Dear Aunt Judy,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am a teenage girl, and I am having a hard time communicating with my mom. It seems like there’s a huge
generation (25) gap between us and we just can’t seem to understand each other. My mom is always
reminding me about things that I don’t think are important. And I feel that she doesn’t (26) respect / support
my decisions about my appearance and my colorful clothes, which she says look silly. She doesn’t
understand that things are different now from when she was growing up. Fashions are different for clothes,
hairstyles, and music.
I know that she loves me and wants the best for me, but I need to ask her (27) permission for almost anything
I want to do. I’m 16 now, and I should be able to make a lot of my own decisions.
I want us to have a good (28) relationship / connection. I want to be able to talk to her and have her
understand where I’m coming from, but every time I try to explain myself, she just ignores my feelings or
tells me to chill out.

2
Do you have any thoughts you can (29) share with me on how I can deal with my mom? I want us to get back
to the way we were when I was younger.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours,
Alison

Speaker 1:

I tell them again and again that they don’t have permission to go into my bedroom while I’m out. But my
mom still goes in. I found her reading my diary once.

Speaker 2:

Every time I come back from the hairdresser’s, my father goes crazy. But I saw some photos of him when he
was my age, and his hairstyle was really silly!

Speaker 3:

My parents haven’t changed the time I have to get home on the weekend since I was 14. I should be able to
get in at 10.00 or 10.30 now, but it’s still nine o’clock.

Speaker 4:

They never listen to me at all. They just give me orders. They don’t think I have the intelligence to make
good decisions. They don’t treat me like a person who is nearly grown up.

Speaker 5:

They don’t like the colorful stuff I wear. But it’s stylish and the trend at the moment. I like leather jackets
and torn blue jeans!
