ASSIGNMENT 1

Solve the following questions.

1. A single stage impulse generator with DC charging voltage of 120𝑘𝑉, has a discharge
capacitor of 0.02 𝜇𝐹. The wave front and the wave tail resistances connected are 800 Ω and
5000 Ω respectively. If the load capacitor is 1000 𝑝𝐹, calculate the following:
 Energy of the impulse generator circuit;
 Front and tail times of the impulse wave produced.

2. A single stage impulse generator has the discharge capacitor of 0.02 𝜇𝐹, the load capacitor
available is 1000 𝑝𝐹. Calculate the efficiency of the impulse generator circuit. Find the
wavefront resistor and wavetail resistor needed to produce 1.2/50 𝜇𝑠 impulse wave.

3. A multistage Cockcroft-Walton type voltage multiplier has equal capacitance 0.1 𝜇𝐹 in all
stages. The supply transformer secondary voltage is 225 𝑘𝑉(peak) at a frequency of 50 𝐻𝑧.
If the load current to be supplied is 5 𝑚𝐴, find the optimum number of stages for minimum
voltage drop.

4. A Schering bridge was used to determine the dielectric contant and loss factor of a 1mm
thick Bakelite sheet at 50 𝐻𝑧 using a parallel-plate electrode configuration. The electrode
effective area is 100 𝑐𝑚2.

At balance, the bridge arms are-

Determine the following:
 𝐶𝑥
 𝑅𝑥
 dielectric constant 𝜀𝑟

5. A 20 kV, 50 Hz Schering bridge has a standard capacitance of 106 𝜇𝐹. In a test on a bakelite
sheet balance was obtained with a capacitance of 0.35 𝜇𝐹 in parallel with a non-inductive
resistance of 318 Ω, the non-inductive resistance in the remaining arm of the bridge being
130 Ω. Determine the
 Equivalent series resistance and capacitance
 Power factor of the specimen
