Colour the planet accordingly: water(blue), air(white) and
land(brown).
32
Everything that is found around us can be said to be
either a living thing or a non-living thing. Both living
things and non-living things need each other.
Animals and plants are living things. Living things are
born, grow, reproduce and die. They need to eat and
breathe in order to live.
Non-living things are not alive. Non-living things are not
born, they do not grow, they do not reproduce and they
do not die. Rocks, sand, water, air and sunlight are non-
living things. Man-made things like houses, chairs,
pencils, sharpeners and erasers are non-living things.
Humans are living things. Humans are born, they grow,
they reproduce and then they die.
When a human is born it is called a baby, when it grows it
is called a child, when it reproduce it is called an adult,
and when it dies it is usually of old age.

Animals
35
On Earth we can classify all animals as Domestic and Wild animals.
Domestic animals live among humans. Wild animals live in the forests
and jungles.
Domestic animals are those animals that live around us and in our
houses. Some examples of domestic animals that live with us are dogs
and cats, they are called pets.
Other domestic animals that live around us are hens, roosters, ducks,
geese, turkeys, cows, sheep, rabbits, goats, horses, etc…

________, ________, _________, _________ and _________
2. Classify each picture as: amphibian, bird, fish, mammal, reptile
55
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals that do not have bones.
Invertebrates have no bones in the inside part of their body.
The two most important groups of invertebrates are insects
and worms.
Insects
Insects are animals that have no bones, they have six legs, two
or more wings, and some have antennae.
Some insects are helpful to humans, such as the bees and the
silk butterfly. Other insects can cause harm to humans; such as
grasshopper, mosquito, roach, louse, sand-fly, housefly and
wasp.
56
Helpful insects
honey bee
The Bee produces honey and beeswax for us. They also help in
pollination of other plants.

Worms
59
Worms are invertebrate animals. They have no bones.
Worms have long bodies without any feet. Most worms
live in the soil. Worms that live in the soil are called
earthworms.
In Roatan we sometimes use earthworms for fishing.
Plants
60
Plants are living things that make their own food. Plants
cannot move from place to place. They grow in the soil or
water and usually have green leaves.
Plants are first a seed, then they grow into a tree, they
have flowers and then fruits. Inside of the fruit there are
seeds that start this process again. The main parts of a
plant are leaf, stem, root, flower, seed and fruit.

dairy products are milk, cheese, cream, yogurt, butter,
etc…
Meats
77
Meats are the flesh of an animal that can be eaten. Most
meats come from mammals, birds and fishes. In Roatan
people eat iguanas. An iguana is a reptile.
Some mammals that humans eat are: cow, sheep, pig,
deer, agouti, goat, etc…
Meat that comes from cow is called beef.
Meat that comes from pig is called pork.
Meat that comes from deer is called venison.
Meat that comes from sheep is called mutton.
Meats that are hunted in the wild are called game or

How to stay healthy?
Eating healthy is not the only way to stay healthy. In
order to be healthy we must also exercise and play.
Being healthy includes many other things. We must visit
the dentist at least three times a year. We must also go
for a general medical checkup at least once a year. If you
are feeling a little sick when in school you can visit the
school nurse.
When playing we must play in healthy environments. We
should not play in creeks or gullies where garbage or
waste products are emptied.
If the beach is dirty or the water smells we must not
swim in it. We must keep our house and room clean to
avoid pest to live in it. Roaches and rats are considered
pests. If pests such as these live in your house you can
get sick. These animals carry sicknesses.

On the beach
When on the beach you can play and eat. Remember it is
important to play safe and eat healthy snacks.
We usually go to the beach when the day is sunny and
clear. When we go to the beach we do many things.
Some of us go to run, play and swim in the sea. Others go
to read and listen to the waves. Many people go to the
beach to get a sun-tan.
83

The Sun
93
The sun is a star. The sun makes its own light. The sun
appears to be yellow in colour. The sun is made up of a
substance called sulphur. The sulphur in the sun causes it
to create its own heat. The heat is very useful to us.
Heat helps the plants to produce its own food and we eat
many plants and parts of plants. After it rains the heat
from the sun helps the earth to dry up again. Animals like
the iguana and the crocodiles enjoy sitting for many
hours in the sun.
