BackBox is an automation platform used to automate backups, perform

restores, and execute tasks across the network. Features include password
changes, consistent device upgrades, proactive device condition checks, alerts,
and notifications.

BackBox ISO installation is supported on common virtualization products such as

VMware, Hyper-V, and Xenserver. It can also be installed on a bare metal server.

To successfully install the BackBox platform, you will need to:

1. Download the ISO image. (Installation of BackBox OS will take less than 20 minutes)
2. Review the Virtual Machine Specifications and Port Requirements
3. Create a new Virtual Machine (VM)
4. Install the BackBox platform
5. Run the First Time Wizard
6. Verify the installation
7. Add a Device and Run a Backup

Section 1 | DOWNLOAD THE ISO IMAGE

Download the base ISO using the following link:

1 https://updates.backbox.com/latest-release-iso

2 Upload the ISO file to the VM’s repository.

Section 2 | REVIEW THE VIRTUAL MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS

AND PORT REQUIREMENTS
The BackBox ISO must be installed on a hypervisor and requires a minimum of
4 CPU cores, 8GB of RAM, and 80GB of disk space which is intended for small/medium
environments. For additional disk sizing recommendations, click here -
BackBox Server Sizing Recommendations.

Note: 2TB is the max disk size recognized by the ISO during installation. There is no limit to
the number of disks that can be added once installation is complete.

Access and Port Requirements:

• To manage the BackBox server, HTTPS and SSH are required from the Client IP to the
BackBox Server IP.
• To allow proper operations of BackBox to the devices, please allow access from
BackBox Server IP to the Devices that it’s going to backup.
• The most common ports you need to open are:
SSH (TCP 22)
Telnet (TCP 23)
HTTP (TCP 80)
HTTPS (TCP 443)
• Note: Some devices might require communication back to the BackBox Server using
FTP (TCP 20,21) and TFTP (TCP/UDP 69).
• Credential Information – BackBox in most cases will require a privileged user to

Section 3 | CREATE A NEW VIRTUAL MACHINE

1 Create / Register your BackBox VM.

2 Select a name and OS.

3 Enter the name for your BackBox virtual machine.

4 Choose “Linux”.

5 Choose “CentOS 7 (64 bit)” if available, otherwise “RedHat (64bit)”.

Fill in the CPU, RAM, Disk, and network driver fields for your virtualization platform.
6 Note: For network drivers on XenServer, ESXi, and Hyper-V, choose E1000 legacy
network driver for maximum compatibility.
7 Select the BackBox ISO File.

8 Click Finish and turn on the Virtual Machine.

Section 4 | INSTALL THE BACKBOX PLATFORM

BackBox Installation Process:

The Installation screen appears.

1 You can either wait for the timer to count down or hit Enter on your keyboard.

The BackBox CentOS 7 installation will display on the screen.

2 This may take up to 10 minutes.

For manual network configuration enter lower case ‘y’, or if you want to set up the
3 network using auto DHCP, enter lower case ‘n’
a. Enter the network device number from the shown list
b. Enter the IPV4 Address
c. Enter the Gateway
d. Enter the Netmask
e. Enter the DNS
If everything is correct enter lower case ‘y’, if not, enter lower case ‘n’ and fill in the
details again.

You will then see the CentOS 7 installation screen appear.

4 This may take up to 10 minutes.
Once the CentOS Linx7 installation completes the installation of BackBox you will
5 see the screen below asking you to browse to the IP of the VM you just created to
complete the First Time Wizard.

Section 5 | RUN THE FIRST TIME WIZARD

In your web browser, enter the IP address or host name assigned to the BackBox
1 Server: Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.> The Login screen is displayed:

Enter the default BackBox Username and Password.

a. Username: admin
b. Password: password
Note: You will have the opportunity to change this password in the first-time wizard.

Once you log in you will see the End User License Agreement.

a. You can choose to enable telemetry or check the box to opt out.
b. Please Read and then click on Agree and Continue.

You will need to select the Installation Type. This is where you choose between
Management (main unit) or Agent (dependent unit). Agent units are only able
4 to accept commands from a Management unit, so be sure you already have a
Management unit before choosing Agent.

5 Click Next.

It is best practice to change the default passwords to comply with your internal
6 password requirements. The default credentials are listed below.
a. Default BackBox Web GUI Access:
• User: admin
• Password: password
b. Default Backbox CLI Access:
• User: root
• Password: HayaldaB@gan7

7 Verify the BackBox IP matches the IP address you will use for configuring the license.

8 Select the Create Demo License. This will create a 14-day Evaluation license.

Configuring an NTP server is best practice, but you could opt for manual settings if
9 you do not have NTP.

Enter your SMTP information using an identifying email address.

10 (e.g., backbox@<companydomain.com>) Note this is optional and can be configured
later as needed.

Configure your global retention or choose a retention policy. The default is 30 backups
11 but can be modified to fit the company policy. This can also be changed once the
product is deployed.

12 Click Download to save the BackBox unique encryption key and store it in a safe place.

13 Click the ‘Finish!’ button to apply your updates.

Section 6 | VERIFY THE INSTALLATION

To ensure the installation was successful:

1 Ensure you can login with updated credentials.

21 Add a Device and Run a backup on a device to validate functionality.

Section 7 | ADD A DEVICE AND RUN A BACKUP

How to add a New Device in BackBox and run your first backup:

On the Devices screen, click the Add the device name, the device

Complete the Vendor, Product, Complete the Authentication

3 Version, and Backup Type fields, 4 (Use Custom=profile specific,
and click Next. The third dialog box Username, Password, (Enable

device) and Port fields and click
Next. The fourth dialog box
appears:

Optionally, check Enable IntelliChecks and/or Enable Access to turn on that

5 functionality for the device.

If you want to create local retention settings for the device, click the Backup
6 Retention field.
Note: Leave unchecked to apply Global retention settings. If you turn on Backup
Retention, two additional fields are displayed: one for the number of days those
backups are retained, and one for choosing backups or setting retention policy.
Indicate the number of backups to be retained or select Retention Policy and click the
Edit button to set a new retention policy. Size deviation – override global settings for
size deviation verification.

Click Add Device, or optionally Save & Run Device, if you want to save the Device
7 Configuration and run a Backup right away.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have your first device connected to BackBox!
