The Cycle of Life

All living things are born, grow, reproduce and die.
Humans, animals and plants go through these four stages
of life.
Humans are born, they grow up, they have little ones and
then they get old and die.
Animals are born, they grow up, they have little animals
and then they get old and die.
Plants are born, they grow up, they have little trees and
then they get old and die.

Take for example the life cycle of a chicken:

Growing
All living things grow. Most animals hatch from eggs.
Living things are placed in groups according to how the
look along with other characteristics. Animals that hatch
from eggs belong to the following groups: birds,
amphibians, reptiles and fish. Humans and some animals
are mammals. Mammals are born; they do not hatch
from eggs.
When a human is born it is called a baby.

The five senses

Humans have five senses. Each sense is controlled by an
organ. The organs help us to see, touch, smell, hear and
taste many things found in our environment. The
environment consists of everything around us.

19
Four of our sense organs are found in the head; the ears,
the eyes, the nose and the tongue.
The skin is the largest of the five sense organs. The skin
covers the entire human body.

Eyes Ears Nose Skin tongue in the mouth

The eyes are the organs used for seeing.

The ears are the organs used for hearing.
The nose is the organ used for smelling.
The skin is the organ used for touching or feeling. Sometimes
hands are used to show the skin. You touch more things with
your hands than any other part of the body.
The tongue which is in the mouth is the organ used for tasting.
The brain controls all the five sense organs.

Our planet Earth

The name of the planet on which we live is Earth. Earth is

made up of air, land and water. Planets are celestial
30
bodies that do not produce their own light. They depend
on the Sun for light. The sun is a star.
Earth is a planet because it does not have its own light.
Earth gets its light from the sun.
Both living things and non-living things live on Earth.

Living things and Non-living things

32
Everything that is found around us can be said to be
either a living thing or a non-living thing. Both living
things and non-living things need each other.
Animals and plants are living things. Living things are
born, grow, reproduce and die. They need to eat and
breathe in order to live.
Non-living things are not alive. Non-living things are not
born, they do not grow, they do not reproduce and they
do not die. Rocks, sand, water, air and sunlight are non-
living things. Man-made things like houses, chairs,
pencils, sharpeners and erasers are non-living things.
Humans are living things. Humans are born, they grow,
they reproduce and then they die.
When a human is born it is called a baby, when it grows it
is called a child, when it reproduce it is called an adult,
and when it dies it is usually of old age.

62
Plants are important to humans and animals because they
provide food and shelter.
Many of the food we eat every day come from plants. The
wood that we use to build our houses come from plants.
Most animals eat fruits, seeds and leaf from plants. Animals live
in the forest. The forest is made up of many, many different
types of plants.
Humans also eat many foods that come from plants. We eat
leaf, stems, roots, fruits and vegetables.

are eaten with bread or another product. For example
you eat bread and cheese, butter and bread or tortillas.
You may drink a yogurt for a snack or an ice-cream for a
treat.

Meats
77
Meats are the flesh of an animal that can be eaten. Most
meats come from mammals, birds and fishes. In Roatan
people eat iguanas. An iguana is a reptile.
Some mammals that humans eat are: cow, sheep, pig,
deer, agouti, goat, etc…
Meat that comes from cow is called beef.
Meat that comes from pig is called pork.
Meat that comes from deer is called venison.
Meat that comes from sheep is called mutton.
Meats that are hunted in the wild are called game or
quarry meats.

chicken turkey

Most people in Roatan eat chicken almost every day. The

chicken is a domestic bird. We grow chickens at home or
at a poultry; chickens may be grown by thousands to sell
in the shops and supermarkets.
A poultry is a place where chickens are grown for packing
and selling. “Pollo Norteño” and “Pollo Rey” each have
poultry.
In countries where “Thanksgiving” is celebrated it is
customary for people to eat turkey.
In some countries in Europe; quails and ducks are a
delicacy.

How to stay healthy?
Eating healthy is not the only way to stay healthy. In
order to be healthy we must also exercise and play.
Being healthy includes many other things. We must visit
the dentist at least three times a year. We must also go
for a general medical checkup at least once a year. If you
are feeling a little sick when in school you can visit the
school nurse.
When playing we must play in healthy environments. We
should not play in creeks or gullies where garbage or
waste products are emptied.
If the beach is dirty or the water smells we must not
swim in it. We must keep our house and room clean to
avoid pest to live in it. Roaches and rats are considered
pests. If pests such as these live in your house you can
get sick. These animals carry sicknesses.

82
On the beach
When on the beach you can play and eat. Remember it is
important to play safe and eat healthy snacks.
We usually go to the beach when the day is sunny and
clear. When we go to the beach we do many things.
Some of us go to run, play and swim in the sea. Others go
to read and listen to the waves. Many people go to the
beach to get a sun-tan.

Why do you go to the beach?

Water
Water has three forms: solid, liquid and gas.

Solid water
We know solid water as ice. Any liquid that hardens is in the solid state
of water.

Liquid water
We know liquid water as drinking water or any water used at home.
When you can place your hand in the water it is in the liquid state.

Water as gas (gaseous)

When we see a gray cloud we see water in its gas (gaseous) state. We
also see water in a gaseous state when the kettle with water is boiling
hot.

The Sun
93
The sun is a star. The sun makes its own light. The sun
appears to be yellow in colour. The sun is made up of a
substance called sulphur. The sulphur in the sun causes it
to create its own heat. The heat is very useful to us.

Heat helps the plants to produce its own food and we eat
many plants and parts of plants. After it rains the heat
from the sun helps the earth to dry up again. Animals like
the iguana and the crocodiles enjoy sitting for many
hours in the sun.

does not produce its own light. The moon is not a star. It
reflects light from the Sun.

We only see the moon at night. It mirrors the light it gets

from the sun. Sometimes the moon appears to have
different shapes.
