1. In your own words, explain what the main information in CAPS document is about?

 The curriculum statement and assessment policy statement is a revision of the previous
national curriculum statement and what were called learning outcomes and assessment
standards in the national statement curriculum is now called content and skills in CAPS.
 Gives teachers detailed guidelines of what to teach and assessed on a grade by grade and
subject by subject basis.
 It main purpose is to lessen the administrative burden on teachers and ensure consistency
and guidance for teachers when teaching.
 The teaching and learning of the subject have specific aims, skills, and the focus of content
areas and the weighting of content areas.
 It also provides detailed week by week planning for teachers to follow and gives clear
guidance in terms of pacing and progression.
 It also give clear guidance of assessment requirements
2. Read the section on the general aims of the South African Curriculum and summarise the
aspects listed under this heading.
 The South African Curriculum is to ensure that children acquire and apply knowledge and a
skill is in a ways that is meaningful to their own lives.
 The curriculum promote knowledge in local contexts while is being sensitive to global
imperatives
 The national curriculum statemate grade R-12 serves the purposes of equipping learners in
irrespective of their socio-economics background race, gender, physical ability in
meaningful participation of a free country.
 It also provide access to higher education and base on principles it making sure that the
educational imbalances of the past are redressed and equal educational opportunities is
provided for all sections of the population.
 It has aims to produce learners that are able to identify and solve problems and make
decisions using critical and creative thinking.
 See the attached grid plan the allocation time of my mathematics subject.
3. Read the first topic of the Annual teaching plan or the syllabus for your subject and list the
knowledge, skills and values that learners should have after completing this topic
 They include: Whole numbers which is calculating using whole numbers, calculating
techniques, multiples and factors and solving problems.
 Integers addition and subtracting with integers and properties of integers
 Common fractions and decimal fractions, counting forward and backwards integers for any
interval
 Knowledge learners must be able to multiplication of whole numbers to at least 12 x 12
 Recognise , order and compare integers and be able to round off f decimal fractions
 Use of knowledge of place value estimates the number of decimal places in result before
performing calculations.
 Mental calculations and ordering , comparing whole numbers, investigate and extend
patterns

4. List the content topics of the subjects in the first and second term.
 Term 1
- Whole numbers
- Integers
- Exponents
- Numeric and geometric patterns
- Functions and relationships
 Term 2
- Algebraic expressions
- Algebraic equations
- Construction of geometric figures
- Geometry of 2D shapes
- Geometry of straight lines

5.1. Do you think the CAPS document can be used to guide teaching?
 Yes, because it gives detailed guidance for teachers on what they should teach and how
to assess on a grade by grade and subject by subject
5.2. How will it help you?
 As a teacher CAPS document can help me to ease the administrative burden and
ensure consistency when am teaching
 It also provides a weekly planner to follow and often provide clear guidance on
assessment requirements, pacing and progressing

6.1.1. Read the important of assessment in the CAPS document and summarised the importance of
assessment?

 It is the continuous planned process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information

in terms of the performance of learners
 Assessment involves four steps gathering, collecting evidences of achievement, evaluating
the evidence, recording the findings and using information to understand learner’s
development to improve the process of learning and teaching.
 The assessment should be informal and informal
 This will assist the learners to be able to achieve the minimum performance level of 40%
that is required in mathematics to pass.

6.1.2. Explain the different between formal and informal assessment?

 Informal assessment is a daily monitoring of learners progress and this is done through
observation discussions and practical demonstrations. This is when you have to stop during the
lesson to observe learners or when discussing with the learners
 Informal assessment is also used to provide feedback to learners and there is no need to
record it.
 Formal assessments is a school based assessment and all formal assessment must be
marked and be formally recorded by the teacher for promotion purposes, and must be
moderated for quality assurance and appropriate standard is maintained.

6.1.3. Describe the assessment requirements for your subject. Used the headings included in the CAPS
document.

 Tests and examinations are individual’s assessment tasks it must be carefully designed to ensure
that learner’s demonstrate their full potential in mathematics content.
 Tests and examination must be marked according to the memorandum; it must be done under
supervision.
 Assignment it can be individualised task and can be a collection of past questions and should focus
on more demanding work and resource material.
 Projects are used to assess a range of skills and competencies, learners in project are able to
demonstrate their understanding of different mathematics concepts and apply them in real life
situations.
 Investigation promotes critical and creative thinking and it can be used to discover rules or
concepts and may involve inductive reasoning or testing patterns and this is assessed using
rubrics.
 It can also be done using diagrams and tables and generalizing and drawing conclusions

6.1.4. What is the understanding of moderation? Consult your subject CAPS document to answer this
question?

 Is to ensure that the assessment tasks are fair, valid and reliable for the learners.
 It should be carried out internally at school and externally at district, provincial and national levels.
 This is to ensure that learners are not disadvantages by the invalid and unreliable assessment
tasks.
 Quality assessment is given and higher but must achievable standards are maintained

that are correct.
