Assignment 1
Title: Identification and Specification of Desktop/Laptop/Server Type.
Aim:
To identify the type of desktop, laptop, or server and document the specifications of a given
computer system, including hardware and software details.
Equipment/Software Required:
● Computer system (desktop, laptop, or server)
● Operating system and system information tools (e.g., System Information on
Windows & Linux OS)
● Internet access
Theory:
Understanding the differences between desktops, laptops, and servers is essential in
computing. Desktops are stationary systems designed for personal or office use, laptops are
portable systems with integrated components, and servers are specialized systems designed to
manage network resources and services. Each type has distinct hardware and software
specifications based on its intended use.
Procedure:
1. System Identification:
o Determine whether the system is a desktop, laptop, or server based on physical
characteristics and usage context.
2. Access System Information:
o For Windows: Use System Information (type msinfo32 in the Run dialog).
o For Linux: Use the lshw command in the terminal.
3. Document Hardware Specifications:
o Processor (CPU): Note the model, speed, and number of cores.
o Memory (RAM): Note the total capacity and type.
o Storage: Note the type (HDD/SSD), capacity, and number of drives.
o Graphics: Note the type (integrated/discrete), model, and memozry.
o Network: Note the type of network adapters (Ethernet/Wi-Fi) and their
specifications.
4. Document Software Specifications:
o Operating System: Note the name, version, and architecture (32-bit/64-bit).
o Installed Software: List major software applications relevant to the system's
use.
5. Optional - External Research:
o If necessary, use online resources to fill in any missing specifications or to
understand unfamiliar components.
Observations:
● Type of System: (e.g., Desktop, Laptop, Server)
● Model and Manufacturer: (e.g., Dell Inspiron, HP ProBook, Dell PowerEdge)
● Detailed Specifications:
o Processor: (e.g., Intel Core i3- 3.40 GHz)
o Memory: (e.g., 4 GB DDR3)
o Storage: (e.g., 500 GB HDD)
o Network: (e.g., Intel Wi-Fi 6, Realtek Ethernet)
o Operating System: (e.g., Windows 10 Pro & Ubuntu 20.04)
o Installed Software: (e.g VLC, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Apache
Server, Google Chrome etc.)
Conclusion:
In this experiment, the identified system type was a (desktop/laptop/server). The detailed
specifications were documented, including the hardware components and software
environment. This information is crucial for understanding the capabilities and limitations of
the system. By knowing the specifications, users can make informed decisions about
upgrades, maintenance, and software compatibility. Understanding the differences between
desktops, laptops, and servers helps in selecting the right system for specific tasks and
requirements.
