Face masks and PPEs have become central to the Covid-19 conversation as the
disease tightens its grip on the world. They are regarded as essential items in hospitals where
the equipment could prove the difference between life and death for doctors, nurses, and
patients.
In early March 2020, the World Health Organization called on industry and
governments to increase the manufacturing of facemasks by 40 %.

https://www.nsmedicaldevices.com/analysis/companies-manufacturing-face-masks/

The increase in the demand of facemasks leads to a rise in price. The quantity being
demanded and supplied should also increase. The price of face masks is predicted to continue
increasing, while the supply may not be sufficient to support the demand.

Quantity
https://econlife.com/2020/02/face-mask-production/

This is one situation where questions such as “Will an increase in production of face
masks contribute to the increase in the number of persons being employed?” or Will an
increase in the demand of face masks lead to an increase in its price?” These questions can
be answered using the concepts of variation.
There are several relationships of quantities that you will encounter in this situation.
You will learn how a change in one quantity could correspond to a predictable change in the
other.

4
Let’s start the module by discovering your background knowledge on variations. These
are practical situations that you encounter in real life.

Example 1: INCOME VS WORK

Skeletal Workforce pertains to a work arrangement where a minimum number of
employees are required to be physically present at the office to render service when full
operation is not possible.

Due to extended Enhanced Community Quarantine, the skeletal workforce was

implemented in different companies and the usual number of working days were shortened.
Unfortunately, the salary of the workers is based on the number of days they come to work.
The income of a worker earning per day varies directly as the number of days he works.
The table below shows the relation between the number of days of work to the income
of the workers.
Income in pesos 400 800 1200 1600
No. of days 1 2 3 4

number of days 1 2 3 4 𝟏
income in pesos
= 400 = 800 = 1200 = 1600 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎

This means that the ratio of any specific pair of corresponding number of days to
income is constant. Ratios of successive pairs of values may be equated to form a proportion.
Thus, two variables in direct variation are sometimes said to be direct proportion or to vary
proportionally.

Example 2: LET’S HELP FRONT LINERS

Despite the hardships and health risks, millions of essential frontline workers continue
to do their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. These hardworking heroes are those picking
up trash, providing life-saving medicine, delivering groceries and packages, preparing foods,
cleaning hospitals, caring for those who are most vulnerable, and keeping us safe often while
earning low wages and few benefits.

5
So, let’s help front liners even in our simple ways. We can share our donations to
provide some of their needs such as face masks and PPEs. The COVID fighters team leads
to donate face masks and PPEs to all employees in Bulacan Medical Center.

Each employee will be given 50 pieces of facemask worth 150 pesos and 2 pieces of
PPEs worth 500 pesos. Therefore, the amount of money donated by the team varies directly
to the number of employees who received the items.
If the number of employees who received the items is plotted on the x axis against the
amount of money donated, the resulting graph is a straight line showing direct variation.
Donation in pesos

Number of employees
If the ratio between two quantities is constant, it means that one quantity varies directly
as the other quantity, or the 2 quantities are in direct variation.

𝑦
In symbols, y = kx or 𝑥 = 𝑘 where k is the constant of variation.

Example 3: PLANTS DISTANCING

During the ECQ period, Hon.Tessie Vistan, mayor of Plaridel, Bulacan, launched her
project “Quaran-tanim sa bahay”. She gave a pack of pechay seeds in every house so that
the Plarideleño can plant in their backyard while at home.

6
Try to analyze the table below.
The table shows the relationship between the number of pechay planted in a row and
the distance of pechay plants in meters. What do you notice?
This shows that as the number of plants increases, there is a decrease in the distance
between them. So, take note, if one of the variables increases, while the other one decreases,
then it is an inverse variation.
No. of plants in a row 6 9 12 15 18
Distance in meter 1 1 1 1 1
2 3 4 5 6

How does the graph of an inverse variation look like?

15
No. of plants in a row

12

1 1 1 1
5 4 3 2
Distance in meter
The graph is neither a straight line nor a parabola, but a half of a two-part curve known
as the hyperbola.
Whenever the product of corresponding values of two quantities is a constant,
then one quantity varies inversely as the other.
𝑘 1
In symbols, xy = k; y =𝑥 or y = k (𝑥 )
This means that y is inversely proportional to x, or x is inversely proportional to y.

Example 4: BUILD A BRIDGE

The San Juanico Bridge connecting the provinces of Samar and Leyte is one of the
monumental projects under Former President Ferdinand Marcos’ administration. It is known
to be the longest bridge in the Philippines.

Source: www.dutchpickle.com

7
In August 1969, the San Juanico Bridge construction began and was completed in
December 1972. The length of time of construction depends on the number of workers who
build the bridge. The number of years required to build the bridge varies inversely to the
number of workers. As the number of workers increases, the number of years required to build
would decreases.
Since one variable increase as the other variable decreases, then it shows an inverse
variation.

The first four examples involved only two quantities. What if the situation requires the use
of more than two quantities?

Another type of variation is joint variation. Joint Variation is a relationship between

three variables, where one variable varies directly as the product of two or more variables.

Examples:
a. The relationship between distance, rate, and time in motion problems is a good
example of joint variation. Suppose the rate is 60 miles per hour and the time is 2
hours, the distance is 120miles. Similarly, if the rate is 70 miles an hour and the time
is 3 hours, the distance is 210 miles.
b. The area (A) of a triangle varies jointly as its base (b) and its height (h). Since the area
1 1
of a triangle is expressed as A= bh, then the constant of variation is .
2 2
c. The figure below shows a rectangular solid with a fixed volume. Express its width (w)
as a joint variation in terms of its length (l) and height (h).

In other words, the longer the length l or the height h, the narrower is the width w.

Combined variation is another type of relationship among variables. This is the kind of
variation that involves both the direct and inverse variations.

Examples:
1. The height (h) of a right circular acetate refill for face shield varies directly as the volume
(V) and inversely as the square of the length of the radius (r) of the circular base.
𝑘𝑉
If k is the constant of variation, then ℎ = 𝑟2
2. The speed (s) of a moving object varies directly as the distance traveled (d) and varies
inversely as the time taken (t).
𝑘𝑑
If k is the constant of variation, then 𝑠 = 𝑡 .

In other words, the longer the distance or the shorter the time, the faster is the speed.

8
SUMMARY:
The following diagrams show the different types of variation: Direct Variation, Inverse
Variation, Joint Variation, and Combined Variation. (Note: In each case, k represents the
constant of variation.)

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 1B: HEROES

Our modern-day heroes no longer wear capes but rather they

wear lab suits and personal protective equipment (PPE).They
are our front liners who choose to work and serve the Filipinos
people despite the danger of the pandemic. Their deep love
for our country can be seen through their job.
This activity contains different statements about their work as
a way of paying tribute for their hard work. Your task is to
translate the following statements into mathematical
equations using k as the constant of variation.

1. The number of patients p seen by a doctor in a day is inversely proportional to time t

he/she spends with each patient.
2. The number of modules m distributed by your teacher varies directly to the number of
students s in your section.
3. The number of hours n a nurse work in a day varies directly to the number of patients
p he/she encountered.
4. The time t spent by a delivery man to deliver the orders varies inversely as his speed
s in driving.
5. The number of COVID 19 patients p varies directly to the rate r that the virus spread.

INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT 1: Constant and Graph!

Determine if the tables below represent a direct or an inverse variation. If they do,
write direct or inverse on the blanks provided. Then, identify the constant of variation on the
second column and describe its graph on the third column.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 2: COULOMB’S LAW

According to the Coulomb’s Law, the electrical force between two charged objects is directly
proportional to the product of the quantity of charge on the objects and inversely proportional
to the square of the separation distance between the two objects. In equation form, Coulomb’s
Law is stated as
𝑘 ⋅ 𝑄1 ⋅ 𝑄2
𝐹=
𝑑2

where 𝑘 = proportionality constant or Coulomb’s Law constant

𝑄1 = quantity of charge on object 1 (in Coulombs)
𝑄2 = quantity of charge on object 2 (in Coulombs)
𝑑 = distance of separation between the two objects (in meters)
https://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/estatics/Lesson-3/Coulomb-s-Law

By using Coulomb’s Law, make your own statement based on the given situation below
showing combined variation.

1. After the dog rolled around on his bed for a while, the electrons in his hair were
transferred to the bed. All the dog’s hair strands have positive charges and since like
charges repel, each strand of hair moves away from other strands creating the look of
static electricity as illustrated below.

2. The electrical resistance of a wire to its length and its diameter.

3. The force of attraction of a body to its mass and its distance.

INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT 2: Phases of Covid19

According to George Colony, the Corona Virus Pandemic has four phases. Phase one:
Infection, Phase two: Social Distancing, Phase three: Management, and Phase four:
Eradication.
Read the phrases below and determine whether each expresses a direct, inverse, joint,
or combined variation. Write INFECTION if it is a direct variation, SOCIAL DISTANCING if it
is an inverse variation, MANAGEMENT if it is a joint variation, and ERADICATION if it is a
combined variation. Write your answer on the blank before each number.

_____________10. The amount of water to the space that water did not occupy in a container

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 3: Filipino Culture.

This is the most common terminology that describes how Filipinos welcome foreigners or
tourists who visit the country. This trait of the Filipinos towards their visitors is undeniably
exceptional. Whenever a visitor stays in a Filipino home, there will be a feast or a grand celebration
as it is somehow a tradition for us to prepare bountiful Filipino cuisine for guests to have a taste of
our culture through food.
