ABSTRACT

Earthquake Engineering is a branch of civil engineering

that focuses on the analysis, design, and construction of
structures that can resist the forces generated by earthquakes.
The primary objective is to ensure the safety of buildings,
infrastructure, and human lives by minimizing damage and
reducing the risk of collapse during seismic events. This output
aims to make students learn on how to make a hazard
assessment about a plan using NSCP 2015 standards, to solve
for the forces acting on the frames using portal method, and
making shear and moment diagram in each girder. The portal
method is used to analyzing building frames subjected to lateral
loads like seismic forces. Shear and moment diagrams shows
where the maximum loads occur for optimizing design to
prevent failure in the building. The results of this analysis show
the importance of hazard assessment to improve building
resilience.
HAZARD ASSESSMENT RESULTS

Occupancy Category: Type IV

Seismic Importance Factor

The Proposed Three Storey Multi-Purpose

Building will fall under occupancy category IV
(Standard Occupancy Structures) since its functions are
not listed in category I,II,III, and V.
SOIL PROFILE TYPE

The Proposed Three Storey Multi-Purpose

Building will fall under SOIL PROFILE TYPE S which has
D

Stiff Soil Profile since the liquefaction in the site area is

said to be SAFE. Liquefaction is a phenomenon where
saturated, loosely packed soil temporarily loses its
strength and behaves like a liquid due to stress, often
caused by earthquakes or other sudden forces.

SEISMIC ZONE FACTOR (Z)

The pre-developed THREE STOREY MULTI-PURPOSE

COMMERCIAL BUILDING will fall under the ZONE 4 and will
have a seismic zone factor Z or 0.40. The location of the site
area is in PARK. NARRA, BRGY. SINAWILAN, DIGOS CITY which is
in the Region Xl – DAVAO DEL SUR

NEAR SOURCE FACTOR

Using the HazardHunterPH provided by PHIVOLCS, the

nearest active fault found within the site area is the
CENTRAL DIGOS FAULT with a distance of 1.9 km from
the structure
NEAR SOURCE FACTOR

Based on the data given by HazardHunterPH, the pre-

developed THREE STOREY MULTI-PURPOSE
COMMERCIAL BUILDING will fall under SEISMIC
SOURCE TYPE “C” with the near source factor Na is
equal to 1.00 under less than or equal 2 km
classification
SEISMIC SOURCE TYPE

The pre-developed THREE STOREY MULTI-PURPOSE

COMMERCIAL BUILDING will fall under the SEISMIC SOURCE
TYPE “C” because the CENTRAL DIGOS FAULT found nearest the
site area is an active fault that are capable of producing large
magnitude events and that have a high rate of seismic activity.
Thus, the maximum magnitude M is less than 6.5.
SEISMIC COEFFICIENTS

Since the soil profile type of the pre-developed THREE

STOREY MULTI-PURPOSE COMMERCIAL BUILDING is
SD, the seismic coefficient CA to be used is 0.44Na and
seismic coefficient Cv to be used is 0.64NV.
VALUE OF R AND Ω 0

The pre-developed THREE STOREY MULTI-PURPOSE

COMMERCIAL BUILDING will be made by Moment-
Resisting Frame Systems classified as Special
reinforced concrete moment frames members as it will
fall in the Moment-Resisting Frame systems classified
as Special Moment-Resisting Frans (SMRF). The value
of R to be used is 8.5 and the ΩO is 2.8.

The pre-developed 10-STOREY RESIDENTIAL

APARTMENT BUILDING will be used for this report
utilizing all the specifications and data found in the
2015 NSCP Section 208 as the basis for the design of
earthquake loads. Upon analyzing and applying all the
information involved in the code, the 10-STOREY
RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT BUILDING falls upon the
following:
INTRODUCTION OF NSCP 2015

A structural design code that serves as a reference for

structural and civil engineers in the design and evaluation of
buildings and other structures is the National Structural Code of
the Philippines (NSCP) 2015. The NSCP offers a uniform set of
standards for the planning, building, and maintenance of
buildings.

INTRODUCTION OF NSCP 2015 SECTION 208

Important rules and specifications for the design and

construction of structures are provided by the National
Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2015 in order to
guarantee safety and resilience against a range of loading
circumstances, including seismic pressures. Because the
Philippines is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire,
earthquakes are a common natural hazard. Section 208 in
particular covers seismic design rules, which are essential for
reducing the hazards connected with earthquakes.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Earthquake engineering plays an important role in
constructing buildings and its safety against seismic forces.
Using portal method for the lateral loads, and constructing
axial, shear and moment diagram for beams/girders and
columns to identify maximum loads to prevent building failure.
NSCP 2015 is used for hazard assessment in identifying,
occupancy category, seismic importance factor, soil profile
type, seismic zone factor, near source factor, seismic source
type, seismic coefficients, and value of R and Ω. In order to
ensure the integrity, and stability of the buildings civil engineers
should always use earthquake engineering analysis.
