is 48 (C, one octave below the chanter tonic).
CALIBRA
Calibration. The sensors can lose their correct calibration on certain occasions,
as when the bagpipes are turned on with a finger near a sensor.
To correct this problem press the arrow towards the right on the command line,
taking it to position 1 while keeping the sensors away from the fingers and the
body for a few seconds.
The entire chanter will recalibrate.

SOUND
Keep this line in position 1 to be able to play the sound programs provided with
the SGM 300 for VFX library or for the PC rompler. Change it to position 0 to
play any other sound program or any other standard sound module.
BACKLIGHT
This activates or deactivates the display backlight, allowing players to view the
information in low visibility conditions (stage with hardly any light).
It is advisable to keep the backlight in position 0 if it is not strictly necessary in
order to extend the life of the battery.
PR CONTROL
15
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
Page 4
The correct use of the following settings provides extraordinary realism when
performing with the MBS 300.
With these settings the degree of upwards or downwards detuning is assigned
with regards to points C. PB. 0 and H. OCT PB 0, in other words, regarding the
ideal pressure points, both in the high and low octave, when the PR CONTROL
is activated in position 1.
Upwards or downwards detuning can be independently regulated.
A range of plus/minus 10 involves being very slightly out of tune, which provides
great realism to a performer who has a fair control over the instrument and
wants to play it comfortably.
For a performer with hardly any control on the bellows pressure the PR
CONTROL can be suppressed.
However, as a teaching tool, it is very useful to assign two high-value ranges
(30 or 40), with which the student is obliged to maintain a constant tempero
when searching for the correct tune.
RANGE UP
This assigns the upwards detuning range with regards to points C. PB. 0 and H.
OCT PB 0.
RANGE DOWN
This assigns the downwards detuning range with regards to points C. PB. 0 and
H. OCT PB 0.

SLIDE
This assigns the MIDI message number attributed to the two rear slides of the
chanter for the right-hand thumb.
By default it is 224 (pitch bend), but other values can be assigned (volume,
expression, etc.).
SAVE
This saves all the settings assigned in our presets, so that the MBS 300 is
available exactly how it was left when turned on again.

Collection of sounds.
The MBS-300 is a complete MIDI controller that can play any external sound
module or any synthesis program or virtual sampler.
Nevertheless, Hevia Electronic Bagpipes is pleased to offer a collection of
sounds based on different European bagpipes.
There is included a rompler “Hevia Electronic Bagpipes” for PCs that can be
used as a stand-alone instrument or as a plug-in for any host program.
There is also included a VFX library containing this rompler for VFX application
(you can download it from SM Pro Audio web site).
This VFX library can run in V-machine (SM pro Audio hardware host for vsti
pluggins).
Select the option “Program change” in position 2 and the option “Sounds” in
position 1 to be able to play them with the MBS-300 in rompler and VFX library.
It is also a good idea to keep “chanter vel” at 64 and “drones vel” at 32 provided
that you want to play sounds prepared by Hevia Midi Bagpipes rompler.

Update
Install the "Hevia App" package (double click and follow the steps).
Note:
In Windows, the first time you try to load a fingering, a message will be shown,
indicating that Windows is looking for usb drivers for the device. We must do
nothing. Just wait for the message that indicates the device is ready for use.
Then we can proceed with the change of fingering.
19
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
Follow the steps to indicate the route of the update file ("search"). You will be
requested to select 1 of the "update" options and "save" from the MBS-300
keyboard (wait a few seconds before pressing "ACCEPT" in the application).
After pressing "ACCEPT", the new software will start loading in the MBS-300
and will take a few minutes.
At the end, you will receive a message indicating that the loading was
successful, and you will be prompted to turn on the bagpipe.
Do this as though the display is fully turned off, regardless of the message
"waiting for download" still being active.
The start-up process will take several minutes because all the new data is being
loaded (including fingering).
Take into account that the update process destroys all the fingerings that have
been edited (only the default fingerings will be kept).
If you wish to use your own fingering files, you must reload them after the
update has finished.
Loading a new fingering
The MBS-300 admits up to two fingerings in its software. You can specify the
two you prefer when ordering.
You should not add new fingerings without removing an existing one. This could
cause software damages that could only be repaired by the technical service.
-If the fingering to be loaded does not have a new name, but coincides with one
of those in the MBS-300, it is not necessary to previously remove any fingering.
It is considered that there is not a new fingering, but a change in the existing
one.
-Connect the MBS-300 to the computer and open the “Hevia’s Bagpipe”
application.
-Click on “fingering”.
-A dialog box will appear and you will be prompted to search for the fingering
file you wish to include.
20
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
Using the “search” button, indicate the route of the fingering file and press
“accept” (the path to file should be easy, for example on the desktop).
Open the folder where the text file is located, press the "alt" key, click and drag.
This ensures you are copying a text file that is identical to the previous one.
There will be a sequential number suffix at the end of name of the second file.
For instance, if you have copied "Hevia", the second file will be called
"Hevia1.txt". If you have copied "Hevia2.txt",the name will be "Hevia3.txt", and
so on.
Another option:
Select the file, press cmd+c and then cmd+v, and you will have copied and
pasted into the same folder an identical file which will also appear with a
number suffix.
Now open this second file with any text editor (preferably text-edit, in Mac). This
way you will keep the original unchanged, in case there are any errors to be
eliminated.
It is important to do it this way and never to use the "save as" command,
otherwise the downloading of the fingering would produce errors.
21
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
When you open the fingering file in any text editor (for instance, text-edit) a list
like this will appear:
22
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
HEVIA, in this case, is the name of the fingering.
Number “1” indicates “normal pressure of first octave”.
Then, the state of the nine sensors to be programmed.
The first on the left is the hole for the left thumb.
The second is the left index finger, the third and the fourth are the left middle
and ring fingers, respectively. The four following ones correspond to the right
hand: index, middle, ring and little fingers. Lastly, the one on the far right is the
sensor for the end of the chanter, which you operate with your leg, for instance
when you play in uilleann mode.
The lowest hole in the front of the chanter is designed for a fixed level of vibrato
and is not involved in the fingering.
To program the fingering, the word "ON" is assigned to closed holes and the
word "OFF" to open holes.
The name of the note appears to the right of the sequence of sensors.
You can use Latin nomenclature (e.g. Sib) or international nomenclature (A#). It
does not matter whether some notes are in Latin nomenclature and others are
in international nomenclature.
What does matter is that the distance between any sequence command has to
be one space. Only one! If you make a mistake in the spelling or in the
separation of commands (for instance, two spaces), there will be a download
error.
Given that it is very easy for this to happen during the first attempts, it is
advisable to not introduce many changes at once, and also to take note of
those you have introduced already. This way, if there were an error, it would be
easier to locate it without having to look over several hundred lines.
Further to the right is a number which represents the MIDI note number that the
controller sends in that position (the piano's central C is 60). Normally the
fingerings for the MBS-300 are built around that note, that is, the C major mode.
The resulting tonality is independent of the fingering, as it will always be
conditioned by the sampler, sounds module or sounds program on the
computer.
Always editing on the C major scale allows us to save significant efforts when
programming the fingering, as you must take into account that the fingering
must include not only the real notes of two octaves (or more, if you wish), but
also all their alternatives and all the possibilities of ornaments (grace notes) you
wish to use.
This is why it is easier to base yourself on an already established text file rather
than starting from scratch.
In addition, the “Hevia” sounds are already programmed for the resulting note to
have the tonality that corresponds to each type of bagpipes.
Moreover, the MBS-300 has a "transport" menu which allows you to transport
that C scale to whichever tonality you wish.
Lastly, at the right hand side of each line there is another positive or negative
figure (if negative with a "-" sign beforehand). This figure represents the amount
23
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
of hundredths of tone that the note emitted in said position deviates from,
upwards (positive) or downwards (negative) from zero point.
As you know, a same note may have two different positions, but there is almost
always a small tonal difference between them.
By perfectly dominating the out of tune values for each position you will achieve
a complete fingering with countless expressive resources (for instance, vibrato).
It will also allow you to adapt the scale to non tempered instruments or to
instruments with special tunings (for instance the Gaita Sanabresa or other
bagpipes).
If you wish to change an already existing position in the fingering file you only
need switch an "ON" for an "OFF" or, if applicable, change the name of the note
and the MIDI number (or the relative out-of-tuneness).
However, it is very important to respect the one-space separation between the
different commands and not include any typos.
If you wish to add a new position, type in the "ADD" command plus space plus
the name of the fingering, plus the octave pressure number, plus the status of
the nine sensors, plus the name of the note (Latin or international) plus the MIDI
note number plus the out-of-tuneness figure (positive or negative).
If you wish to change the name of the fingering (for instance "HEVIA" for
"SCOTTISH BASIC" you should use the "find" (control+F) command of the text
editor to replace one word for another.
Lastly, it is advisable to always check that under the last line of text there is
another line where, if you place yourself, the cursor is in the first space (that is,
as though you have written the whole text up to the last number of the last line
and then you had pressed "enter" without having written anything in that new
line.)
Careful! There should only be one line after the last number, never two or more.
24
HEVIA
ELECTRONIC
BAGPIPES
Once you have edited the fingering according to your preferences, you can
save it in the File menu, choosing "Save", and never "Save as".
Then load it onto the MBS-300 as indicated above.
You can share the fingering files with other users, sending them via email. This
opens up a world of infinite possibilities in which each player provides their own
improvements.
25
